Last spring, it seemed Tucker Carlson might have reached the end of his fiery path through American media and politics. Fox News canceled his top-rated show, depriving Mr. Carlson of his nightly platform in prime time. Under the old rules of the legacy media, Mr. Carlson would have been off the air and out of sight through the end of the 2024 election, when his contract runs out. But Mr. Carlson is no typical television star. In landing an exclusive interview with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia — released on Thursday on the social network X and Mr. Carlson’s own streaming site, Tucker Carlson Network — the host returned with a vengeance to the center of American politics.

Russian President Vladimir Putin used an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson to urge Washington to recognize Moscow's interests and persuade Ukraine to sit down for talks. Most of the interview, released Thursday, focused on Ukraine, where the war is nearing the two-year mark. It was Putin’s first interview with a Western media figure since his full-scale invasion of Ukraine two years ago. Two journalists working for U.S. news organizations — The Wall Street Journal’s Gershkovich and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s Alsu Kurmasheva — are in jail. Asked by Carlson whether Russia would release Gershkovich, Putin said Moscow is open to talks but repeated that the reporter was charged with espionage, an accusation Gershkovich has denied.

CNN —It’s evident now why Vladimir Putin granted an interview to Tucker Carlson. At times, between the airing of grievances, Putin appeared to school Carlson on historical events as the host looked on in bewilderment. It was a massive propaganda victory for Putin, who can — and will – now twist the encounter for his own ends. “VLADIMIR PUTIN’S INTERVIEW GAINS OVER 20 MILLION VIEWERS IN FIRST TWO HOURS,” RT boasted in one on-screen graphic. At the end of the interview, Carlson asked Putin if he would be “willing to release” Evan Gershkovich, the imprisoned reporter for The Wall Street Journal.

AdvertisementAs Tucker Carlson was hyping his interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin, US support for Ukraine hit a new low. AdvertisementIn Carlson Putin has found an interviewer likely to be receptive to his views. Even the Kremlin said he was wrong to claim that no other Western journalist had even tried to interview Putin. Carlson's skepticism about Ukraine aid has also been championed by former President and GOP 2024 frontrunner Donald Trump and his supporters in Congress. With the GOP holding the fate of future Ukraine aid, Carlson is handing Putin an opportunity to address the party's supporters directly on Thursday.

The idea was to isolate him, to make him a pariah, to put him in a box as punishment for brazen violations of international law. They kicked him out of their world leaders’ clubhouse, cut off his country’s economy, even issued an arrest warrant against him for war crimes. Mr. Putin, the Russian president with czar envy who invaded neighboring Ukraine without provocation, killing or injuring hundreds of thousands, is having something of a moment in the United States. With the help of a populist former Fox News star and America’s richest man, Mr. Putin is gaining a platform to justify his actions even as Russian and American journalists languish in his prisons. His favored candidate is poised to win the Republican presidential nomination while Congress weighs abandoning Ukraine to the tender mercies of Russian invaders.

Opinion | Why MAGA Loves Russia and Hates Ukraine

As I type this newsletter, continued American aid for Ukraine is in grave doubt. And we’re receiving reports from the front lines that Russia is advancing, in part because of Ukrainian ammunition shortages. Ronald Reagan isn’t just rolling over in his grave; he may also lurch from it in a fit of incredulous rage. To explain the intensity of Republican resistance to Ukraine aid, I need to return to a concept I wrote about in November: that of bespoke realities. But the mass Republican movement against Ukraine is rooted far less in policy than it is in a particular bespoke reality of the MAGA universe, in which Ukraine is a pernicious villain, Putin is a flawed hero and Russia should have crushed Ukraine long ago.

