Before Elizabeth could make it to Lake Victoria, word came that her father, King George VI, had died. More than 70 years later, Elizabeth's son, King Charles, will visit Kenya this week on a state visit. Buckingham Palace has said Charles' visit, which begins on Tuesday, will acknowledge "painful aspects of the UK and Kenya's shared history". The colonial administration took hundreds of square kilometres of land that communities in western Kenya had lived on for generations and handed it to British settlers. The British government has not been receptive in the past to requests by the Kipsigis and Talai to discuss compensation.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Former UFC champion Francis Ngannou shockingly went the distance in his boxing debut early Sunday morning, even knocking down reigning WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury at one point, but Fury remained undefeated after winning a split decision. Two judges gave Fury the fight by scores of 96-93 and 95-94, and the other judge favored Ngannou 95-94. Good thing for Fury, because Ngannou showed early in the scheduled 10-round fight that he wasn't going anywhere. Ngannou staggered Fury early in the fourth, but Fury stayed on his feet and the rest of the round was fairly even after that. Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, who also made the trip to Saudi Arabia, helped Ngannou get ready for his boxing debut.

The silver was Canada's first medal in women's beach volleyball at a Pan Am Games. A silver medal came with a bonus prize with every fighter in the finals having secured a quota spot for the Paris Olympics. In the women's 75-kilogram Canada's Tammara Thibeault added Pan Am gold to her world and Commonwealth Games titles with a unanimous 5-0 decision over Panama's Atheyna Bylon. "Out of all the tournaments I've been to, I've been able to capture gold and I was missing Pan Ams," said Thibeault. That contribution helped power Mexico into second place on the medal table with 35 gold and 80 total medals.

Markets are wagering both the U.S. Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank are done with hiking. HAWKISH MESSAGINGThe recent messaging from the central bank has been on the hawkish side. The biggest contributors to the third quarter inflation were fuel, rents, and electricity. Fuel prices rose 7.2% from a year ago, reversing two quarters of price falls, with the conflict in the Middle East potentially set to further stoke inflationary pressures. The central bank forecast in August that inflation was only projected to return to the top of the bank's target band of 2-3% in late 2025.

LONDON (AP) — Two of London's Metropolitan Police officers were dismissed from the force on Wednesday after a disciplinary panel concluded that they committed gross misconduct over the stop and search of two Black athletes. Bianca Williams and Ricardo Dos Santos, both professional sprinters, complained to the police watchdog that they were racially profiled by a group of police officers on July 4, 2020. The couple were driving home in London with their 3-month-old infant son in the back seat when police followed their car and pulled them over outside their home. The disciplinary panel heard the officers said they followed the athletes’ vehicle because of Dos Santos’ “appalling” and “suspicious” driving, and that they were doing their duty when they conducted the stop and search. But the panel concluded that two of the officers, Jonathan Clapham and Sam Franks, lied about smelling cannibis during the incident.

Speculators have almost doubled their bullish dollar positions against other G10 currencies this month to the most in a year. The benchmark 10-year yield , which was last at 4.9813%, has climbed some 35 basis points this week, driven by rising expectations that the Federal Reserve is likely to keep interest rates higher for longer and mounting U.S. fiscal concerns. "The move up has been driven by the Fed leaving the market as a price insensitive buyer. The dollar/yen pair tends to closely track changes in long-term Treasury yields, particularly in the 10-year maturity. The dollar held the yen near a two-week low, as growing expectations the U.S. Federal Reserve will keep rates higher for longer had the greenback and U.S. Treasury yields on the rise overnight and markets awaited a speech by Fed Chair Powell. The dollar index , which measures the dollar against a basket of currencies, held steady near Wednesday's high of 106.63 in the Asian morning. "I think it highly likely the Fed Chair will reinforce the more cautious commentary heard from Fed speakers over the past week and half," said Sycamore. The Japanese yen strengthened slightly to 149.77 per dollar, off Wednesday's two-week low of 149.94 but still near the 150-level that markets perceive as a potential trigger for currency intervention by Japanese authorities.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Former Virginia House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn has decided against a bid for governor in 2025 and will instead run next year to represent the competitive northern Virginia congressional seat being vacated by a fellow Democrat, U.S. Rep. Jennifer Wexton. “This is an unfair, devastating reality that she now has to navigate,” Filler-Corn said, adding that she had discussed her plans with Wexton. The open seat dynamic in the Loudoun County-centered 10th District — Filler-Corn said she lives just outside it — could set up a competitive race with implications for party control of the U.S. House. Filler-Corn is a strong fundraiser who led the Democratic House caucus during the national scandal and party strife that exploded after the 2019 discovery of a racist photo in former Gov. Neither has publicly committed to a run and both have also said they are focused on this year's legislative races.
