LAS VEGAS (AP) — The GOP presidential candidates will compete for donors and offer their strong support for Israel in its war with Hamas as they address the annual gathering of a major Republican Jewish group this weekend. In the wake of the attack, the Republican National Committee announced that the Republican Jewish Coalition will be co-sponsoring the third GOP presidential debate, scheduled for Nov. 8 in Miami. His widow, Miriam Adelson, has remained a major party donor and benefactor for the Republican Jewish Coalition but has vowed to stay neutral in the presidential primary. The event marks the first time most of the GOP candidates have made their way to Nevada, a state expected to be the third to weigh in on the field in voting early next year. Separate from the Jewish Coalition, DeSantis is to speak Saturday morning to a Nevada Republican group at a casino-resort on the Las Vegas Strip.

Southwest Airlines said Thursday it plans to slow its capacity growth next year, citing moderating travel demand as booking patterns shift back to pre-pandemic norms. Southwest will expand its flying between 10% and 12% in the first quarter of 2024 from a year earlier, down from a previous forecast of as much as 16% growth, Southwest said in an earnings release. Adjusting for the impact of labor contract adjustments and other one-time items, the company earned 38 cents per share. The company forecast negative margins in the last three months of the year, citing weaker demand even for year-end holidays. Southwest and Spirit shares were each down more than 4% in premarket trading, while Frontier was off 1%.

All Blacks coach Ian Foster changed his lock combination again with Brodie Retallick restored to the lineup and Sam Whitelock returning to the list of replacements in the only change to the starting team. New Zealand believe the 35-year-old Whitelock, playing his third World Cup final, is most effective coming off the bench, and could bring an injection of energy at a time when South Africa are refreshing their forwards. Six of New Zealand's matchday squad for the game are previous World Cup winners and the 23-man team has a collective total of 1,387 caps, making it the most experienced All Blacks squad for any of their record five World Cup finals appearances. "We've woken up this week to find ourselves in a World Cup final and we've worked to deal with all the distractions. They (South Africa) are great at their style, we want to be great at ours," added Foster.

EU’s best way to close its US growth gap: growth

BRUSSELS, Oct 26 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The European Union would have a better chance of catching the U.S. if it aimed for growth, instead of rearranging the regulatory deck chairs. Lowering political barriers in the 27-country single market could boost investment without breaking the bank on subsidies, Jean-François van Boxmeer told Breakingviews, citing a new European Round Table for Industry report. In the telecommunications sector, the European Commission has kept four providers in most of the EU’s markets, and screens out Chinese equipment-makers over security concerns. The European Commission reckons completing the single market by 2030 would hike EU GDP by 12%, or 713 billion euros. “Trump made us smaller,” Mr. Christie tells his audience as he prowls the stage, explaining that he wants to go after Mr. Trump for two reasons: “One, he deserves it. Almost any pollster will tell you that Mr. Trump’s support is soft once you look beyond the MAGA base. Mr. Christie is the only candidate speaking directly, specifically, to this fear. But in national surveys, Mr. Christie is still polling in the low single digits. But there is something deeper at work here, and it holds clues about what it would take to attack Mr. Trump successfully.

GOP presidential candidate Chris Christie has a basic message for House Republicans: Get a speaker. AdvertisementAdvertisementNearly three weeks after Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California was ousted as House speaker, House Republicans have been unable to coalesce around a successor. For GOP presidential candidate Chris Christie, he's already seen enough. Once a Trump ally, Christie in recent years has become a major critic of the former president, which has both elevated his candidacy and turned off sizable numbers of GOP voters. However, of all of the early-voting states, Christie is best positioned in New Hampshire, where he's largely focused his campaign.

HOUSTON (AP) — The challenges facing Houston’s next mayor are familiar to many big cities: crime, crumbling infrastructure, budget shortfalls and a lack of affordable housing. “This (new) mayor comes along at a time when the city is doing well, though the city faces issues,” said Bob Harvey, president and CEO of the Greater Houston Partnership, a local business group. They highlight what they see as Houston’s failings while touting it as an international city teeming with diversity. Others in contention are former head of Houston’s public transit system Gilbert Garcia, attorney Lee Kaplan, Houston City Councilman Robert Gallegos and former council members Jack Christie and M.J. Khan. The city’s challenges are due in part to its explosive growth over the past decade.

While most federal borrowers were not required to make any payments for nearly three years of President Joe Biden's first term, they were also hopeful for broad debt relief. Now the Education Department is in the process of crafting a new plan under a different law. Here's what Republican presidential candidates are saying about the Education Department — and how it could impact millions of student-loan borrowers. And while private banks administer non-federal loans, borrowers with private debt often face higher interest rates without the option for federal relief.

The former Trump attorney willavoid jail time but agreed to testify as a witness and pleaded guilty to six misdemeanors for conspiracy to commitintentional interference, downgraded from felony charges she had faced. He pleaded guilty Friday to a single felony, conspiracy to commit filingfalse documents. Trial dates have not been set, and Trump has pleaded not guilty. But guilty pleas, Williams said, are now evidence that crimes were committed as Trump tried to make Joe Biden’s 2020 victory disappear.

For many if not most Republican primary voters, Mr. Trump is the equivalent of an incumbent president (and to some, he still is president), and incumbents generally get renominated with ease. Several members of the group had positive things to say about Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley and some of the other candidates. So far, the other Republican candidates for president aren’t breaking through and giving these voters reasons to pass on Mr. Trump’s candidacy. And how do you attack and beat Mr. Trump when so few Republicans — including these 11 — want to see Mr. Trump attacked? NEW YORK (AP) — Those miracles of modern science, the Rolling Stones, celebrated the release of their first album of original music in 18 years with a Manhattan club gig on Thursday. Mick Jagger alluded to past stunts the Stones had done in New York to tout new music over the years, including performing on a flatbed truck on Fifth Avenue. “Hackney Diamonds,” coming at a time many fans wondered if the Rolling Stones would ever bother again with new music, has been well received by critics, with many noting the crisp energy the band displayed. This time, the bar band was the Rolling Stones. Lady Gaga, dressed in a maroon sequined pantsuit, appeared to recreate her duet — duel, really — with Jagger on the new “Sweet Sounds of Heaven.”“New York, the Rolling Stones!” she said before leaving, after exchanging kisses with Jagger and Richards.

It later emerged that the document had been stolen, and it was eventually repatriated to Italy.
