Imane Khelif of Algeria, the boxer at the center of a controversy involving eligibility and fairness that has made the women’s boxing tournament at the Paris Olympics a cultural flashpoint, advanced to the semifinals in her weight class on Saturday. The result guaranteed that Khelif, 25, will leave the Games with her first Olympic medal. But it also ensured that the furor over her participation will continue. The International Olympic Committee, which is overseeing the boxing competition in Paris after it revoked the I.B.A.’s authority, called the decision “arbitrary.” In recent days, the I.O.C. has strongly supported the boxers by stating flatly and repeatedly that they are women and not transgender.

Experts are also using the latest techniques to spill secrets hidden within discoveries made decades ago, with new research this week “digitally dissecting” an unusual mummy found in 1935. The "screaming woman" whose mummified remains were discovered in 1935 may have died violently, a new study suggests. — To keep swimmers and beachgoers safe, scientists are using artificial intelligence to detect juvenile sharks, which like to hang out near the shore. 1 way to save money on your wedding is to cut the guest count," Shane McMurray, CEO and co-founder of The Wedding Report, recently told CNBC. "What we saw was that the pandemic gave people permission to have a tiny wedding," Miller said. In 2023, the average guest list was 134, The Wedding Report found. Here are ways experts suggest reducing your wedding guest list without cutting ties with family and friends in the process:1. Choosing a more intimate venue with a smaller capacity can help you maintain a solid guest list limit, experts say.

Pitching the C-390 in the USA C-390 aircraft flies during an air show. Pete Syme/Business InsiderWhile there haven't been any public negotiations by the Pentagon to add any C-390s to its fleet, Embraer has made moves to pitch the plane to the US market. In an inaugural visit earlier this year, the Brazilian defense firm showcased the C-390 at its facilities in Melbourne, Florida, to "an important and diverse audience," the company said in a March statement. According to a press release, the event hosted a "diverse guest list of government authorities, military officials, prospects, and partners" and featured the A-29 Super Tucano, a turboprop light attack aircraft flown by some South American militaries. The Embraer president da Costa Jr. said the A-29 was built "just hours away in Jacksonville, Florida," hinting that the C-390 could be manufactured in the US as well — a common requirement for foreign aircraft operated by the US military.

After 25 years of autocratic rule, a significant portion of Venezuelans in the country and in exile had enormous expectations of change. But of “those millions who have emigrated from Venezuela, criminals are the minority,” he said. In addition, experts on Venezuela told Noticias Telemundo that there is no evidence of a state policy aimed at sending criminals to other countries. The Trump campaign has also stated that Kamala Harris is “intentionally importing millions of illegals in hopes of turning them into Democratic voters,” which is also false. “The campaign does not comment on hypothetical situations,” Florez said, adding that “the Republican National Committee’s statement is identical to that of the Trump campaign."

Federal court records show that Joshua Conner Jones entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors regarding the treatment of two inmates at the Walker County jail. Jones agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to deprive an inmate of their rights related to the 2023 death of Tony Mitchell. The plea agreement indicated there were five co-conspirators in the mistreatment that led to Mitchell’s death, an indication that the investigation is ongoing and more people could be charged in the death. Court documents did not name the inmate who died, but Bower confirmed the charge was related to Mitchell’s 2023 death. Prosecutors wrote in the plea agreement that Jones admitted that “collectively we did it.

CINCINNATI — The San Francisco Giants’ Blake Snell threw his first no-hitter Friday night at Great American Ball Park, striking out 11 Cincinnati Reds in the 3-0 victory. Snell got Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz to fly out to right-fielder Mike Yastrzemski, a defensive replacement. Snell threw 114 pitches and walked three. Simone Biles competes in the balance beam event of the artistic gymnastics women's all around final on August 1. Loic Venance/AFP/Getty ImagesThe competition was fierce and the Olympic medal race stayed tight, but as is so often the case, Thursday’s stories from the 2024 Summer Games can’t be told with statistics alone. Biles held off a spirited challenge from brilliant Brazilian Rebeca Andrade, who once again won silver, and Biles’ teammate Suni Lee took the bronze. She later celebrated her silver medal with them by running a lap of the entire arena floor carrying the country’s flag. Canadian 17-year-old superstar Summer McIntosh also won her second gold medal of the Games.

