EU countries vote to weaken law on methane emissions
  + stars: | 2022-12-19 | by ( Kate Abnett | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
The law will be negotiated next year by EU countries, who approved their negotiating position on Monday, and the European Parliament. EU countries said companies should check their infrastructure 12 months after the law takes effect, and then carry out checks on numerous timelines. Alongside the United States, the EU leads the Global Methane Pledge of 150 countries aiming to cut methane emissions 30% by 2030. The EU law would not apply to infrastructure abroad that transports gas into Europe. The EU imports more than 80% of its gas, and most methane emissions associated with that consumption occur abroad.
December 19 - Jordan Staal's goal with 6:27 to play gave the Carolina Hurricanes a 3-2 comeback victory against the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday. However, Pittsburgh's seven-game winning streak, which was the longest active mark in the NHL, came to a close. Derek Stepan and Brady Skjei both had a goal and an assist for the Hurricanes, who have three one-goal victories to begin a four-game homestand. Brock McGinn scored at the 5:03 mark of the third to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead before Skjei provided the equalizer and Staal put home the game-winner. Filip Chytil, Kaapo Kakko and Vincent Trocheck each had a goal and an assist as seven Rangers notched multiple points.
TOKYO, Dec 12 (Reuters) - Japan's Ryuichi Sakamoto, known for his electronic music, including the score for "The Last Emperor," on Monday finished streaming a concert that may be the last for the Academy-award winning composer, who is fighting stage 4 cancer. "My strength has really fallen, so a normal concert of about an hour to ninety minutes would be very difficult," he said. In 2014 he was diagnosed with throat cancer, which was cured after years of treatment. But in January 2021 he said he had been diagnosed with rectal cancer the previous year. In June 2022, he wrote in an essay that the cancer had spread despite multiple operations and was now Stage 4.

A string of climate protests this year involved throwing food at famous pieces of art. But disruptive tactics won't sway those who aren't already concerned about climate change, a sociologist told Insider. "What I've found is that these tactics are likely to be viewed as positive by people who already believe that climate change is a serious social problem," Dylan Bugden, a sociologist at Washington State University who studies global climate change protests, told Insider. In Bugden's research, he's found disruptive and confrontational tactics aren't effective on people who are not already concerned about climate change. BERLIN — Climate activists in Austria on Tuesday attacked a famous painting by artist Gustav Klimt with a black, oily liquid and one then glued himself to glass protecting the painting’s frame. Members of the group Last Generation Austria tweeted they had targeted the 1915 painting “Death and Life” at the Leopold Museum in Vienna to protest their government’s use of fossil energies. After the attack, police arrived at the museum and the black liquid was quickly cleaned off the glass protecting the painting, Austria Press Agency reported. It’s one of the latest pieces of art to be targeted by climate activists to draw attention to global warming. Just Stop Oil activists also glued themselves to the frame of an early copy of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” at London’s Royal Academy of Arts, and to John Constable’s “The Hay Wain” in the National Gallery.

But while the notion of a potential shift in Federal Reserve policy is perfectly reasonable and logical, the word "pivot" - like "transitory" and others before it - should be binned. Shorthand can easily morph into broad-brushed assumptions, leaving traders tied in knots over particular words without really understanding their meaning. When everyone's models are programmed to grab the same word, phrase, or signal, herding behavior and one-way markets can ensue. chartSimilarly, the current obsession on when the Fed will "pivot" away from its most aggressive rate-hiking campaign in 40 years has been perhaps the single biggest driver of financial markets in recent months. chartAvoiding talk of a pivot will reduce the risk of damaging the Fed's credibility in the eyes of some sections of the public and financial markets, as happened with "transitory."
The total represented the highest amount ever collected at a single art auction, according to the auction house, Christie's in New York. Among the priciest works sold was Pointillist pioneer Georges Seurat's Les Poseuses, Ensemble (Petite version), an 1888 oil on canvas depicting three nude women. Cezanne's "La Montagne Sainte-Victoire", a colorful landscape painted from 1888-1890, sold for $137.8 million, another record. And a Gustav Klimt 1903 painting, "Birch Forest," set the high mark for a Klimt work, selling for $104.6 million. Additional pieces from Allen's collection will be offered at auction on Thursday.
An auction of late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's art collection raised just over $1.5 billion. The Christie's auction has set a new record as the biggest art sale in history. The most expensive work was Georges Seurat's "Les Poseuses, Ensemble (Petite version)", which fetched $149.2 million. This painting, which depicts three nude women, is considered a pioneering work of Seurat's signature style of Pointillism. A total of five pieces went for more than $100 million each at the auction in New York on Wednesday night.
NHL roundup: Devils top Flames, run win streak to 7 games

