The new indictment against Donald Trump refers to six unindicted co-conspirators. The last time a prosecutor tried flipping people close to Trump, it didn't go too well. According to the new federal indictment against him, brought by Justice Department Special Counsel Jack Smith, Trump had six criminal co-conspirators. Smith is also overseeing a separate prosecution against Trump and two alleged co-conspirators related to the ex-president's hoarding of government documents. The Manhattan district attorney's office charged Weisselberg and the Trump Organization with a litany of white collar crimes in 2021.

The indictment of Trump on four new federal criminal charges, all related to the former president’s effort to overturn his defeat in the 2020 election, lays out some of those lies one by one. Even in listing 21 lies, the 45-page indictment does not come close to capturing the entirety of Trump’s massive catalogue of false claims about the election. The lie that the Justice Department had identified significant concerns that may have affected the outcome of the election. (Page 16)The indictment notes that Trump made this claim on his infamous January 2, 2021 call with Raffensperger, whose staff responded that the claim was inaccurate. The lie that Pennsylvania “want[s] to recertify.” (Page 38) Trump made this false claim in his January 6 speech.

The defense attorney, John Lauro, pointed to the conservative lawyer John Eastman, who played a central role in the push to get then-Vice President Mike Pence to falsely declare Trump the winner of the election. Eastman is one of six people described as Trump's co-conspirators in the indictment filed Tuesday in Washington, D.C., federal court. "You're entitled to believe and trust advice of counsel," Lauro said. "You had one of the leading constitutional scholars in the U.S., John Eastman, say to President Trump, 'This is a protocol that you can follow, it's legal.'" "The Eastman legal team is confident of its legal position in this matter."

"The previous month, the Deputy White House Counsel had informed [Trump] that 'there is no world, there is no option in which you do not leave the White House [o]n January 20th,'" the indictment notes. On Jan. 3, 2021, the counsel tried to dissuade Clark from taking the job as acting AG, the indictment says. The indictment of former President Donald J. Trump in connection with his efforts to retain power after his 2020 election loss left a number of unanswered questions, among them: Who is Co-conspirator 6? The indictment asserted that six people aided Mr. Trump’s schemes to remain in office. Identified by the indictment as “a political consultant who helped implement a plan to submit fraudulent slates of presidential electors to obstruct the certification proceeding,” the person could have been a number of figures in Mr. Trump’s orbit. But a close look at the indictment and a review of messages among people working with Mr. Trump’s team provides a strong clue. An email from December 2020 from Boris Epshteyn, a strategic adviser to the Trump campaign in 2020, to Mr. Giuliani matches a description in the indictment of an interaction between Co-conspirator 6 and Mr. Giuliani, whose lawyer has confirmed that he is Co-conspirator 1.

He also played a prominent public role in pushing theories of widespread fraud in the 2020 election. He believed there was proof of election fraud, and I have seen the affidavits that back that up." Powell has since been sued for defamation by the voting companies Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic over false claims she made about them rigging the 2020 election against Trump. 4: JEFFREY BOSSERT CLARKJeffrey Clark is a former high-ranking Justice Department official who has been under investigation by federal prosecutors for his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Donald Trump has now been indicted three times, accused of crimes occurring before, during and after his presidency. But the indictment does more: It skillfully avoids breathing air into a Trump claim of selective prosecution. To not have brought this case against Mr. Trump would have been an act of selective nonprosecution. Mr. Smith has now said he can prove the same conduct beyond a reasonable doubt. Although the Jan. 6 select committee referred Mr. Trump for investigation for inciting an insurrection, Mr. Smith wisely demurred.

This time, it's over his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. Read a copy of the indictment document below:Get the inside scoop on today’s biggest stories in business, from Wall Street to Silicon Valley — delivered daily. Trump has denied the reality that he lost the 2020 election. Trump separately pleaded not guilty to a 34-count indictment brought earlier this year from the Manhattan district attorney's office related to his hush-money payments to Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election. Trump is the first former president in US history to be charged with any crime, much less crimes three different indictments.

The indictment of former President Donald J. Trump mentions — but does not identify by name — six co-conspirators who prosecutors say worked with him in seeking to overturn the 2020 election. It is not clear why the office of the special counsel, Jack Smith, decided to seek only Mr. Trump’s indictment for now, though it is possible that some of the co-conspirators could still face charges in the weeks ahead. Here is how the indictment describes those conspirators. The identities of the co-conspirators could not immediately be determined, but the descriptions of them appear to match up with a number of people who were central to the investigation into election tampering conducted by prosecutors working for Mr. Smith. Among those people central to the inquiry were Rudolph W. Giuliani, a lawyer who oversaw Mr. Trump’s attempts to claim the election was marred by widespread fraud; John Eastman, a law professor who provided the legal basis to overturn the election by manipulating the count of electors to the Electoral College; Sidney Powell, a lawyer who pushed Mr. Trump to use the military to seize voting machines and rerun the election; Jeffrey Clark, a Justice Department official at the time; and Kenneth Chesebro and James Troupis, lawyers who helped flesh out the plan to use fake electors pledged to Mr. Trump in states that were won by President Biden.

Trump has rejected any suggestion he was in the wrong after the 2020 election. Among the six are four unnamed attorneys who allegedly aided Trump in his effort to subvert the 2020 election. Fake electors plot was an unprecedented attempt to subvert Electoral CollegeThe so-called fake electors plot was an unprecedented attempt to subvert the Electoral College process by replacing electors that Biden had rightfully won with illegitimate GOP electors. Federal investigators have subpoenaed the fake electors across the country, sent FBI agents to interview witnesses about their conduct, and recently granted immunity to two fake electors from Nevada to secure their grand jury testimony. In Michigan, the state’s attorney general charged the 16 fake electors who signed certificates falsely claiming Trump won Michigan in the 2020 election with multiple felonies.

