SummaryCompanies Q2 profits slump 56% at Shell, 49% at TotalEnergies y/yOil, gas, LNG prices much lower in 2023 vs 2022TotalEnergies sees LNG prices recover somewhat in winterShell slows pace of share buyback programmeLONDON/PARIS, July 27 (Reuters) - Shell (SHEL.L) and TotalEnergies (TTEF.PA) reported sharp falls in second-quarter profit from bumper 2022 earnings as oil and gas prices, refining margins and trading results all weakened. Oil and gas prices soared last year in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine but energy prices have dropped sharply this year as fears of shortages eased amid global economic challenges. Reuters GraphicsShell's shares were down 1.9% at 0755 GMT and TotalEnergies' slipped 0.4%, compared with a 1% decline in the European index of oil and gas companies (.SXEP). Prices for liquefied natural gas (LNG), a key product for both groups, dropped to $11.75 per million British thermal units (mmBtu) from around $33. Both Shell and TotalEnergies had flagged shrinking profit from refining crude oil into fuel and chemicals in the quarter.

Companies TotalEnergies SE FollowPARIS, July 27 (Reuters) - French oil company TotalEnergies (TTEF.PA) posted a drop in second-quarter net income on Thursday, reflecting lower natural gas prices and slimmer refining margins in Europe as energy markets calm. Adjusted net income fell to $5 billion compared with $6.5 billion in the first quarter, and $9.8 billion during the same period last year. Analysts had expected $5.2 billion in net income, according to a consensus established by Eikon Refinitiv. Total confirmed some $2 billion in share buybacks for the third quarter as expected. The company said European refining was impacted by higher Chinese exports and a quicker-than-expected reorganisation of Russian exports following an embargo on oil and oil products imposed by the European Union.

However, many consumers — and even business leaders — are still confused about what the metaverse actually is and how it will work. No matter what you call it — the metaverse, spatial computing, the 3D web – when the metaverse is broken down into its component parts, more realistic applications emerge. "We call it Metaverse Technologies for a reason." PwCIt's not just retail; events that have traditionally relied on in-person participation are also embracing a combination of metaverse technologies. The Venice Carnival is just one example of how metaverse technologies can create new ways for people to connect, learn, and experience the world.

The auditorium lights dimmed, and the cast and crew of Cincinnati Opera’s new production of Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly” anxiously took their places. For months, the team, made up largely of Asian and Asian American artists, had worked to reimagine the classic opera, upending its stereotypes about women and Japanese culture. They gathered at the Cincinnati Music Hall one evening last week to fine-tune their creation before its opening last Saturday. “It feels a little like a grand experiment,” said the production’s director, Matthew Ozawa, whose father is Japanese and mother is white. The opera has long been criticized for its portrait of Asian women as exotic and submissive, and the use of exaggerated makeup and stereotypical costumes in some productions has drawn fire.

The jury ruled in favor of Emory Hernandez Valadez, who filed suit last year in California state court in Oakland against J&J, seeking monetary damages. The six-week trial was the first over talc that New Brunswick, New Jersey-based J&J has faced in almost two years. Hernandez will not be able to collect the judgment in the foreseeable future, thanks to a bankruptcy court order freezing most litigation over J&J's talc. Jurors heard from Hernandez's mother, Anna Camacho, who said she used large amounts of J&J's baby powder on her son when he was a baby and through childhood. Tens of thousands of plaintiffs have sued, alleging that J&J's baby powder and other talc products sometimes contained asbestos and caused ovarian cancer and mesothelioma.

J&J has consistently denied that its now-discontinued talc baby powder contains asbestos or causes cancer. Satterley asked jurors to award Hernandez punitive damages about nine times greater than so-called compensatory damages, which include $3.8 million for his medical costs as well as damages for pain and suffering. The U.S. Supreme Court has found that punitive damages should generally be no more than nine times compensatory damages, and that a higher ratio can be reduced on appeal as excessive. J&J has said its talc products are safe and do not contain asbestos, which has been linked to mesothelioma. The length of the mission's stay in Honduras to meet with various sectors was not specified. The CICIH would be the second anti-corruption commission to operate in Honduras.
