By Sarah Morland(Reuters) - The head of the United Nation's drugs and crime office on Thursday warned of a "vicious cycle" of arms trafficking to increasingly powerful Haitian gangs, fueling an internal conflict and worsening violence across the Caribbean. "It's more important than ever to take every measure possible to prevent illicit flows," the UNODC's executive director, Ghada Waly, told a U.N. Security Council meeting, saying arms trafficking and gang activity were feeding off each other. A recent UNODC report found that most illegal firearms seized in Haiti came from the United States, notably Florida, Arizona, Georgia, Texas and California. After the Dominican Republic shut its border with Haiti, smugglers were turning to more remote routes including clandestine airstrips, the report said. No date has been set for deployment, which Haiti requested in October 2022.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is trying to enlist school leaders to help spread the word about the importance of safely storing firearms to protect children. Also participating will be Stefanie Feldman, who runs the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention. "We know safe storage of firearms can save lives, especially by reducing suicide by firearms and school shootings," Feldman told reporters. Guns are the leading cause of death for American children, and most guns used in school shootings are taken from the shooter’s home. There's no federal law requiring gun owners to lock up their firearms, although the White House has encouraged such rules to be implemented at the state level.

(AP) — A Montana felon previously convicted of killing eagles to sell their parts on the black market was sentenced to three years in federal prison on Wednesday for related gun violations. U.S. District Judge Susan Watters in Billings sentenced Harvey Hugs, 60, after he pleaded guilty in September to being a felon in possession of firearms. James Sawyer, the police chief and only officer in Ray, N.D., spent his days waiting to catch the occasional driver going over the 25 mph speed limit where the highway hits this farm town of 700 residents. Outside of helping nearby deputies with a rare car chase or the sporadic break-in, there was little for him to do, town officials recall. Until one day several years ago, when Sawyer got a strange request, according to court documents. A man named Larry Vickers, who held popular firearms-tactics training sessions for law enforcement, needed a favor: Could Sawyer help him import a machine gun into the country? All he had to do was write a letter that would be submitted to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives saying his one-man department was interested in buying the highly restricted weapon.

But a bipartisan coalition of gun-safety advocates, some of them people who a year ago could not have imagined spending their days at the Capitol, were doing far more than paying attention. Here in Tennessee, firearms are the leading cause of death in children, and these voters are determined to do something about that. Poll after poll and referendum after referendum make it clear that Republican legislators are out of step with their own voters on a host of topics. They want to limit who can speak and for how long on the House floor. They want to control which Tennesseans can sit in the House gallery to monitor — and possibly protest — legislative proceedings.
