☆ Columbia Said It Would Expel Students Occupying a Building

Early this morning, dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters stormed into an academic building on Columbia University’s campus and used furniture to barricade themselves inside. This afternoon, university officials announced that students involved in the building’s occupation would face expulsion. Columbia closed the entire Manhattan campus to everyone except students who live in dorms there and employees who provide essential services. Officials at Portland State University closed the campus after students broke into its library, and police officers made new arrests at universities in Virginia, North Carolina and elsewhere. Police officers managed to end the eight-day occupation of an administration building at California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt.

College Democrats of America, the student organization of the Democratic Party, endorsed pro-Palestinian campus protests on Tuesday and called on President Biden to support a permanent cease-fire in Gaza. Overnight from Monday into Tuesday, protesters at Columbia took over a building on campus. “As College Democrats, we are committed to the re-election of President Biden and Democrats across down-ballot races in every corner of our nation,” the statement said. “We’re realizing that our duty as College Democrats is to be representatives of college students to the party, rather than vice versa,” Mr. Muralitharan said. And throughout the nation, we’re witnessing Joe Biden, Democrats across the ballot, losing scores of young voters over this issue.”The statement was written largely by the organization’s Muslim Caucus.

These attacks have over the years undermined university leadership and provoked students, staff and faculty. University leaders responded positively, helping to build more dynamic and well-endowed centers for this work than on any other peer campus in the country. Many students, staff and faculty, especially those from minority backgrounds, feel that they have suffered setback after setback at the hands of hostile politicians and deferential administrators. Public and private university leaders have become more distant from their own campuses as they focus on fund-raising and testifying before hostile federal and state legislatures. CNN —Last week, I sat in Yale University’s Beinecke Plaza leading around 50 classmates in nigunim — wordless melodies from the Jewish Hasidic tradition — and other Jewish songs and prayers. As a fourth-year Yale student, I find this characterization to be deeply frustrating, as it could not be further from the truth. Indeed, Yale Jews for Ceasefire exists because of — not in spite of — our Jewish values. Our present moment is a precarious one for the Jewish people, fraught with disagreement about what our Jewish values mean to us. At Yale, organizers of all faiths continue to build a community that is dedicated to moving forward in collaboration with, not opposition to, Jewish students.

Barnard College will allow most of the 53 students who were arrested and suspended after participating in a pro-Palestinian protest encampment at Columbia University to return to its campus, administrators said in a statement on Friday. The college said that it had “reached resolution with nearly all students” who were arrested last week when Columbia asked the police to clear the encampment, a move that set off dozens of solidarity protests at campuses across the country and dozens of additional arrests at schools including Yale University, the University of Southern California and Emerson College. Of the arrested students at Columbia’s original encampment, about half were from Barnard, a women’s college affiliated with the university that is across the street in Upper Manhattan. Barnard said suspended students who reached agreements with the college on Friday would have their access to residence halls, dining facilities and classrooms immediately restored. Barnard was still working on agreements with some other students, it said.

I was accepted into Duke, Columbia, and Yale, so I had to choose which one was right for me. Serious deliberation removed Columbia; it took a coin flip and following my gut to make up my mind. Being from a somewhat well-off family, I received substantial aid from Yale, Duke, and Columbia, but none offered me a full ride. Trust me, the coin flip worksI know it sounds stupid, but a coin flip is the best method for figuring out what school to go with if you've done everything you could but can't decide. You shouldn't follow through on what the coin flip says, but you should act like you will.

This widespread inability to recognize what money is really worth is known as money illusion. Irving Fisher, a Yale economist, wrote a book about it nearly a century ago. Brown on Wednesday became the latest university to threaten students with punishment if they did not leave a pro-Palestinian encampment set up on campus. The school said that 90 students would face “conduct proceedings” if they did not clear out. The warning followed arrests of demonstrators this week at other universities across the country, including Yale, New York University, Ohio State and the University of Minnesota. Encampments have cropped up nationwide since the arrest of more than 100 pro-Palestinian demonstrators at Columbia University last week, with many students demanding that their schools end financial ties to Israel and weapons manufacturers. Nunes, himself a former Republican congressman from California, pointed to how Trump Media has been among the most expensive stocks to borrow. Nunes suggested there are signs of “naked” short selling, which involves someone selling shares they don’t own or have not borrowed. Nine people were arrested Tuesday morning at the University of Minnesota’s Twin Cities campus after they formed an encampment that went against school policy, the university told CNN in a statement. The university's Department of Public Safety received reports Tuesday morning of an encampment near the Northrop Mall on the Twin Cities campus, the statement said. Police arrived around 6 am local time and told those at the encampment "they were in violation of both University policy and state trespassing law," they said. Police asked the group to disperse by 7 am and told they would be arrested if they stayed. The university said in its statement it "supports and respects free speech through lawful protest" and "supports the rights of all members of our University community to speak and demonstrate peacefully."
