She lived in housing provided by Stanford University with her two small children and her husband, who was pursuing a Ph.D. there. For four years, Ms. Sheinbaum immersed herself in a new life as an immigrant academic in the United States. She landed on the front page of The Stanford Daily student newspaper for protesting the North American Free Trade Agreement. And to people who knew her, she seemed entirely at ease in California, navigating the world of American academia. “They could have been professors, they could have made their lives here,” said Alma González, a close friend of Ms. Sheinbaum’s in California.

Tracking a Single Day at the National Domestic Violence Hotline They call from work, to avoid being overheard, or from home before someone returns. The legal battles have underscored the pervasiveness of domestic violence and the strains on existing support for survivors. To capture a snapshot of the experiences of domestic violence survivors, The New York Times observed some of the calls and messages the hotline received in one day. Congress approved creation of a national hotline dedicated to domestic violence in 1994, including it in the landmark Violence Against Women Act. Josie Slawik, who began working to support domestic violence survivors after she arrived at an El Paso shelter, was there when the hotline took its first call in 1996.

CNN —“I collect barf bags” is not a complete sentence. “I collect barf bags because they’re pretty neat.”“I collect barf bags, and I’m not the only one.”Of the eight billion people on the planet, the number of serious barf bag collectors is just north of 100, according to notable members of their ranks. The ineffable whyWhen Steve Silberburg started collecting barf bags around 1981, he thought he would be the only one. People were indeed amused, but it had an unintended side effect: Classmates started bringing Silberburg other barf bags to add to his collection. “We don’t want anybody to get ahead of us, you know.”“It makes a good litmus test, telling people you collect barf bags,” Silberburg says.

A US-based lawyer who has represented accused Chinese money launderers said the tempo of law enforcement operations against the alleged launderers has increased in recent weeks as federal agents close in on “bigger fish” among Chinese money launderers in the US. None of the federal law enforcement agencies involved in tracking Chinese money launderers agreed to be interviewed on the record. Grassley and Whitehouse have each introduced legislation they say is key to closing loopholes in US law that are actively exploited by the cartels’ money launderers. Elaborate networksRecent court documents illuminate how far-flung and elaborate US-based networks of alleged Chinese money launderers are. Mirror TransactionsExperts say the Chinese money launderers have mastered the art of so-called mirror transactions, which involve a series of deposits at multiple bank accounts to conceal the drug money.

Hispanic consumers will likely continue buying Constellation Brands beer even as they tighten their purse strings, according to Jefferies, which can help the company as many shoppers experience economic stress. More than 40% of households purchasing Constellation's beer brands such as Corona and Modelo are Hispanic, according to Jefferies analyst Kaumil Gajrawala. But the Hispanic consumer base is tightening its belt elsewhere within the budgets and keeping up its Constellation spending, the analyst found. Jefferies data shows total beer spend across brands from Hispanic buyers is down 9% from 13 weeks ago. At Constellation Brands specifically, it ticked up just 1%, clearly boosted by the continued support of the Hispanic community.

Under an 80-year-old treaty, the United States and Mexico share waters from the Colorado River and the Rio Grande, respectively. They say the lack of water from Mexico is propelling them into crisis, leaving the future of farming in the balance. Pain in both countriesThe water from Mexico goes to the Falcon and Amistad Reservoirs which straddle the border and provide water to homes as well and farms. To rely only on storms to reduce water scarcity would make Mexico “totally exposed to what nature decides about our water future,” UNAM’s Magnaña Rueda said. Ultimately, there needs to be a recognition that water sharing agreements must adapt to a changing climate, Rueda said.

A rainstorm off the coast of Mexico became Tropical Storm Alberto on Wednesday, the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season. While the storm had maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour, the main concern was rainfall of a foot or more predicted for parts of Texas and Mexico. Tropical storm warnings were issued for coastal areas of Texas and northeastern Mexico. The storm was in the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday and was headed west toward northeastern Mexico, according to the National Hurricane Center. Forecasters predicted Alberto could make landfall early Thursday, most likely in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, but its effects were expected to extend far beyond that.

Mexican cartels are exploiting timeshare scams, targeting older Americans for over $300 million. Cartels often conduct "extensive research on their potential victims" before the scam, the FBI said. AdvertisementIt seems even Mexican drug cartels are cashing in on the day's most lucrative criminal enterprise: online scams. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Gulf Cartel, and the Sinaloa Cartel — which El Chapo once led — have all dabbled in online scams, the FBI says. Their scam of choice appears to be timeshare fraud, targeting mostly older Americans to the tune of over $300 million in the last five years.

In his first reaction to the verdict, Hunter Biden didn’t attack the judge or prosecutors, simply saying he was grateful for the love and support of his family and blessed to be clean again. The Hunter Biden verdict also contradicted the central rationale of Trump’s multiple legal defenses in his four criminal cases, several civil matters and his entire presidential campaign. “So much for the weaponization of the Justice Department to go after just the enemies of the other side,” Michael Zeldin, a former senior Justice Department official and federal prosecutor, said on CNN Max on Tuesday. Stephen Miller, Trump’s former White House domestic policy adviser, argued that the Justice Department had actually shown favoritism toward Hunter Biden by not charging him with 50 felonies over foreign influence peddling. “Hunter Biden just became the Deep State’s sacrificial lamb to show that Justice is ‘balanced’ while the other Biden crimes remain ignored,” she wrote on X.