Biles' post on the social media platform X seemed to reference Trump's recent controversial comments that immigrants are "taking Black jobs." The Republican presidential nominee had said, "They're taking Black jobs now and it could be 18, it could be 19 and even 20 million people," during his June 27 debate against President Joe Biden. "They're taking Black jobs, and they're taking Hispanic jobs, and you haven't seen it yet, but you're going to see something that's going to be the worst in our history," Trump said. Data does not support Trump's claim that immigrants are "taking" jobs from American workers. With nine Olympic medals, six of them gold, Biles is the most decorated U.S. gymnast in history.

Earth’s electric and magnetic fields and gravity cause charged particles in the ionosphere to flow away from Earth’s magnetic equator. Typically, plasma bubbles are long and straight because they form along Earth’s magnetic field lines. GOLD observations captured C-shaped and reverse C-shaped plasma bubbles close together in the ionosphere on October 12, 2020, and December 26, 2021. So far, GOLD has only observed two instances of the close pairings, but the C-shaped bubbles have the potential to disrupt communications. “Due to such wide view and continuous measurements, GOLD has allowed us to observe these mysteries within the ionosphere,” Karan said.

Olympic officials on Friday tried urgently to rebut what they described as widespread “misinformation” that had turned a 46-second Olympic boxing match at the Paris Games into a forum for fierce debates and complicated questions about biology and competitive advantage in women’s sports. Mr. Adams stressed at a news conference that Khelif is not transgender. “There has been some confusion that somehow it’s a man fighting a woman,” Mr. Adams said. “The answer is yes,” according to their eligibility, passport and history. Khelif won her opening bout on Thursday when her Italian opponent, Angela Carini, refused to continue, and after she was cleared to compete in the Olympics despite being suddenly disqualified during last year’s world championships in a dispute about her eligibility.

The convicted assassin who was the linchpin of the biggest prisoner swap in decades is a member of the most powerful security agency in Russia, the Kremlin acknowledged on Friday, and had served in a special unit with some agents who now guard President Vladimir V. Putin. The ties help explain Mr. Putin’s determination to free the assassin, Vadim Krasikov, from the German prison where he was serving time for murder. The effort culminated on Thursday when Mr. Krasikov and seven other former prisoners returned to Moscow after an exchange with Western nations that involved 24 adults and seven countries. Mr. Putin has not hid his admiration for Mr. Krasikov, who had been jailed in Germany since 2019 for the murder of a Chechen former separatist fighter in Berlin. In an interview in February, Mr. Putin referred to Mr. Krasikov as “a patriot” who was doing his duty by eliminating an enemy of the Russian state.

Eleven years ago, in 2013, Holder said that Mohammed and his associates would have been “on death row as we speak” had the case gone to federal court as he proposed. But he blamed Congress for blocking a federal trial that would have resulted in swifter justice. They were dealt a bad hand by the political hacks and those who lost faith in our justice system,” Holder said in a statement to NBC News on Thursday. “If my decision to try KSM and his confederates in the tested and effective federal court system had been followed they would be nothing more than a memory today,” Holder said. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said he’s “long advocated that our federal court system is perfectly capable of conducting this kind of trial” and was well-suited to handling serious crimes.

A turning point came on June 25, when a group of C.I.A. officers sat across from their Russian counterparts during a secret meeting in a Middle Eastern capital. Quiet negotiations between the United States and Russia over a possible prisoner swap had dragged on for more than a year. They were punctuated by only occasional glimpses of hope for the families of the American prisoners — including Evan Gershkovich, a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, and Paul Whelan, an American security contractor — growing increasingly impatient for their ordeal to end. But the June meeting changed things, according to accounts from American and Western officials and other people familiar with the long process of bringing the deal to fruition.
