ESPN returning Emmys submitted under fake names

New York CNN —ESPN returned dozens of Emmy statues and “disciplined” employees after an investigation disclosed Thursday found that the sports network had submitted fake names to the awards organization in a bid to secure trophies for on-air personalities who had been ineligible to receive them. The apparent fraud stretched back to 1997, ESPN said in a statement, acknowledging that members of its team “were clearly wrong” for concocting the scheme. “Some members of our team were clearly wrong in submitting certain names that may go back to 1997 in Emmy categories where they were not eligible for recognition or statuettes,” an ESPN spokesperson said in a statement. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which administers the Emmys, said it discovered the fraud, prompting an investigation. NATAS said in a statement to CNN that it had identified several “fictitious credits” submitted by ESPN to multiple sports Emmys categories.

Cher has sold over 100 million records and won a trove of awards, including a Grammy, an Emmy and an Oscar, across her six-decade career. But there's one mistake the 77-year-old singer made earlier in her career that still haunts her — and cost her "a lot of money," she shared in a new interview. While that line made it to the final recorded version of "Believe," Cher's name doesn't appear in the songwriting credits. "Believe," which was released in 1998, is one of Cher's best-selling records to date. Warner Records, the label that released "Believe," did not immediately respond to CNBC Make It's request for comment.

Minnesota Nice: The History of ‘Fargo’

The Emmy-winning FX limited series “Fargo” returns Tuesday with a new season, its fifth, that stars Juno Temple and Jon Hamm and goes back to the basics: Minnesota cops, North Dakota bad guys and plenty of snow-covered landscapes. Created by Noah Hawley in 2014, “Fargo” is named after the Oscar-winning ’90s film by Joel and Ethan Coen and often repeats that film’s character archetypes: kind but determined police officers that echo Frances McDormand’s Marge Gunderson; greedy, conniving husbands like William H. Macy’s Jerry Lundegaard; and bumbling bad guys à la those played in the original film by Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare. But the series takes as its inspiration the whole of the Coenverse, referencing and remixing characters, themes and aesthetics from films like “Raising Arizona,” “Miller’s Crossing” and “No Country for Old Men” — as well as “Fargo,” of course — in original stories the tend to center on the evil deeds of stupid men. It has been three years since the last season of “Fargo.” With the new one about to premiere and the other four available on Hulu, here is a look at the who, what, where and you betcha of “Fargo,” season by season.
