UK minister: 'The world has moved on' from Boris Johnson
  + stars: | 2023-06-11 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, June 11 (Reuters) - The world has moved on from former British prime minister Boris Johnson and the governing Conservative Party and the rest of the country do not miss the drama of his period in office, energy minister Grant Shapps said on Sunday. Asked about criticism from Johnson and his allies that he was forced out, Shapps told Sky News: "The world has moved on. "I really like Boris and I worked very closely with him," Shapps told BBC TV. He also took aim at current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. "I think Boris Johnson feels that there is an opportunity for him now to go off and lick his wounds, but also seize new opportunities."

For decades, his carefully honed media persona – part pseudo-intellectual; part loveable-but-out-of-touch-poshboy – won Johnson fans beyond the traditional Conservative base. Johnson attended a Parliament's Privileges Committee hearing, where he gave evidence on whether he deliberately misled parliament over Partygate. Adrian Dennis/AFP/Getty ImagesThat same day, Johnson’s dwindling influence was further underscored as he led a futile rebellion against Sunak’s new Brexit deal, something Johnson has publicly criticized. Johnson delivered Brexit in 2016, but it was now Prime Minister Rishi Sunak who received praise from US President Joe Biden for fixing the issue Johnson's deal created with Northern Ireland. And living in denial might be the kindest thing that Johnson could possibly have done for himself and his legacy.

It is tempting to view Boris Johnson’s sudden resignation from Britain’s Parliament on Friday evening as merely another twist in a serpentine career, a tactical retreat rather than a political epitaph. After all, the language in his 1,035-word statement was defiant and aggrieved, peppered with reminders of the thumping electoral victory that he had delivered for the Conservative Party less than four years ago and pregnant with the possibility that he could do so again in the future. As he has on so many other occasions, Mr. Johnson seemed to be channeling his political hero, Winston Churchill, Britain’s wartime leader who was swept out of power in 1945 only to return to Downing Street in triumph six years later. Yet this time, political analysts expressed skepticism about a Churchillian restoration for Mr. Johnson. With little support beyond a rump of hard-core Brexiteers in Parliament, and a British public that has grown weary of the Boris soap opera, they said there was almost no plausible path back to power for him.

LONDON, June 9 (Reuters) - Boris Johnson awarded his political aides and allies with some of Britain's highest honours to mark his resignation as prime minister, including some who attended parties in government buildings during COVID-19 lockdowns. Martin Reynolds, a senior civil servant and Johnson's former principal private secretary, was given an Order of the Bath award for public service. Labour Party deputy leader Angela Rayner called Johnson's honours list a "sickening insult". A Conservative member of parliament, who asked not to be named, said the list was "deeply embarrassing" and showed Johnson's lack of remorse. The former prime minister also approved honours for Conservative party politicians who have recently been caught in other scandals.

Boris Johnson Resigns From Parliament
  + stars: | 2023-06-09 | by ( Stephen Castle | Mark Landler | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
Britain’s former prime minister, Boris Johnson, abruptly resigned his parliamentary seat on Friday, another dramatic twist in the career of one of the country’s most flamboyant and divisive politicians. Mr. Johnson has been under investigation from a committee of the House of Commons that was looking into whether he had lied to Parliament over lockdown-breaking parties in Downing Street during the Covid-19 pandemic. On Friday, having received a confidential copy of their findings, he accused the committee of attempting to drive him out, adding: “They have still not produced a shred of evidence that I knowingly or recklessly misled the Commons.”The committee had the power to recommend a sanction that could have led to Mr. Johnson being forced to fight an election to hold his constituency just outside London — a contest he might well have lost.

LONDON, June 9 (Reuters) - Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson quit as a member of British parliament on Friday in a furious protest against lawmakers investigating his conduct, reopening divisions in the ruling Conservative Party ahead of national elections next year. Johnson said he was stepping down because it was "clear" that the committee was "determined to use the proceedings against me to drive me out of parliament". He also chided current Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for his performance in power. Parliament's privileges committee had the power to recommend Johnson be suspended from parliament for more than 10 days if they were to find he did mislead parliament recklessly or deliberately, potentially triggering an election for his seat. It is the second in a day for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak after an ally of Johnson, Nadine Dorries, announced she would step down.

Parliament's privileges committee - the main disciplinary body for lawmakers - had the power to recommend Johnson be suspended from parliament. Johnson hinted that he could return to politics, declaring he was leaving parliament "for now". The investigation is chaired by a senior Labour Party lawmaker, but the majority of lawmakers on the committee are Conservatives. A spokesperson for the committee said Johnson had "impugned the integrity" of parliament with his resignation statement. Johnson used his resignation statement on Friday to deliver an attack on the premiership of Sunak, whom he partly blames for ending his government.

