“You Hurt My Feelings” sums up the Nicole Holofcener experience: funny in its wounded bluntness. Her characters — comfortable New Yorkers and Angelenos — tend to lash out; their preferred approach to honesty is brazenness. But Holofcener is drawn more to the process of healing than she is to the wielding of hurt. By that point the movie’s already shown us what Beth’s and Don’s lives are like, together and apart. One thing that’s probably kept the marriage firm has been saying “I love this” and “it’s great,” when it’s not.

This is the same Nina Gold who’s made a successful career casting some of the defining films and TV shows of this century. “I still don’t really understand what it is that makes acting good,” she says. For “Bad Sisters’” smarmy, abusive antagonist John Paul, Gold cast Claes Bang. For Gold and her team – rising to six people, depending on projects – it’s a lot of logistics and audition tapes. Gold cast Taylor-Johnson in his breakout role as John Lennon in “Nowhere Boy” (2009) at age 18-20, she guesses, but had been auditioning him since about the age of nine.

Unfolding over one fraught night, “Sanctuary” dances on the border between fantasy and reality. He’s about to find out, though, that this employee will not be pensioned off so easily. If she’s to succeed, she’ll need more than a talent for debasement and humiliation. Sexual but not sexy, “Sanctuary” is fantastically dynamic and emphatically theatrical. The ending feels too smoothly settled, but it at least prods Hal and Rebecca to answer the film’s central question: Where does role-playing end and real life begin?
