In special counsel Jack Smith’s election subversion case, Trump’s bid to put the trial off until after the election appears to have failed. Meanwhile, the criminal case against Trump in New York is also scheduled for March. For instance, prosecutor Molly Gaston pointedly confronted Trump attorney John Lauro with his own public statements during the hearing Monday. Chutkan, who early in the case against Trump made plain her decisions would be clear and final, told Lauro, “Mr. “I take seriously the request that Mr. Trump be treated like any other defendant, and I intend to do so,” Chutkan said.

Streaming services continue to raise prices, and they don't appear ready to stop anytime soon. AdvertisementAdvertisementHow much are streaming services worth to you? And two big takeaways — to Wall Street's delight and customers' chagrin — are to raise prices and crack down on password sharing. Netflix saw a surge of sign-ups in the aftermath of its password-sharing crackdown, Insider's Nathan McAlone writes. Meanwhile, analysis from Bernstein Research found the combined monthly price of a handful of popular streaming services increased 24% from last year, writes Insider's Alistair Barr.

Netflix, Disney, and other video streaming providers have raised prices a lot in the past year. The analysis predicts which streaming subscription services are likely to raise prices again soon. The Bernstein sales specialist also fired up an interesting analysis, using Nielsen data and other industry stats, that shows which streaming services are mostly likely to raise prices again. In other words, you're probably going to pay more for Netflix, Hulu, and Peacock before too long. However, over a longer period, it usually takes a consistent supply of solid hits to drive repeat viewing habits that support higher prices, Schilsky explained.

Bill Barr said Trump shouldn't get avoid trials simply because he's running for president. While Barr thinks Trump could be convicted in some cases, he doesn't want Trump to face prison time. Even though he has been critical of Trump, Barr has been outspoken in his attacks on some prosecutions of the former president. "I don't know of any attorney general who would walk away from it." Despite that prediction, the former attorney general doesn't think the former president should go to prison.

Researchers found programmers often prefer ChatGPT's (wrong) answers on coding questions. But a pre-print paper released this month suggests ChatGPT has a neat little trick to convince people it's smart: A kind of style over substance approach. Researchers from Purdue University analyzed ChatGPT's replies to 517 questions posted to Stack Overflow, an essential Q&A site for software developers and engineers. The Purdue findings follow research from Stanford and UC Berkeley academics indicating that the large language model is getting dumber. In response to the Purdue research, computer scientist and AI expert Timnit Gebru tweeted: "Great that Stack Overflow is being destroyed by OpenAI +friends."

Hunter Biden's legal troubles just got a whole lot worse. Meanwhile, Biden's plea deal for tax crimes and a gun charge has collapsed. The surprise announcement came as federal prosecutors suggested that a plea deal with the president's son is now effectively dead after a Trump-appointed judge refused to accept it. Many in the GOP are still furious over Weiss' role in Hunter Biden's now-potentially dead plea deal. "'[T]he parties are at an impasse and are not in agreement on either a plea agreement or a diversion agreement," prosecutors wrote in the court filing.

The generative AI boom has sparked a race to collect data for model training. Relx, the owner of LexisNexis, recently warned customers about sharing its legal data with AI bots. I reached out to Relx and a LexisNexis spokespeople to ask whether LexisNexis has seen its legal data being scraped by bots or otherwise collected by outside companies for use in AI model training. Another AI legal startup called Casetext was recently acquired for $650 million by Thomson Reuters, the owner of Westlaw, an established legal data service that competes with LexisNexis. Insider took a look at 10 of the hottest AI stocks from earlier this year and analyzed how they've performed since peaking. This could be a short-term blip, or a reaction to higher long-term interest rates, which can depress high-growth tech stocks. (And, yes, using automation and AI to buy AI stocks is probably a self-fulfilling prophecy that also can't last).

Some of these bots have been helpful because they send users to sources of original content online. The most active one is probably Googlebot, which automatically collects web information so Google can later rank and serve it up in Search results. It's called GPTbot and it's being used to scrape and collect online content for AI model training. So what is Clarke's advice for other online content creators when it comes to GPTbot? What is the incentive that OpenAI offers to have these content creators allow GPTbot to crawl and scrape their sites?

By increasing the degree of risk attributed to certain assets, the proposed rules would require banks to hold proportionately more capital, potentially eating into returns on equity and profits. Making such lending more expensive will shrink credit available to historically under-served borrowers, something the industry is likely to fight, he said. Chen Xu, an attorney in the financial institutions group at Debevoise & Plimpton, said the new rules viewed high-revenue business lines as higher risk. Morgan Stanley (MS.N) analysts say the largest banks may take up to four years to set aside profits to comply with the new capital rules. Dennis Kelleher, head of the financial reform advocacy group Better Markets, said the banking industry had made similar complaints in the past which he believed had proven unfounded.

Dygert, the golden girl of American cycling, reduced the individual time trial field to also-rans on the opening day of the UCI World Championships in Glasgow. Dygert, whose marriage to cyclist Logan Owen ended in divorce in 2020, has had three surgeries on her leg. Dygert has further opportunities to grow her medal collection in Glasgow, in the track team pursuit and then in the women's road time race and time trial. Next up for me is the team pursuit where the girls and I are focused on bringing home another medal for the U.S.

I watch the 10-year Treasury yield every weekday morning. If the 10-year Treasury bond yield stays around 4.1%, the cost of these mortgages could rise in coming days and set new 20-year highs. The 10-year Treasury bond yield is a common way to do this discounting. If the 10-year Treasury yield is 4%, that $10 billion is suddenly worth a whole lot less in today's money. This is often why tech stocks fall when the 10-year Treasury bond yield spikes.