Stability in 10 Downing Street has allowed for better coordination on Ukraine, according to officials, and helped resolve a festering dispute over Northern Ireland trade rules. Ahead of the visit, Sunak cast his economic objectives as directly linked to the security agenda. When Biden met Sunak in San Diego earlier this year, he made reference to the condo the Stanford MBA graduate maintains in California. Yet that meeting was only a brief chat over tea; Biden spent most of his visit to Ireland exploring his ancestral roots. Sunak has been lobbying for the British defense secretary Ben Wallace, but other candidates are also thought to be under consideration.

Late last month a Chinese fighter jet flew in front of a U.S. warplane over the South China Sea, drawing a rebuke from the United States. China regards the United States as an outsider interfering in a region in which it sees itself as a force for peace and stability. The United States says such patrols defend the right of all countries to sail in international waters. Some analysts say Chinese military commanders have been encouraged to act more assertively against foreign military ships and planes. And that's when the United States would eventually take the necessary measures to reduce the risk."

However, Ark Invest's flagship Ark Innovation ETF (ARKK) exited its position in Nvidia entirely in early January —before the chipmaker enjoyed a powerful rally that propelled it to a $1 trillion market capitalization. We saw this potential for deep learning and enjoyed a lot of that ride," said Frank Downing, a research director at Ark Invest. The growth of the industry and the urgent need for powerful AI hardware has led to an increase in the number of companies entering the market. THE HAGUE, June 6 (Reuters) - Ukraine and Russia face off at the top United Nations court on Tuesday over Moscow's alleged backing of pro-Russian separatists blamed for the shooting down of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 in 2014. It will be the first time lawyers for Ukraine and Russia meet at the ICJ, also know as the World Court, since Moscow launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022. Ukraine will first present its case and Russia will then have an opportunity to respond. It also found that Russia had "overall control" over forces in the breakaway Donetsk People's Republic in eastern Ukraine since mid-May 2014. A finding by the World Court that Russia equipped and funded rebels in eastern Ukraine responsible for the MH17 disaster would be a defeat for Moscow, which repeatedly denied sending troops or military equipment to eastern Ukraine in 2014.

The inquiry recently requested that it be given access to the private messages of a number of government officials – including Johnson. That request was made to the Cabinet Office, an important government department that supports the PM and the cabinet in nearly all areas of government. On Friday, Johnson went around the Cabinet Office and published a letter in which he agreed to share his personal WhatsApp messages and handwritten notebooks directly with the inquiry. The release of phone messages could be embarrassing for Rishi Sunak and anyone serving in his government who also served under Boris Johnson. The official Cabinet Office position is that it is questioning whether an inquiry should have the legal authority to make such sweeping demands.

The match was tetchy with referee Anthony Taylor dishing out 14 yellow cards, the most ever in a Europa League game, and playing almost 30 minutes of stoppage time in total. Their run to the final saw them beat PSV Eindhoven, Fenerbahce and Manchester United before downing Juventus in the semis. It was the third consecutive Europa League final that ended in a penalty shootout. Russia's efforts to target Ukraine's air defenses have had "little success," the UK MOD said. Ukraine shot down several Kinzhal missiles this month, which Russia had bragged were unstoppable. In its latest update, the UK MOD described a slew of recent aerial attacks on Ukraine. But the UK MOD described Russia as otherwise focused on reacting to Ukraine's moves rather than being proactive in its war. Both sides are now gearing up for Ukraine's expected counteroffensive, after Russia's own recent offensive to try to take more territory failed to achieve noticeable results.

LONDON — From the moment Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of Britain took occupancy of 10 Downing Street last October, he has been haunted by his predecessors: Boris Johnson, defenestrated after serial scandals, and Liz Truss, deposed after an ill-fated foray into trickle-down economics. On Thursday afternoon, Mr. Sunak’s government faces a deadline to turn over Mr. Johnson’s Covid-era text messages, diaries and notebooks to a committee investigating Britain’s handling of the pandemic. It is the latest chapter in what seems like a never-ending reckoning with Mr. Johnson’s messy tenure. Yet for all the headlines that Mr. Johnson’s misadventures have commanded in recent weeks — including new allegations of flouting Covid lockdown rules — it is the ghost of Mr. Sunak’s short-lived predecessor, Ms. Truss, that economists say should keep him up at night. Yields on British government bonds soared last week to nearly the levels that brought down Ms. Truss after only 45 days in office.

We’re not base-casing any breakthrough in the trade relationship" with China as part of the review, Bianchi said. Bianchi declined to say when the review would be completed, but added that this was "reasonable" by the end of 2023. Some trade experts in Washington view that date as a possible decision point in the tariff review. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen that eliminating "non-strategic" tariffs would reduce costs for specific goods, while Trade Representative Katherine Tai argued that the duties represent "significant leverage" over China. "On trade right now, there aren’t many similar perspectives," she said of the U.S. and China.
