Japan braces for Typhoon Khanun's winds and heavy rainfall

REUTERS/Maxim Shemetov/File PhotoTOKYO, Aug 7 (Reuters) - A swath of Japanese regions, including central areas, are bracing for Typhoon Khanun to approach near southwestern Japan on Tuesday, as the country's meteorological agency warns of damage from strong winds and heavy rainfall. The storm was hovering about 160 kilometres (99 miles) east-northeast of the city of Amami in southwestern Japan and moving slowly north as of 9 a.m. local time (0000 GMT), the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said. Khanun has gradually lost its strength but still packs winds of 108 kph (67 mph), with gusts of up to 144 kph. "Due to the slow movement of the typhoon and its prolonged impact, total rainfall may greatly exceed the normal monthly rainfall for August in the Pacific Ocean side of Kyushu and western Japan, and in the Tokai region," the JMA said.

CNN —A total of 98 people have been arrested in connection with child sex abuse, and 13 children rescued from harm, US and Australian authorities said Tuesday, more than two years after two FBI agents were killed investigating an alleged international pedophile ring. Two FBI agents investigating the alleged ring were shot dead in 2021 while executing a search warrant for a computer programmer suspected of possession of child abuse material, CNN previously reported. The alleged child abuse ring was a “peer to peer network” with “some offenders committing offenses for over 10 years,” said Australian Federal Police Commander Helen Schneider. Australian investigationThe Australian police investigation began in 2022 when the FBI passed on details of Australian members of a peer-to-peer network allegedly sharing child abuse material on the dark web. “The complexity and anonymity of these platforms means that no agency or country can fight these threats alone.”Most of the Australian alleged offenders had jobs that required advanced IT skills, police said in a statement.

REUTERS/Henry Nicholls/File PhotoLONDON, July 31 (Reuters) - Britain's banks and building societies have until the end of August to justify to regulators why some of their savings rates are low or face sanctions, the markets watchdog said on Monday, as Bank of England rates look set to rise to their highest since 2008. Smaller lenders offer higher savings rates than their bigger rivals, the FCA added. "Firms offering the lowest savings rates will be required to justify by the end of August how those rates offer fair value, according to the consumer duty that enters into force today," the FCA said in a statement. Banks and building societies offering the lowest rates have to complete a "fair value" assessment for the regulator by the end of August. The FCA will also review the timing of changes to savings rates each time BoE rates move, publish an analysis every six months of easy-access rates, analyse how savings products contribute to profitability and, by the end of March 2024, review how firms engage with customers.

NEW DELHI, July 21 (Reuters) - Tiger Global, Peak XV and Steadview Capital are among 30 foreign and domestic investors asking Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to review a 28% gaming tax, saying the levy would adversely impact $4 billion in prospective investments, a letter showed. India last week announced the tax on the funds that online gaming companies collect from their customers. Games such as fantasy cricket have become increasingly popular in recent years, but have also raised concerns about addiction among players. Tiger Global and Peak XV, previously known as Sequoia Capital India, have invested in Indian gaming companies such as Dream11 and Mobile Premier League. Over 100 gaming firms wrote a letter recently to the finance ministry with a similar request, saying the tax will stifle foreign investment and put $2.5 billion already invested in the sector at risk.

15-Year vs. 30-Year Mortgage: How Do You Choose?

15-year mortgage rates vs. 30-year mortgage ratesHowever, mortgage rates vary by term length, too. Pros and cons of a 15-year mortgageA 15-year mortgage has some perks. “A 15-year mortgage would be ill-advised if a customer is tight on their budget,” says Chuck Meier, mortgage director at Sunrise Banks. “You can make the 15-year payment on a monthly basis, receiving the benefits of a 15-year mortgage,” Lindner says. “If the higher payment becomes a challenge, you can revert to the lower 30-year mortgage payment.”

The Massalit and other non-Arab communities are often targeted by Arab militias, supported by the RSF, the report said. “Many of these abuses committed in the context of the armed conflict in Sudan amount to war crimes,” HRW’s report said. Satellite imagery and fire detection data shows that six other towns and villages in West Darfur, including Molle, Murnei, and Gokor, were also burned down, according to the report. Since then, West Darfur has seen widespread violence and reports of atrocities committed by RSF fighters and their allied militias. “Since the conflict in Sudan broke out in April, some of the worst atrocities have been in West Darfur,” HRW senior crisis and conflict researcher Jean-Baptiste Gallopin said.

Wolfgang Kaehler | Lightrocket | Getty ImagesIndia is poised to become the world's second-largest economy by 2075, leapfrogging not just Japan and Germany, but the U.S. too, says Goldman Sachs. "Over the next two decades, the dependency ratio of India will be one of the lowest among regional economies," said Goldman Sachs Research's India economist, Santanu Sengupta. Sengupta added that the key to drawing out the potential of India's rapidly growing population is to boost the participation of its labor force. The Achilles heel to the bank's projection is the labor force participation rate — and whether it increases at the rate which Goldman projects. "The labor force participation rate in India has declined over the last 15 years," the report noted, underlining that women's participation rate in the labor force is "significantly lower" than men's.

It's only fitting then that OpenAI should have a headquarters befitting its status as the vanguard of new AI revolution. But the company has kept details about its San Francisco headquarters a closely guarded secret. A reporter for Insider was even less successful, turned away by a security guard on an intercom who refused even to confirm or deny the existence of an OpenAI office at the location. But we may now have some hints about what it's like inside the offices of the world's most famous AI company, thanks to architectural plans and planning documents viewed by Insider. My family of 5 stayed in two family rooms on the Amtrak Auto Train from Florida to Virginia. Our family rooms felt spacious — they were the width of the train with large picture windows on both sides. We didn't have private showers, sinks, or toilets in the rooms, but there were communal bathrooms nearby in our train car. Our $3,100 train trip was more expensive than what we'd have spent on gas, hotels, and food during a road trip from Florida to Virginia. Next time, we'll book one family cabin and an adjacent roomette, a move that would've saved us about $630.

Sleep Better at Every Age
  + stars: | 2023-07-07 | by ( Dani Blum | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +47 min
Sleep training, the process of teaching babies how to soothe themselves at night and sleep independently, can start when infants are 3 to 4 months old. While sleep training can be taxing for everyone involved, it can lead to better sleep for the whole household. If your child is struggling to sleep through the night at this age, consider talking to a pediatrician about possible solutions. The problem: Insomnia can strike at any age: Around 20 percent of children have difficulty falling or staying asleep. Plus, the older we get, the harder it is to bounce back from a night of poor sleep, Dr. Roth said.

Archaeologists recently found straight lines of 25 pits dating to around 8,000 years ago. The Mesolithic pits contain animal bones, including those of an extinct species of cattle. The pits are arranged in straight lines, and a few contain animal bones with marks suggesting people ate them. The arrangement of the pits appears intentional, dug in several straight lines covering an area of up to about 1,600 feet. The researchers at MOLA plan to investigate whether the Bedfordshire pits' arrangement coincides with the solstice or other celestial events.