CNN, however, can identify five of the six co-conspirators based on quotes in the indictment and other context. They include:Co-Conspirator 1 is former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani. Among other things, the indictment quotes from a voicemail that Co-Conspirator 1 left “for a United States Senator” on January 6, 2021. The quotes in the indictment match quotes from Giuliani’s call intended for GOP Sen. Tommy Tuberville, as reported by CNN and other outlets. REUTERS/Lindsay DeDarioAug 2 (Reuters) - A law enacted in the aftermath of the U.S. Civil War to protect the rights of Black people factors into the charges brought against former President Donald Trump on Tuesday in a federal election interference case. The scheme explicitly targeted Black voters. To prevail against Trump, prosecutors must prove he conspired with at least one other person to deprive voters of their right to a fair election, regardless of whether he was successful. Trump could argue that he is innocent because he did not intend to break the law. But even if prosecutors have a strong legal case, Trump would need just one holdout juror to trigger a mistrial.

Trump was indicted for a third time on Tuesday, this time for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election. The indictment refers to six unnamed co-conspirators in the wide-ranging plot. The 45-page indictment claims that six of Trump's associates were co-conspirators in the plot, but doesn't name any of them. Donald Trump has been indicted as part of the Department of Justice's investigation into the events leading up to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. The riot was the culmination of efforts by Trump's supporters to block the certification of Biden's election. The Justice Department, in a team led by Special Counsel Jack Smith, brought the charges. Trump announced last month that Smith's team had served him a target letter indicating he may be indicted in the investigation. Trump and six co-conspirators also attempted to rope then-Vice President Mike Pence in their scheme and use the Justice Department to keep Trump in power, the indictment alleges.

The four-count, 45-page indictment charges Republican Trump with conspiring to defraud the U.S. by preventing Congress from certifying Democrat Joe Biden's victory and to deprive voters of their right to a fair election. The charges stem from Special Counsel Jack Smith's sprawling investigation into allegations Trump sought to reverse his loss to Biden. The indictment lays out numerous examples of Trump's election falsehoods and notes that close advisers, including senior intelligence officials, told him repeatedly that the election results were legitimate. "President Trump will not be deterred by disgraceful and unprecedented political targeting!" CNN —Special counsel Jack Smith unveiled his case alleging that former President Donald Trump broke several laws in his attempts to overturn the 2020 election, with a grand jury indictment returned Tuesday that illustrated the depth and breadth of the federal criminal investigation. Trump, who has derided Smith’s case as a politically motivated “fake indictment,” has been summoned to appear before a magistrate judge on Thursday. Prosecutors put forward several examples of Trump being told by his aides that fraud claims he was promoting were false. The new indictment recounts a conversation between Trump and Meadows, during which Meadows allegedly told Trump that he had observed Georgia election officials were “conducting themselves in an exemplary fashion,” while assuring Trump they would find fraud if it existed. Hours later, Trump tweeted that the election officials were “terrible people” who were trying to cover-up evidence of fraud.

July 31 (Reuters) - The judge presiding over a Georgia grand jury investigation into Donald Trump on Monday rejected the former U.S. president's bid to disqualify the lead prosecutor and block any indictments stemming from the probe, which is expected to yield charges in the coming weeks. CNN —A judge in Fulton County, Georgia, on Monday rejected efforts by Donald Trump’s legal team to toss evidence in the criminal investigation into the former president’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia and to disqualify the district attorney investigating him. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney also rejected efforts by Cathy Latham, who served as one of the GOP fake electors in Georgia, to join Trump’s push. CNN previously reported that Willis is considering bringing racketeering and conspiracy charges in connection with Trump and his allies’ efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia. Trump’s team already raised their arguments before the Georgia Supreme Court, which dismissed Trump’s attempt to shut down the investigation. A hearing on that matter is currently scheduled before another judge on August 10.

July 28 (Reuters) - Here is a list of legal troubles facing former U.S. President Donald Trump, the front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. Trump said his attorneys met on Thursday with U.S. Justice Department officials, in a sign charges could come soon. Trump said on his Truth Social platform that the Department of Justice had not told his attorneys when action was likely. Officials have testified that during his final months in office, Trump pressured them with false voter fraud claims. Legal experts said Trump may have violated at least three Georgia criminal laws: conspiracy to commit election fraud, criminal solicitation to commit election fraud and intentional interference with performance of election duties.

CNN —Donald Trump’s legal troubles deepened earlier this week when he was informed by special counsel Jack Smith that he’s the target of the criminal investigation into the aftermath of the 2020 election – the clearest sign yet that the former president could soon face more criminal charges. But without more detail, it’s hard to know exactly what shape the charges will take or what Trump 2020 election-related conduct they are aimed at. Among the potential charges Trump has been warned about is one pertaining to witness tampering, according to the Wall Street Journal and other outlets. Trump’s alleged involvement in a criminal conspiracy has been invoked in the litigation around the House select committee that investigated January 6’s pursuit of Trump lawyer John Eastman’s emails. That ruling pointed both to the obstruction of an official proceeding statute and the general conspiracy statute.

The American legal system is on the cusp of a remarkable historical achievement. The target letter signals that the grand jury investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol is likely to indict Trump, perhaps any day now. Willis can continue her work, and she’s expected to begin issuing indictments — including potentially her own Trump indictment — in August, if not sooner. Presuming another Trump indictment (or more than one) is imminent — or even if it is not — the legal response to Jan. 6 will continue. If you rewind the clock to the late evening of Jan. 6, 2021, America’s long history of a peaceful transfer of power was over, broken by a demagogue and his mob.
