Luhrmann echoed similar sentiments, saying, “I think the Golden Globes has really walked the walk, not just talked the talk.

More New Year’s Resolutions You Can Actually Keep

Some of us are drawn to ambitious New Year’s resolutions. Pogo stick from Maine to San Diego; finish an 80,000-piece puzzle of chameleons playing poker; unmask a trove of secret government records showing Elvis is alive and running a combination Jet Ski/poke bowl shack in Islamorada. If you read my New Year’s column last year, you know I prefer a modest resolution, with a lower barrier to entry. Here’s a fresh list of humble resolutions for 2023:
‘A Man Called Otto’ Review: Forrest Grump
  + stars: | 2022-12-30 | by ( Kyle Smith | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
This was the year Tom Hanks decided to stretch himself: Lately seen portraying Col. Tom Parker as a Mephistophelean con artist in “Elvis,” he’s back as the world’s grumpiest man in “A Man Called Otto,” which attempts to disguise the famously sunny actor as a walking cloud bank. Set in a condominium development in Pennsylvania in the winter, the remake of 2015’s Swedish film “A Man Called Ove” (which was based on a novel of the same name) casts Mr. Hanks as a lonely and humorless widower who isn’t so much fighting depression as surrendering to it. He’s an inveterate rule-enforcer, whistle-blower and manager-caller who snarls and grumbles at everyone who crosses his path. But given Mr. Hanks’s history of role choices, it seems only a matter of time before Otto’s heart of gold starts to shine through his miserable façade. And without even a warning from the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.

It’s not that theatrical film exhibition was in a particularly good place before the pandemic. Yet the astounding box-office figures of 2022 tell a different story: Movie theaters didn’t become obsolete. It offered up the best of the moviegoing experience: spectacle, plus quality, plus rewatchability. But best of all, the hunger for the overly familiar was not the only story to be told this year. But if the pandemic-era absence of theatrical releases proved one thing, it’s that people love going to the movies, really love it, and not just to see Marvel movies.
Pat Boone Is the Last of the Hollywood Squares

HollywoodIf you’re under 50, you may not recognize the name Pat Boone . Consider this: For most of the latter half of the 20th century, there wasn’t a person in America who didn’t know who Mr. Boone was and what he stood for. He was the All-American; the kid in the white buck shoes; the clean-cut alternative to early rock-’n’-rollers like Elvis Presley , Little Richard and Chuck Berry; the star of a dozen Hollywood movies, none of which contained anything resembling profanity, social subversion or a love scene. Life magazine put Mr. Boone on its cover in February 1959, dubbing him “The Million-Dollar Idol of U.S. Teen-Agers.”
"Top Gun: Maverick," "Avatar: The Way of Water," and more box-office hits are in Oscar contention. Now, with the Oscars fighting for viewership, box-office hits like "Top Gun: Maverick" — this year's biggest movie so far — and "Avatar: The Way of Water" — which is chasing that title — may be in contention for the top prize at the 2023 ceremony. The declining viewership has, in recent years, prompted the organization behind the Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, to try to inject the show with changes. The aforementioned "Top Gun: Maverick" is a formidable player in this year's awards race, as is "Avatar: The Way of Water." The movie, which was made for $25 million, grossed $103 million worldwide, making it indie studio A24's biggest film ever.
"Saturday Night Live's" final show of 2022 doubled as a send-off for Cecily Strong, who exited amid her 11th season and as one of the longest-tenured female cast members. Amid speculation she would depart before the 48th season started in fall, Strong stayed on. Her original characters on the show included Cathy Anne, "Weekend Update" anchor Michael Che's chain-smoking neighbor, which she reprised Saturday in a goodbye sketch. "Actually, I’m a little emo here tonight because truth is I’m here to say goodbye," Cathy Anne said. Cecily Strong as Cathy Anne on "Saturday Night Live."
Puerto Rican singer and musician Lalo Rodríguez, best known for his salsa megahit "Ven devórame otra vez" (Come devour me again) has died. Light and progress Lalo," salsa music icon Willie Colón, who is also credited for helping popularize the genre, lamented in Spanish on Twitter. Salsa music enthusiast Juana Peña described Rodríguez as a "versatile singer, capable of getting into any rhythm and doing it well" in a tweet. Puerto Rican writer Sandra Guzmán mourned the singer's passing with a touching post saying, "A virtuoso goes to music heaven to join Puerto Rican salsa Gods.
CNN —Giving the “National Treasure” movies a young-adult spin, “National Treasure: Edge of History” transforms the franchise into a Disney+ series, one that offers the same playful approach to the past while weighing that down with tiresome relationship issues and a protagonist with her own Scooby gang. The opening episodes have their moments, but it’s less something to treasure than at best mildly enjoy. Nicolas Cage starred in the 2004 movie and its sequel, a sort of discount “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” The baton here passes to Lisette Olivera as Jess, a whip-smart Dreamer whose father, a protector of treasures, disappeared when she was a baby. As the recent “Willow” reminds us, Disney has aggressively mined its movie library for titles that might lend themselves to streaming-series treatment, and “National Treasure,” with its episodic aspect as Jess must locate and crack new clues, perhaps works on that level better than most. “National Treasure: Edge of History” premieres December 14 on Disney+.