In an interview released on Thursday, Tucker Carlson urged President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia to release an American reporter for The Wall Street Journal who has been held in a notorious Moscow prison for nearly a year. Mr. Carlson’s appeal on behalf of the reporter, Evan Gershkovich, was only the second time that Mr. Putin directly addressed a case that has galvanized press freedom groups and strained diplomatic relations with the United States. Large portions of the two-hour interview were taken up by Mr. Putin’s recounting hundreds of years of Russian history. But in the final minutes, Mr. Carlson asked, “as a sign of your decency,” if he “would be willing to release him to us and we’ll bring him back to the United States.” Mr. Carlson added: “This guy’s obviously not a spy. “We have done so many gestures of good will out of decency that I think we have run out of them,” he said, according to a translation of his remarks by Mr. Carlson’s team.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been interviewed by former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, the Kremlin confirmed Wednesday. Carlson on Tuesday released a video from Moscow in which he said he would be interviewing the Russian president. Carlson claimed that Western journalists had interviewed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy multiple times but could not be “bothered” to interview Putin. Putin has heavily limited his contact with international media since he launched the war in Ukraine in February 2022. Carlson who was fired by Fox News in April, announced he was starting his own streaming service in December.

Carlson is a well-known conservative media figure who is critical of the West for backing Ukraine. Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson on Tuesday teased a forthcoming interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin — the first to be conducted by a Western journalist since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine almost two years ago. In truth, Western media outlets are routinely refused interviews with Putin. The interview will be published on X, Carlson said, as well as on his own media startup. The Kremlin has refused to comment on Carlson's whereabouts or on his interview with Putin.

Tucker Carlson is facing backlash for stating that Western media hasn't tried to interview Putin. AdvertisementIt seems even the Kremlin thinks Tucker Carlson has gone too far in his criticism of Western media. The BBC noted that Carlson later changed his tone as the war progressed, saying: "Vladimir Putin started this war... However, Carlson has called Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a "dictator" who "is friends with everyone in Washington". In response to allegations that he is a pawn of Putin , Carlson told Axios in 2022: "I could care less."

Prosecutors alleged that the Crumbley parents willfully disregarded warning signs that their son was in crisis, did not heed concerns of school administrators, bought him a gun days before the shooting and failed to lock it up. Yet, research shows that even parents who think their guns are inaccessible to minors are mistaken. Distributed responsibilityMost parents want their children to be safe, yet many continue to enable household access to loaded guns. In fact, a recent study shows that states often loosened gun laws after mass shootings, especially states with Republican legislatures. This case opens the door for parents to be held legally accountable, and reminds all parents of their responsibilities when it comes to gun safety.

Russian President Vladimir Putin didn’t even have to wait until the 2024 election and Trump’s possible return to the White House to have cause for celebration. Trump’s congressional toadies quickly fell into line even before they saw the border bill. There’s talk of a separate bill of aid for Ukraine, but Trump’s supporters have echoed his skepticism. For Putin and his regime, no amount of champagne would be enough to do justice to the significance of that win.

Tucker Carlson set to interview Vladimir Putin

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson said he will interview Russian President Vladimir Putin, becoming the first member of the Western media to interview the Russian leader since the country's invasion of Ukraine almost two years ago. "Why is Vladimir Putin such a bad guy? He's not Saddam Hussein, he's not Adolf Hitler, he's not a danger to the United States," Carlson said in 2017. He is a dangerous authoritarian who has used a hundred billion in U.S. tax dollars to erect a one-party police state in Ukraine," Carlson said in 2022. The far-right commentator's interview with Putin will be released on X and the media startup TuckerCarlson.com.

The plot continues to thicken over the presence of U.S. journalist Tucker Carlson in Moscow, with pro-Kremlin media trying to track his movements around Russia's capital. With speculation rife over Carlson's reasons for being in Russia — there are rumors that he could be in the country to interview President Vladimir Putin — Russian state media reported late Wednesday that the car allegedly being used by the former Fox News host had been spotted leaving the president's office. In other news, a new standoff has emerged at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine. Around 100 of the thousands of Ukrainian staff at the ZNPP are refusing to sign contracts with Russian nuclear company Rosatom, U.N. nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi told a French radio station on Tuesday. Grossi told the French radio station in an interview that he would examine any impact on operations at the plant, where the six reactors are in shutdown, when he visits it on Wednesday.

