Editor’s Note: John Avlon is a CNN senior political analyst and anchor. A truly stunning number of former Cabinet-level Trump administration officials are trying to warn Republican primary voters that their old boss’s reelection would be a disaster for our country. Share them with friends, family and neighbors who might be tempted to go along with the crowd and vote for Trump. But what about the Republican elected officials who have scrambled to endorse Trump before a single person has actually voted? So the voters of Iowa and New Hampshire have a disproportionate responsibility over the next few days.

LONDON (AP) — It took Kevin De Bruyne less than five minutes to show why his return from injury could be so crucial for Manchester City in the second half of the Premier League season. De Bruyne had not made a league appearance since the opening round of the season in August, but it looked like he'd never been away. And in stoppage time, he lifted a perfectly weighted ball into the box for substitute Oscar Bobb to score his first Premier League goal and complete the comeback. Only two games were played Saturday with half of the Premier League teams having the weekend off for a short winter break. It was the 21-year-old Palmer’s ninth league goal of the season and fifth from the penalty spot after joining from Man City in the offseason.

Republicans want President Joe Biden out of office. And they've taken the clashes to an unprecedented new level: If you can't beat 'em, impeach 'em. "Secretary Mayorkas has brazenly refused to enforce the laws passed by Congress that knowingly made our country less safe. But Justice did not prosecute three other Republicans – White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, former DOJ official Jeffrey Clark and former Trump Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino – whom the panel referred for legal action. A U.S. official said more than a dozen locations were targeted in strikes that were not just symbolic but intended to weaken the Houthis' military capabilities. The United States and allies had deployed a naval task force to the area in December, and the situation had escalated in recent days. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who is in hospital due to surgery complications, said in a statement that the strikes targeted Houthi drones, ballistic and cruise missiles, costal radar and air surveillance. The United States also accused Iran of being involved operationally in the Houthi attacks, providing the military capabilities and intelligence to carry them out. The United States has troops on the ground in Syria and Iraq, and has previously retaliated for attacks there by Iran-backed groups.

At the same time, the party is already juggling two potential impeachment pushes. The first potential shutdown would be on Jan. 19, covering roughly 20% of the federal government, per The Post. The top Republican's words are also a great reminder of why this current impeachment push is unlikely to go anywhere. Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, makes a statement to the press outside the U.S. Capitol about testifying publicly to the House Oversight and Accountability Committee on Wednesday, December 13, 2023. House committees released reports Monday recommending that Hunter Biden be held in contempt of Congress over what they called his "flagrant defiance" of a subpoena related to the impeachment inquiry into his father, President Joe Biden. Hunter Biden "must be held accountable for his unlawful actions," said reports from the House Judiciary and Oversight committees. Republicans initiated contempt proceedings in December, after Hunter Biden refused to sit for a closed-door deposition with congressional investigators looking into corruption allegations against the Democratic president and his family. Biden had instead offered to testify publicly before Congress, but Oversight Chairman Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., rejected the proposal.

A classified briefing Tuesday on Ukraine devolved into a shouting match about border security as senators described a tense meeting that did little to break the Senate’s stalemate over whether to include tighter immigration policies in the aid package. The first question instead of asking our panelists, he called on Lankford to give a five-minute talk about the negotiations on border,” Schumer said. “It was just obvious, elephant in the room issue of the administration, in their supplemental request – the second-largest element in the supplemental request is for the border. Schumer said earlier Tuesday that Republicans are free to bring up a border security package as an amendment, and if it can get 11 Democratic votes, it can pass. “They have a golden opportunity if they wanted to do border,” Schumer said.

But first, Congress and the White House must hash out a deal to beef up U.S. border security. "I don't care how we pay for it," Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., said of the Israel aid in an appearance on CNBC's "Squawk Box." "The rest of the riddle is not going to be solved unless we have meaningful border security," Marshall said. "House Republicans have resolved that any national security supplemental package must begin with our own border. We believe both issues can be agreed upon if Senate Democrats and the White House will negotiate reasonably," Johnson said on X.

Schumer would need nine Republicans to overcome a procedural hurdle, something that many Republicans signaled Monday they wouldn’t help Democrats do. “It may require a failed cloture vote on the supplemental before Sen. Schumer realizes we are serious,” Sen. John Cornyn, a Texas Republican, told reporters. She added she too would vote against advancing the supplemental package if “we don’t have substantial changes” to border policy. But Thune complained Monday the White House “hasn’t gotten the sufficient level of seriousness yet” about the border crisis. Murphy warned US allies should “be very worried about what Republicans are doing.”“Listen, I have all sorts of domestic priorities I care about.
