It was the third diagnosed concussion of his NFL career after two back-to-back concussions in 2022. But precisely who goes on to have CTE or other long-term health issues after a head collision is somewhat of a mystery. “But not everyone who has repetitive concussions develop brain health problems later in life,” Rowson said. “But there are data, obviously, looking at populations of former NFL players that show they have a higher incidence of neurological disease than the general public,” Alberts said. A player’s return to fully practice or participate in an NFL game is dependent on medical clearance—including from independent doctors—always putting the player’s health first,” the NFL said.

During Tuesday’s presidential debate, former President Donald Trump repeated unfounded claims that Haitian immigrants “are eating dogs and cats … eating people’s pets” in Springfield, Ohio. “The fact that Donald Trump wants to double down on something so ridiculous just breaks my heart again,” Smith said. The rumor follows years of insults hurled at Haitians and Haitian Americans, including unfounded claims of cannibalism, and Trump’s hostility toward Haitian immigrants during his administration. “I work every day with Haitian immigrants, and no one works as hard as them,” he said. “It’s really unreal.”On social media, Haitians have expressed disgust about the depiction, while others “won’t even entertain something so crazy,” Smith said.

Michael Proctor, the Massachusetts state trooper suspended over his conduct while he was investigating Karen Read, will not testify in another high-profile case on which he was a lead investigator, prosecutors said. The department devoted dozens of additional officers to investigating the case, the filing says. The filing cites Proctor’s testimony in the Read case, in which he testified that he made derogatory comments about Read to his family, friends and supervisors, and it says the prosecutor’s office is reviewing data extracted from the trooper’s cellphone. The agency had opened an internal affairs investigation into allegations of "serious misconduct" raised at trial, a state police official said at the time. He pleaded guilty to wire fraud, interstate transportation for a scheme to defraud and unlawful monetary transaction, the prosecutor's office said.

Low-income families who are robbed of their grocery funds may no longer get reimbursed if Congress doesn’t act by Sept. 30. Since late 2022, states have been authorized to use federal dollars to pay back victims of SNAP skimming thanks to a provision passed by lawmakers. Dutch Ruppersberger, D-Md., who has advocated on behalf of SNAP skimming victims for years. “It’s frustrating and, frankly, very confusing that they don’t view this as a priority.”Despite the directive expiring, SNAP skimming continues to be a pervasive problem. Taking a high dose of ADHD drugs is linked to more than five times greater risk of developing psychosis or mania, according to a new study published Thursday in the American Journal of Psychiatry. The research is among the first to find a relationship between escalating doses of the drugs — amphetamines, in particular — and a greater likelihood of psychotic symptoms. The drugs include Adderall, Vyvanse and generic amphetamines, such as dextroamphetamine. The medium dosage — 20 mg to 40 mg of Adderall, 50 mg to 100 mg of Vyvanse or 15 mg to 30 mg of dextroamphetamine — was linked to a 3.5 times higher risk. There was no increased risk of psychosis with another ADHD drug, Ritalin, which isn’t an amphetamine.

Owning a home makes some people feel more confident about their prospects for retirement — but that may be misguided, some experts say. Of those who said they were ahead or on schedule, 42% cite an early start in retirement savings helped them get ahead. The survey polled 6,657 adults, including 2,603 retired adults and 4,054 adult workers, in August. "Homeowners are actually more likely to be overconfident in their retirement readiness," Chen said. "There's a lot of misconception in terms of how people assess whether they are ahead or not in retirement."

Lawyers for Caroline Ellison, the star witness in the prosecution of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, are recommending no prison time for their client’s role in the implosion of the crypto empire that was run by her former boss and ex-boyfriend. Judge Lewis Kaplan, who presided over Bankman-Fried’s case, cited Ellison’s testimony when he decided in March to sentence the FTX founder to 25 years behind bars. Ellison, who ran Alameda Research, agreed to a plea deal in December 2022, a month after FTX spiraled into bankruptcy. Bankman-Fried forced Ellison into a sort-of isolation, culminating in her moral compass being “warped,” the lawyers say. Her former roommates and ex-FTX executives, Nishad Singh and Gary Wang, will be sentenced in October and November, respectively.

Since Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee, Trump has constantly attempted to portray her as weak on immigration and crime. On Friday, Harris also chose not to mention mass deportation during a radio interview with Univision, when the host asked her to summarize her argument to undecided Hispanic voters. “There is a way in which those [crime and immigration] issues in particular are also about bigger things,” said Adrianne Shropshire, executive director of BlackPAC, a group working to mobilize Black voters for Harris and Democrats. And many of those voters might recoil from these Trump policies on crime and immigration if they heard more about them. “What he is hoping is that the Black voters who he is [courting] don’t see that stuff,” Shropshire said.

Cofounded by Mesa Quantum CEO Sristy Agrawal and CTO Wale Lawal in 2023, the company has won a $1.9 million Space Force grant to demonstrate its alternative to GPS technology in military and civilian applications. J2 Ventures cofounder and managing partner, Alex Harstrick, told CNBC his fund backed Mesa Quantum in part because of the founders' extraordinary technical background. Harstrick said his fund hopes that Mesa Quantum will have its first demonstration of mass scale "atomic clocks" (quantum timing sensors) validated by a top-tier semiconductor manufacturing partner" in the next few years. "The U.S. government has established major initiatives to spur innovation in this area and is seeking to purchase a million quantum sensors each year -- if they can simply be mass-produced," she explained. With its grant funding and seed round in place, Agrawal said, Mesa Quantum will look to grow its team in Boulder, especially hiring atomic molecular and optical physicists, engineers and manufacturing experts this year.

After spending a few months researching places to live, New York City — the borough of Brooklyn in particular — stood out. "Cities like Boston that used to seem affordable are feeling just as expensive as New York City for a fraction of the experience," she added. The median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,300 compared to $2,600 in Boston, per Zillow. Most places don't have air conditioning. Ashley PackardAfter a tiring seven-hour flight from Boston to Frankfurt, a three-hour drive from the airport, and six flights of stairs to our apartment, we arrived in Düsseldorf and quickly learned air conditioning isn't really a thing in Germany. Instead, we cranked the metal shutters down early in the morning to keep hot air out and rolled them up at night to let in cool air. We also stayed hydrated, added ice cubes to the cats' water bowls, tried not to use the oven, took cool showers, and ordered a standing fan. It blew my mind to learn that only about one in eight German households use air conditioning.
