Apple stops offering buy now, pay later loans in U.S.
  + stars: | 2024-06-17 | by ( Kif Leswing | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Apple said on Monday that it has stopped issuing loans through Apple Pay Later, its buy-now-pay-later program that launched last year. The move comes after Apple said it would start allowing installment loans later this year in its Apple Pay checkout process through third-party companies, such as Affirm , and credit and debit cards from issuers, such as Citigroup. Apple said it would no longer issue Apple Pay Later loans, which enabled customers to buy products online and pay in four interest-free installments, at prices up to $1,000. Users with open loans will continue to have access to Apple Pay Later features to manage and pay their loans, Apple said. Before it was discontinued, Apple Pay Later enabled users to apply for loans within the iPhone Wallet app, and approved users would see a "Pay Later" option when checking out online.

Apple's new AI is made in Google data centers
  + stars: | 2024-06-14 | by ( Hugh Langley | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +5 min
But Apple and Google had for months been working together behind the scenes, with Google giving Apple access to its data centers to train the iPhone maker's new AI models. For years, Apple has leaned on Google and Amazon's cloud services to store data for its products. For example, when Apple device users do iCloud backups they are often stored in Google's data centers. Most of the impressive features of AI models must be at least partly handled in massive energy-sucking data centers, which companies such as Microsoft, Google and Amazon have spent years building. Bloomberg previously reported that Google and Apple were also in talks to bring Google's Gemini AI to iOS devices.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares speaks to media on June 13, 2024 following the company's investor day at its North American headquarters in Auburn Hills, Mich.AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Stellantis has achieved 8.4 billion euros ($9 billion) in cost reductions from the merger of Fiat Chrysler and PSA Groupe that created the company in January 2021, CEO Carlos Tavares said Thursday. That amount is more than double initial expectations from when the merger was announced in 2019, and an increase from the updated 5 billion euros in expected reductions within five years of completion of the merger that formed one of the world's largest automakers. Cost-saving measures have included reshaping the company's supply chain and operations, as well as headcount reductions. Since the merger was agreed to in December 2019, Stellantis has reduced headcount by 15.5%, or roughly 47,500 employees, through 2023, according to public filings. Microsoft will evaluate its employees' cybersecurity contributions in reviews that will factor into their compensation, Brad Smith, the company's vice chair and president, said ahead of a Thursday U.S. House committee hearing on the software maker's security practices. The changes represent part of Microsoft's efforts to address concerns about how much it's doing to protect its clients' data. For the current fiscal year, these high-ranking executives might see cybersecurity-related impacts reflected in their pay. "The Board also decided that for the current fiscal year, which ends on June 30, the Compensation Committee will consider explicitly each SLT member's cybersecurity performance when it makes its annual assessment of the executive's performance," Smith wrote. Shares of Tesla popped in premarket trading, after Elon Musk said shareholders are set to approve his controversial $56 billion pay package and a resolution to move the electric car maker's incorporation to Texas. Tesla shareholders have been voting on two resolutions and can have their say up to the company's annual meeting on Thursday. The first measure under consideration is whether to green light a $56 billion pay package that shareholders originally approved in 2018, before being voided by a Delaware judge in January. Musk now said that both of these resolutions are currently passing by "wide margins," without disclosing specifics or his sourcing. Critics of the pay deal argue that Musk is distracted by his other endeavors, and that the package, the largest in U.S. corporate history, is excessive.
