Comparisons were drawn to the 1968 Chicago convention, when national unrest during the civil rights movement and over the Vietnam War sowed an atmosphere of violence and chaos. Chicago Police Department officers were trained to deploy a disciplined and patient approach that focused on protecting free speech and allowing people to lawfully protest, a department official said. “The department trained more than a year for this,” a Chicago Police Department official who was not authorized to speak publicly told NBC News. “We are trying to get away from the old image of the Chicago Police Department,” the official said. So it might surprise investors that the automaker believes its new path to profitability for electric vehicles will first be led by smaller, more affordable vehicles. “We’re quite convinced that the highest adoption rates for electric vehicles will be in the affordable segment on the lower size-end of the range,” he told CNBC on Thursday. Gjaja’s comments came a day after the automaker announced updates to its EV strategy that will cost up to $1.9 billion. Gjaja said the decision wasn’t taken lightly, especially the cancellation of the upcoming three-row vehicle, which Ford CEO Jim Farley and other executives had been touting as a game changer for several years. He said the Ford, in part, developed the skunkworks team to prove that Ford can compete against the Chinese automakers.

Americans are increasingly struggling with credit card debt and other loans, and consumers are paying more for basic banking services like A.T.M. And 42 percent of households carrying balances on credit cards reported that their overall debt level was “unmanageable,” up from 38 percent in 2022, the network found. More borrowers have been falling behind on credit card payments, especially those who have maxed out spending on their cards, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Making payments on credit cards as well as car loans, student loans and other installment loans has been increasingly challenging for consumers, the financial network found. (The analysis, which the network publishes annually, is based on public data and a nationally representative survey of consumers.)

CNN —The Justice Department has filed a civil lawsuit against the real estate company RealPage, alleging the company’s software uses landlord data to artificially inflate the price of rent across the United States by quelling competition in the market. According to the complaint, the Texas-based company uses nonpublic data from landlords to train RealPage’s algorithm for pricing recommendations, creating a “vast scheme to subvert the competitive process,” one Justice Department official said. The lawsuit from the Justice Department comes amid a rise in corporate landlords – companies that own large numbers of rental units – a fact that was central to the case. “In a free market, these landlords would otherwise be competing independently to attract renters based on pricing, discounts, concessions, lease terms, and other dimensions of apartment leasing,” the Justice Department said in announcing the charges. “RealPage also uses this scheme and its substantial data trove to maintain a monopoly in the market for commercial revenue management software.”This is a developing story.

The biggest chunk – about $1.9 million – was spent by Trump’s campaign and fundraising committees on a Trump-owned company that operates his jet. Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson for Trump’s campaign, said that “committees are paying the fair market rate for all venues and services” provided by Trump businesses. The dynamic of candidates shelling out thousands on Trump’s businesses while vying for his endorsement – which can make or break Republican campaigns – is an example of how politics has boosted his businesses’ bottom line. About 150 congressional candidates have reported spending campaign funds at Trump businesses, including some Democrats in the years before his first presidential bid. Walker’s campaign spent a total of nearly $215,000 at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s West Palm Beach golf club and his Las Vegas hotel.

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., fended off several primary challengers Tuesday, NBC News projects, a victory for progressives after two of her fellow members of the “squad” suffered defeats this summer. Omar defeated former Minneapolis City Council member Don Samuels, who lost to her by just 2 percentage points in the 2022 primary, and two other challengers in Minnesota’s 5th District. Unlike other progressives who have sharply criticized Israel, Omar did not face an onslaught of attack ads from outside groups. At the same point in the 2022 primary, her campaign had spent just $71,000. Samuels’ campaign, meanwhile, spent $1.2 million on this year’s race.

The message to the airline industry: You've had a few too many screwups to be left to your own devices. Over the past couple of years, the Biden administration has introduced a slew of rules and services intended to make airline passengers' lives easier. The airline industry seems to be relatively on board with the refund idea. But there are plenty of other problems with the airline industry that need solving — some the government can take care of, and some the government is causing. Gallup polls suggest more Americans have a negative view of the airline industry than a positive one.

That's made Burt even more confident about his long-held thesis, which many property owners are ignoring. For example, flood insurance costs in coastal cities could rise from $5,000 per year to $15,000 under the updated national flood insurance pricing set by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Burt said. And that's assuming flood risk doesn't continue to rise over time, which Burt believes is unlikely. That would be disastrous for all property owners in those markets, even those not trying to sell. Homeowners in cities most vulnerable to the effects of climate change should be sweating, if they aren't already.
