More than 15 billion political texts were sent in 2022 according to call-blocking service Robokiller — about 50 messages for every phone in the country. Political texts spiked last fall during the run-up to November’s midterm election. Republican campaigns and groups sent the bulk of political texts sent in 2022, Robokiller’s data shows. Even if they don’t recall consenting to political texts, voters have limited options for revoking it. Political texts are not subject to the federal Do Not Call registry, which allows consumers to opt out of telemarketing calls and text messages.
Not Lands’ End. As it looks to grow its customer base, Lands’ End is bucking the trend by purposely embracing the “forgotten generation,” Gen Xers. “It didn’t fly with our customers.”In a rush to grab the attention of younger consumers, the retailer stumbled and made fashion missteps. But the company says it knows who its core customers are. They’re Gen Xers,” he said, adding that Gen X shoppers showed the same long-term loyalty to the brand as Baby Boomers.
"This was my road to Damascus experience, a turning point in my understanding of the role of talent density in organizations," Hastings wrote. Hastings credits the company's culture of internal transparency and innovation, which endows top-performers with unusual autonomy, for Netflix's success. "This is a big psychological change for Netflix," said Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData. "There's no big strategy shifts or big culture shifts," he said in a post-earnings video interview with an analyst. They'll also need to find new sources of revenue, including in video games -- where Netflix will confront established rivals.

PepsiCo is replacing Sierra Mist with Starry, a new lemon-lime soda. Starry has a "more balanced, cleaner, crisp finish than Sierra Mist," a spokesperson told Insider. The beverage serves as a fresh opportunity to compete with market leader Sprite. PepsiCo said Starry will soon debut a national television campaign and appear at major sports and entertainment events as well. But whether Starry's flavor packs enough punch to compete with Sprite, only time will tell.

New York CNN —Subway, one of the world’s most recognizable fast food brands, might be up for a sale, according to the Wall Street Journal. The privately held company has obtained advisers to explore sale that could value Subway at more than $10 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported. In a statement provided to CNN, Subway said that it doesn’t “comment on ownership structure and business plans” because it’s private. Subway is still in the early stages of throwing up the “for sale” sign and it might not find an acceptable deal, the Journal reported. Subway attributed its recent success to its new “Subway Series” menu, which was streamlined to help speed up service, and an increase in digital orders.

New York CNN —Pepsi is reaching for the stars in its latest effort to take on Sprite. It’s replacing Sierra Mist, a 24-year-old brand that has failed to gain traction against market leader Sprite, which is owned by main rival Coca-Cola (KO). A Pepsi spokesperson told CNN that Starry has a “higher citrus flavors that are true to fruit and more aromatic” compared to Sierra Mist. Courtesy StarrySierra Mist launched in 1999 to much fanfare, however it never made much of a dent in Sprite’s dominance. Sprite, meanwhile, has grown its share of the soda market over the same time period to nearly 8%.
Abercrombie & Fitch is cool again

New York CNN Business —Abercrombie & Fitch has shed its perfume-filled mall stores, shirtless models and logo sweatshirts to win over Millennials and Gen Z.It’s working. Abercrombie (ANF) said Monday that its women’s segment was on track to deliver its highest holiday sales period ever, and its men’s division was growing, too. “Abercrombie was a key destination for holiday shopping,” Neil Saunders, an analyst at GlobalData Retail, said in a note to clients Monday. “This a further sign that the brand has successfully ditched the baggage of its past.”The brand, which has about 225 stores, plans to open around 10 Abercrombie stores a year over the next three years. Today, Abercrombie’s stores are lighter than they once were and its clothes are looser.
Jan 9 (Reuters) - Abercrombie & Fitch Co (ANF.N) and American Eagle Outfitters Inc (AEO.N) issued upbeat holiday-quarter sales forecasts on Monday as consumers snapped up their winter wear during the peak shopping season. Shares of Abercrombie, which owns the Hollister label, jumped more than 9%, while American Eagle climbed about 3%. It projected fourth-quarter operating margin between 6% and 8%, up from a range of 5% to 7% estimated previously. American Eagle also said its fourth-quarter revenue and profit margins were tracking at the high end of its forecasts, benefiting from its decision to right-size inventory and a better-than-expected performance at its American Eagle label. Last week, department store chain Macy's Inc (M.N) projected holiday-quarter sales toward the lower end of its previous forecast.
And there are three big “ifs” that will determine the health of the economy: The strength of the labor market, the American consumer and the Federal Reserve. Will the labor market cool off? This is all happening as the Fed tries to actively cool the labor market. Policymakers fear that persistent wage growth in a tight labor market will keep already sky-high inflation levels elevated. Mortgage rates continue to soarMortgage rates rose again last week, beginning 2023 twice as high as they were a year ago.
Jan 5 (Reuters) - Bed Bath & Beyond Inc (BBBY.O) on Thursday said it was exploring options including a bankruptcy filing to address the U.S. home goods retailer's plunging sales, dwindling cash and debt load, sending its shares tumbling. Bed Bath & Beyond said it expects to report a third-quarter loss of $385.5 million after sales plunged 33%. The stock was one of the most active on the Nasdaq, with nearly 9.4 million shares traded as of 09:37 ET. Bed Bath & Beyond may file for bankruptcy, according to a company SEC filing Thursday. Bed Bath & Beyond reported an expected loss of $385.8 million the previous quarter. If Bed Bath & Beyond files for bankruptcy, the company could go out of business — meaning employees would lose their jobs and the company would have to liquidate its assets. "In our view, Bed Bath & Beyond is too far gone to be saved in its present form," Saunders wrote.