CNN —Tucker Carlson’s interview with Vladimir Putin hasn’t been posted online yet, but he is already doing the Russian authoritarian’s bidding. In a video posted to X announcing the sit-down Tuesday — the first interview Putin has granted with a Western media figure since his full-scale invasion of Ukraine two years ago — Carlson predictably and dishonestly villainized the press. “Does Tucker really think we journalists haven’t been trying to interview President Putin every day since his full scale invasion of Ukraine?” CNN’s Christiane Amanpour rhetorically remarked upon seeing Carlson’s claim. Which is to say, don’t hold your breath if you think Carlson will bring the heat to Putin. “Bear in mind that Putin wants to stir and widen divisions within the United States as much as possible.”That may just be a goal both Putin and Carlson share.

CNN —A medical examiner on Tuesday released the manner of death for a baby whose mother accused a Georgia hospital and others of decapitating during delivery, ruling it a homicide. The Clayton County, Georgia Medical Examiner’s office said the baby died from a broken neck and the baby’s head was detached, according to a news release shared with CNN. Ross went into labor on July 9 and her doctor attempted to deliver the baby using various methods, including “applying traction to the baby’s head,” the lawsuit says. Tucker Carlson, the former Fox News host, has interviewed President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, the Kremlin said on Wednesday, a sign that the Russian leader is seeking to make a direct appeal to American conservatives as U.S. aid to Ukraine hangs in the balance. Dmitri S. Peskov, the Kremlin’s spokesman, said Mr. Carlson had conducted the interview on Tuesday. Mr. Carlson has been in Moscow for several days, according to Russian state media, which has delivered a blow-by-blow account of his visit, raising anticipation of a potential interview by Mr. Carlson of Mr. Putin. On Tuesday night, he revealed that he was interviewing the Russian leader. “We’re here to interview the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin,” Mr. Carlson said in a video apparently shot from a high-rise building in central Moscow and posted to the social media network X.

Tucker Carlson Says He Will Interview Russia’s Putin Soon

(Reuters) - U.S. media personality Tucker Carlson said on Tuesday he would "soon" interview Russian President Vladimir Putin. Carlson, in a post from Moscow on X, formerly Twitter, gave no further details on when the interview would take place. He said the point of the interview was to enable Americans to know "as much as you can" on Russia's view of the nearly two-year-old conflict with Ukraine.

If so, Mr. Carlson would be the first American media figure to land a formal interview with the Russian leader since he invaded Ukraine nearly two years ago. Mr. Putin’s spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, has indicated that Mr. Putin was denying requests from Western new outlets because their countries had been “stupefied” by anti-Russian propaganda. But Mr. Carlson has been a defender of Mr. Putin while attacking his Western critics, placing him at the vanguard of a pro-Putin wing of the American conservative movement. In a call with reporters on Monday, Mr. Peskov said: “Many foreign journalists come to the Russian Federation every day. Many continue to work here, and we welcome this.” He added, “As for possible interviews with the president, including with foreign media, we have nothing to report at the moment.”

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The Kremlin on Monday declined to say whether or not Russian President Vladimir Putin would grant an interview to U.S. journalist Tucker Carlson - or whether he was in Moscow. "We can hardly be expected to provide information on the movement of foreign journalists," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said when asked about speculation that Carlson was in Russia to interview Putin. "Many foreign journalists come to Russia every day, many continue to work here, and we welcome this," Peskov said. Carlson is a former Fox News host who launched a new subscription-based streaming video service in December to capitalize on his popularity among conservative voters. The Mash Telegram channel on Saturday published a picture of Carlson and said he had arrived in Moscow.
