Brian Chaney says he asked for a supervisor during his arrest in Keego Harbor, Michigan, and Police Officer Richard Lindquist told him that another officer present was in charge. The problem: That second officer was not a supervisor or even a member of the Keego Harbor Police Department. Lindquist no longer works for the Keego Harbor police and the AP was unable to reach him. “People hold police in high esteem,” said Robinson, who spent 13 years as a Detroit police officer. “Basically, I think police officers lie because they can,” Feldman said.

The agency knew officials in Scotland had named snowplows for years and decided a similar effort in Minnesota might draw attention to their winter work, Meyer said. The response in the first year of the contest was overwhelming, with about 24,000 submissions and 122,000 votes cast. “There's a natural infatuation with (snowplows),” said Kristine Bustos-Mihelcic, a spokesperson for the New Mexico Department of Transportation. Minnesota plans to keep its contest going in coming years and Meyer noted each plow keeps its name, which is displayed along the side of the vehicle. “We've got 800 snowplows statewide for the Minnesota Department of Transportation, so we have a lot of snowplows to name,” Meyer said.

The war in Ukraine has proven a need to rethink air superiority, the top US Air Force officer said. "Air superiority still matters — it may be for shorter periods of time because it's just unaffordable to do it for longer periods of time." For air operations, air supremacy means "the opposing force is incapable of effective interference," according to the Air Force, while air superiority means the military can conduct operations without significant "prohibitive interference" from air and missile threats. AdvertisementA Mig-29 fighter of the Ukrainian air force is seen on a mission in Ukraine's war-hit east Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2023. A survey by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York found that Americans' inflation expectations have reached their lowest point in nearly three years. Hours after, he was projected to win the New Hampshire primary race even though his name wasn’t on the ballot. “In politics, you run like you’re down when you’re winning or when you’re losing,” Biden campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond said Wednesday. “I think President Biden’s going to help people win, in the end. First, how do news outlets and their employees cover hot-button topics in a time of stark political divides and strong personal brands? And second, as its journalists allege, has Australia’s beleaguered public broadcaster been so weakened by underfunding and right-wing political attacks that it will not stand up for its journalists, especially people of color and women? “I was embarrassed that a group of 156 lawyers could laugh at how easy it was to manipulate the ABC,” Mr. Lyons said, according to multiple sources.

SUMMER, 1976, by David Auburn. Read by Laura Linney and Jessica Hecht. Yet audio turns out to be the ideal way to experience “Summer, 1976,” a memory play by David Auburn that opened earlier this year at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater in New York. The veteran actresses Laura Linney and Jessica Hecht, reprising their stage roles, portray Diana and Alice, two women looking back at an unlikely friendship formed over one summer decades past. Alice, in turn, initially judges Diana to be “uptight,” but she grudgingly revises her opinion when Diana accepts her offer of weed on their daughters’ play date.

Some in the news media were reluctant to direct their audiences to Mr. Trump, especially shortly after he left office, for fear that it would only amplify his lies about his election loss. Since 2016, both Republican and Democratic leaders have often agreed that it helps Democrats to have Mr. Trump at the political fore. CNN —For the US, Saturday’s Taiwan election results signal the continuation of heightened tension with China over the issue of Taiwan’s sovereignty. Investing in the stock market and gambling at a casino can both theoretically make you rich — and both come with risk. But that belief could wind up costing you "literally hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars," Sethi said. The stock market has its dips, but it has always bounced back. And generally speaking, someone with money invested in the stock market will be better off in the long run than someone who just held onto their cash. So even in a "bad" year, you're probably better off having some of your money invested rather than all in savings.

Russia fired North Korean missiles at Ukraine on December 30, January 2 and 4, per South Korea. AdvertisementRussia's use of North Korean missiles in Ukraine will help us figure out how effective they actually are on the battlefield, military analysts said. North Korea has been testing a wide range of ballistic and cruise missiles since 2017, launching 68 missiles in 2022, according to the North Korea Missile Test Tracker maintained by the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies. "If Ukraine, for example, proves more successful in shooting down North Korean missiles compared to Russian ones, then we can assume that North Korean technology is not as advanced," he said. Ukraine has already started analyzing what it believes to be debris from a North Korean missile.

Still, legacy media companies including Disney, Paramount Global, Warner Bros. Since the "Great Netflix Correction" of 2022, there isn't a unifying growth narrative for media and entertainment companies. Disney, Paramount Global and NBCUniversal have all pegged 2025 as their flagship streaming services' first full year of profitability. Beyond financial metrics, several executives privately acknowledged morale has become an increasing concern at legacy media companies. One executive noted he's increasingly hearing from peers that running media and entertainment companies just isn't as fun as it was five or 10 years ago.

CNN —The Republican presidential debates have so far produced two big winners – one who will be center stage Wednesday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for the fourth GOP matchup, and another who won’t be there at all. The good news for Haley is that she is now running neck-and-neck for second place with the formerly formidable Florida Gov. In skipping the debates, Trump wagered that without his oversized presence, his opponents would primarily train their fire on each other. With Trump absent, Haley, who thus far has mostly eluded frontal attacks, is more likely to get frontrunner treatment from her rivals on Wednesday night. Chris Christie, the most outspoken critic of Trump in the Republican field, also hopes to make New Hampshire a breakthrough moment.

LONDON (AP) — Britain's polar research ship has crossed paths with the largest iceberg in the world — a “lucky” encounter that enabled scientists to collect seawater samples around the colossal berg as it drifts out of Antarctic waters, the British Antarctic Survey said Monday. It began drifting in recent months, and has now moved into the Southern Ocean, helped by wind and ocean currents. Scientists say it is now likely to be swept along into “iceberg alley” — a common route for icebergs to float toward the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia. What we don’t know is what difference particular icebergs, their scale, and their origins can make to that process," she said. The British Antarctic Survey said its findings will help improve understanding of how climate change is affecting the Southern Ocean and the organisms that live there.

‘Jaja’s African Hair Braiding’Even if the hairstyles in this play weren’t as fabulous as they were, Jocelyn Bioh’s “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding,” about a day in the life of African immigrants working in a Harlem hair-braiding shop, would still be a sparkling Broadway delight.