The Devils have won seven straight -- their longest winning streak since winning eight straight from Feb. 6-22, 2011. Golden Knights 4, Maple Leafs 3 (OT)Reilly Smith scored his second goal of the game 23 seconds into overtime and visiting Vegas defeated Toronto. Oilers left winger Evander Kane was stable and transported to a local hospital for a procedure following a serious left wrist laceration in the second period. After Jason Robertson gave Dallas a 1-0 lead at 3:06 of the second period, Winnipeg scored four straight goals in the frame. Dallas, which had outscored its opponents 18-6 during a three-game winning streak entering play Tuesday, seemed shellshocked following the results of the second period.
Ovechkin's power-play goal at 8:55 of the second period came in his 1,287th game with Washington, snapping a tie with Hockey Hall of Famer Gordie Howe. Anthony Mantha set up that goal and scored one of his own before the Coyotes stormed back. Ritchie's first goal of the game sailed just under the crossbar and over the goal line to forge a tie at 9:45. Zetterlund's second goal of the game also snapped New Jersey's eight-game losing streak to Calgary. Gourde finished with a goal and two assists, Tanev added an assist, and Vince Dunn also scored for the Kraken.
THE HAGUE, Netherlands — Climate activists targeted Johannes Vermeer’s masterpiece “Girl with a Pearl Earring” with glue and liquid on Thursday but one of the world’s most iconic paintings was not damaged in the latest of such publicity-seeking stunts. A video posted on Twitter showed one man pouring a can of red substance over another protester who appeared to attempt to glue his head to the glass-protected painting. The second man stuck his hand to the panel holding the centuries-old painting. “Art is defenseless, and the Mauritshuis firmly rejects attempts to damage it for any purpose whatsoever,” the museum said. It refused further comment since it argued it would only give the protesters further publicity.
That was an improvement over the previous year, but still not nearly enough given the threat the climate crisis presents for humanity, Hu told Insider. "I could spend 20 minutes talking about the destruction from climate change. "More people are aware of this climate crisis and that we have to do something about it because of our actions," Harris said. "Journalists don't report on the climate crisis like it is an emergency. Ridiculous stunts like the art action gets the climate crisis into the headlines and millions of people talking."
On Sunday, two climate activists hurled mashed potatoes at “Les Meules,” a valuable Claude Monet painting in a German museum. If climate activists focused only on symbols directly related to what is damaging the planet — like a pipeline or an oil refinery — then it may not have gotten quite the same buzz. If climate activists focused only on symbols directly related to what is damaging the planet — like a pipeline or an oil refinery — then it may not have gotten quite the same buzz. In order to shift the public’s conception of acceptable climate policies, it’s essential the media cover the issue in a big way. “Climate change is no longer just a science story,” said Max Boykoff, lead project investigator for the observatory.
In what has become a familiar scene, two climate protesters splattered a gooey substance on a famous painting, this time defacing a roughly $110-million Claude Monet painting in Germany with mashed potatoes. As visitors milled around Monet’s “Grainstacks” painting Sunday, a man and woman in orange vests hurled containers of mashed potatoes onto the canvas, according to a video taken at the scene. They had set off alarms to distract the staff at the Museum Barberini in Potsdam, where the artwork was displayed, the museum said.
Climate protesters threw mashed potatoes at a $110 million Claude Monet painting in a German museum. The "Haystacks" painting was acquired by German billionaire Plattner for $110.7 million in 2019. The video showed the two activists kneeling on the floor after they pelted the painting "Les Meules," or "Haystacks," with mashed potatoes at the Museum Barberini, which is located in the city of Potsdam. And all you are afraid of is tomato soup or mashed potatoes on a painting," said one of the protesters in northeast Germany, according to a English-subtitled video tweeted by Last Generation. "Does it take mashed potatoes on a painting to make you listen?
Police have arrested two climate activists who threw mashed potatoes at a Claude Monet painting in a museum in Germany to protest fossil fuel production, a stunt which caused no damage to the art. The German climate group Last Generation took credit for the stunt. The group posted video footage on Twitter showing a man and a woman tossing mashed potatoes at the painting, kneeling in front of it and gluing their hands to the wall. And all you are afraid of is tomato soup or mashed potatoes on a painting," the woman shouted in German while kneeling in front of Monet's painting. The Monet painting will be on display again by Wednesday, the museum said in a statement.
Police arrested a pair of German protesters who, in a bid to bring attention to the perils of climate change, threw mashed potatoes at a Claude Monet painting that once sold for more than $110 million. That painting was also behind protective glass and unharmed in the incident, according to the museum. And all you are afraid of is tomato soup or mashed potatoes on a painting," one of the protesters says, according to an English subtitled version of the video. "This painting is not going to be worth anything if we have to fight over food," the protester adds. Born in 1840, Monet was the leading French Impressionist landscape painter, according to the National Gallery.
The Justice Department on Tuesday named two veteran prosecutors to lead its money-laundering and asset-recovery section. Brent Wible, a veteran federal prosecutor whose latest stint at the Justice Department began in May 2020, has been appointed the section’s new chief, a Justice Department spokesman said. The Justice Department earlier this year announced the formation of an interagency task force dedicated to enforcing sanctions and other economic countermeasures imposed on Russia, dubbed Task Force KleptoCapture. The money-laundering section’s international unit has worked closely with the task force, officials say. Justice Department leaders have said the agency intends to pay closer attention to victims’ rights when resolving cases of corporate crime.

“We don’t need a crystal ball to see a further weakening of German industry in the coming months. The full impact of higher energy prices will only be felt in the last months of the year,” he said. Energy prices started rising last fall, and then shot even higher when Russia invaded Ukraine in late February, sparking an energy standoff between Europe and Moscow. Energy costs at Prysmian’s six German factories are expected to soar to €20 million ($20 million) this year from just €5 million ($5 million) in 2021. “German industry, the so-called ‘Mittlestand’, the small and medium [sized] companies, are quite resilient and adaptable,” he said.
CNN —Ever the pioneer, Lizzo crossed off another first during the Washington, DC stop of her tour – playing an approximately 200-year-old crystal flute that belonged to a former US president. The Library of Congress has maintained the flute in its vault for decades before allowing Lizzo to play it onstage. “B,***h, I just twerked and played James Madison’s crystal flute from the 1800s,” she said incredulously. Lizzo visited the Library of Congress to see and play James Madison's 200-year-old crystal flute. He later donated the crystal flute, along with 1,700 instruments, to the Library in 1941, where the flute has remained until its stage debut with Lizzo.