A survey of 30 economists and analysts forecast Brent crude would average $89.37 a barrel in 2023, about 4.6% lower than the $93.65 consensus in a November survey. U.S. crude is projected to average $84.84 per barrel in 2023, versus the previous month's $87.80 consensus. Brent has fallen more than 15% since early November and was trading around $84 a barrel on Friday as surging COVID-19 cases in China depressed the outlook for oil demand growth in the world's largest crude oil importer. The impact of Western sanctions on Russian oil is expected to minimal, the poll showed. Moscow this week signed a decree that bans the supply of oil and oil products to nations participating in the Group of Seven (G7) price cap from Feb. 1 for five months.
Brexit has cracked Britain’s economic foundations

Brexit has erected trade barriers for UK businesses and foreign companies that used Britain as a European base. While Brexit isn’t the cause of Britain’s cost-of-living crisis, it has made the problem more difficult to solve. The Brexit deal, known as the Trade and Cooperation Agreement, came into effect on January 1, 2021. The deal is “the world’s largest zero tariff, zero quota free trade deal,” the spokesperson added. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development expects the UK economy to shrink by 0.4%, ahead only of sanctioned Russia.
The Internal Revenue Services postponed the reporting requirement after efforts in Congress failed to delay it or raise the $600 threshold. The Internal Revenue Service on Friday gave millions of Americans a one-year reprieve on new tax-reporting requirements, delaying implementation of a law that requires e-commerce platforms such as eBay , Etsy and Airbnb to give the tax agency information on users with more than $600 in revenue. The delay means the platforms won’t have to send sellers and the IRS a blizzard of 1099-K tax forms early in 2023, and it gives opponents of the $600 threshold more time to push for a change in the law next year.
Donald Trump made loans to his children Ivanka, Donald and Eric that the Internal Revenue Service should scrutinize, according to a recommendation by the staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation to House Ways & Means Committee Chair Richard Neal (D., Mass.). The suggestion was part of the staff’s analysis of Mr. Trump’s tax returns for 2015-2020. According to the report, Mr. Trump declared a total of $51,000 of interest paid to him by his three older children for each tax year from 2015 through 2019. For 2020, the amount of interest dropped to $46,000. The report questioned whether these related-party loans, as they are known, were “bona fide arms-length transactions” or were disguised gifts that should be taxable to Mr. Trump.
The Philadelphia school district announced Wednesday that students and staff will be required to wear masks indoors for two weeks in January in an effort to slow transmission after the holidays. The New York City Department of Education issued a letter this week strongly encouraging students and staff to wear a well-fitting mask indoors. After three years of Covid, however, experts recognized that few people are inclined to wear masks as often as they had previously while in public spaces. But Luby said he still wears a mask in public, even when others around him do not. “I find myself in that situation a lot — I’m the only person in the room wearing a mask," he said.
Energy prices are pulling back because of fears of a global recession, and the price to ship a container across the ocean has plummeted. In the United States, consumer prices rose at an annual rate of 7.1% in November, the smallest increase since December 2021. Prices rose by 10.7% in the United Kingdom last month, down from 11.1% in October, according to data published Wednesday. But even if this bout of inflation has peaked, economists are warning the world may not return to simpler days when prices barely rose at all. At least for now, supply of critical minerals can’t keep up, which could force prices higher at times.
In this brutal year for markets, some mutual-fund investors are facing a double whammy: big losses and big tax bills. This is happening because fund managers have had to sell holdings to raise cash to pay investors leaving their funds. That often triggers payouts of taxable capital gains for investors who remain.
An experimental treatment for advanced melanoma is poised to be the next major advance in cancer treatment, experts say. Those who got TIL therapy had a 50% reduction in disease progression and death, compared to those who were treated with ipilimumab, the study found. Bruce Hawley and his wife, Laurie, celebrated their third wedding anniversary in 2021 in Vancouver, several years after his TIL therapy. "The chemotherapy knocks down the immune cells to make space for the TIL cells going in," Hwu said. The hope is that TIL therapy will also be used for other solid cancers, not just melanoma, Rosenberg said.
