I’m sorry, you were expecting the quiet drama of a seasonal floral arrangement? Maybe some muted tablecloths and tapered candles? These are extravagant, excessive and technically precise set pieces that some contestants will spend all year designing and crafting. “People think it’s trivial,” said Ava Tramer, a film and television writer who started competing in 2018. “But I take the idea of getting everything right and respecting the sport very seriously.”

The S & P 500's rise to fresh heights in the new year will not be in a straight line, according to RBC Capital Markets. Strategist Lori Calvasina issued a year-end 2025 target for the broad market index of 6,600. The S & P 500 has rallied 3.2% since Donald Trump secured a second presidential term, raising expectations of lower taxes and deregulation. To be sure, Calvasina thinks there will be 5%-10% correction in the near term before equities resume their march to all-time highs. Last week, Goldman Sachs set a 6,500 target for the S & P 500, while BMO issued a forecast for the benchmark index to surge all the way to 6,700 .

UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell speaks in the early hours at the conclusion of the UNFCCC COP29 Climate Conference on November 24, 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Ambitious climate action often requires ambitious financing — be it a clean energy transition project or helping developing countries mitigate the effects of natural disasters. Nearly 50,000 people from 200 countries — including, for the first time, the Taliban rulers of Afghanistan — were in Azerbaijan for this year's United Nations Climate Change Conference, with the goal of reaching a critical deal on climate finance. Some of the highest human costs will be paid by smaller nations that are disproportionately affected by climate change, including Pacific Island nations whose existence is threatened by rising seas. But with COP29 weighed down by geopolitics and domestic turmoil, some were reluctant to attend at all.

CNN —Even before special counsel Jack Smith formally asked that his criminal cases against Donald Trump be dismissed, it was already guaranteed the president-elect would never see a jury. “I would fire him within two seconds.”In the end, though, Trump didn’t need to sack the special counsel to kill the two cases. Attorney General Merrick Garland is expected to publicly release it, as he has with past special counsel reports. What to do next in the case will be a question for the incoming Trump Justice Department. But a new chapter has already opened for several members of the Trump legal team who have already been rewarded with plum positions in his incoming administration.

There's one key reason the U.S. stock market rallied after this month's presidential election, and it wasn't necessarily because of the outcome, according to Dan Clifton of Strategas. "What we saw was that the market was pricing in a 50-50 election. [Investors] didn't know who was going to win," Clifton, the firm's head of Washington policy research, told CNBC's Dominic Chu in this special Pro Talks discussion available to all readers. Instead, "we had it very clear … we knew [President-elect Donald Trump] was going to win," he said. (Pro subscribers can watch the full interview here .)

Every so often, Kendrick Lamar steps into the present. That’s part of what made his feud with Drake, which began in March and stretched through the spring and summer, so bracing. It was Lamar using Drake’s typical weapons against him — an acknowledgment that even if Lamar prefers not to pay attention to prevailing winds, he can ride them if need be. From a distance, “GNX,” his sixth album, which was released with no announcement on Friday, has some of that same immediacy. On the two opening tracks, “Wacced Out Murals” and “Squabble Up,” Lamar is rapping with the seething indignation he weaponized so effectively during the beef: “I’ll kill ’em all before I let ’em kill my joy”; “Before I take a truce, I’ll take him to hell with me.”

A man walks past the People's Bank of China (PBOC) building on July 20, 2023 in Beijing, China. The People's Bank of China kept the medium-term lending facility rate unchanged at 2.0% on 900 billion yuan ($124.26 billion) worth of one-year loans to some financial institutions, according to the bank's official statement. Keeping the MLF rate intact allows for "greater policy maneuverability" given the change in U.S. administration, at a time when commercial banks' net-interest-margins have remained tight, Pang added. "A delayed reduction in the [MLF] lending rates" would also bolster the yuan against the stronger greenback, JLL's Pang added. Unlike the Fed's focus on a main interest rate, the PBOC uses a variety of rates to manage monetary policy.

The Biden administration is holding up the annual U.S. payment to the World Anti-Doping Agency to press the organization to make changes in the wake of revelations that it chose not to discipline elite Chinese swimmers who tested positive for a banned drug, according to two people briefed on the matter. The White House has told the agency that it needed to have more accountability and transparency and that it must submit to a wide-ranging outside audit of its operations, which have come under intense scrutiny amid revelations that it took no action against China in a number of cases of suspected doping. Led by Dr. Rahul Gupta, the director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, the administration is also pushing for limits on the ability of the agency, known as WADA, to use American taxpayer dollars to sue U.S. institutions, like American antidoping authorities who were the target of a defamation lawsuit by WADA. WADA, which has long tried to avoid outside oversight, is the global body responsible for policing the use of banned, performance-enhancing drugs at events like the Olympics.
