Ric Tapia | Getty Images Sport | Getty ImagesSports team owners benefiting from soaring team values are also facing new pressure from two of the oldest certainties in American wealth: death and taxes. With the average age of team owners rising, and team values skyrocketing into the billions, owners and leagues are increasingly focused on how to ensure smooth ownership transitions to the next generation of buyers. Succession and taxes have become especially important in the National Football League, where the average age of team owners is now over 72 and team values are all surging. The average NFL team is now worth $6.49 billion, and no team is valued at less than $5.25 billion, according to CNBC's Official 2024 NFL Team Valuations. So owners have to be planning for the potential for more punitive estate taxes in the coming years.

In today’s edition, "Meet the Press" moderator Kristen Welker examines whether a shortened campaign calendar will help or hurt Vice President Kamala Harris. Plus, we dive into Robert F. Kennedy's decision to suspend his third-party bid and back former President Donald Trump. I’m speaking, of course, of Donald Trump,” Kennedy added. Still, the initial conservations started earlier, about a week before the Republican convention, with right-wing commentator Tucker Carlson connecting Trump Jr. with Kennedy. From there, Trump Jr. and donor Omeed Malik served as go-betweens to help close the deal.

Donald Trump calls for mass deportations during a visit to the southern border. Harris spoke about her upbringing in San Francisco and her “unlikely journey” to becoming a prosecutor, senator and vice president. Anti-Trump sentiment was also a unifying theme this week, with both progressive and conservative speakers warning of the consequences if former President Donald Trump wins in November. Harris hammered the point in her speech, telling the crowd: "In many ways Donald Trump is an unserious man, but the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious." Trump made the comments in an interview with NBC News during a visit yesterday to the U.S-Mexico border in Arizona.

Auction sales during Monterey Car Week fell 3% from last year, as a shift from older to newer cars left a pileup of unsold classics from the 1950s and 1960s. Of the 1,143 cars up for sale, only 821 sold — marking a 72% sell-through rate, according to Hagerty. There were simply too many similar cars at too many auctions to generate strong prices and sales. "It's saturation," said Simon Kidston, the founder of Kidston and a leading advisor to wealthy car collectors. At the same time, a new generation of collectors driving the market — mainly Gen Xers and millennials — prefer cars from the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s.

Private jet flights fell 15% in the first half of the year compared with their peak in 2022, as the industry grapples with waning demand and a new competitive landscape for high-end travel. Despite a short boost from the Summer Olympics, with a record 713 private jet flights to Paris the last week of July, the private jet industry continues to lose altitude this travel season. Jet It, a large U.S. private jet operator, shut down last year after grounding its fleet of Phenom 300s, Gulfstream G150s and HondaJets. Private jet passengers who paid six figures for flights started facing delays and cancellations as operators couldn’t buy or lease planes fast enough. “Prices are about 20% higher than they were in 2019,” Private Jet Card Comparisons' Gollan said.

After Democrats’ long-held edge, Team Trump starts to close the battleground ad spending gapBy Ben KamisarIf you live in a swing state and are already sick of seeing presidential campaign ads, buckle up. Over that same period of time, the Trump campaign spent less than $230,000. But over the last two weeks, a dramatic shift from the Trump campaign has helped close the gap. It has spent a total of $13 million in those key states, compared to $16.5 million from the Harris campaign. But we’ve written before about how Republicans have cut into the Democrats’ fundraising edge, and these ad spending numbers show the fruits of that effort.

A study on long Covid fails to bring researchers closer to finding a diagnostic test. Why there’s no test yet for long CovidAn estimated 17 million people have long Covid, but identifying people with the condition still can't be achieved with one diagnostic test, researchers said this week. So “clinicians are left to continue doing what we have done in the past,” which is to rule out other potential health conditions rather than diagnosing long Covid, they said. The study is part of the National Institute of Health’s RECOVER Initiative, a billion-dollar-plus effort launched in 2021 to research causes and treatments of long Covid. The Freedom Caucus added that in the event of a stopgap bill, funding should be “extended into early 2025” to avoid passing a funding bill that “preserves Democrat spending.” Both demands would spark a standoff with Democratic lawmakers.

The Murdoch family feud taking place in an obscure Nevada court highlights the state's surging popularity as a global center of family trusts and a friendly home to the world's biggest fortunes. The Western state's fast-growing industry of trust and estate attorneys, trust companies and facilitators keeps a deliberately low profile. Yet experts estimate the state likely has hundreds of billions of dollars in trust assets locked away in nondescript office buildings or trust companies, offering little to no visibility to the outside world. In the race among states to attract the hundreds of billions of dollar in new trust assets, Nevada has a comfortable lead. Perhaps its most powerful advantage, and the one with direct bearing on the Murdoch case, is trust flexibility.

But thanks to the fine-tuning of the tech that Corporate America uses to police subscriptions, those freeloading days are over. Costco and Disney this month took a page from the Netflix playbook and announced they are cracking down on account sharers. Disney’s streaming business — Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ — only became profitable in the second quarter this year. Like Netflix, Costco is betting that you’re already emotionally invested in the routine and the satisfaction of getting a closet’s worth of toilet paper that can last the whole year. Last year, the store reported $4.6 billion in revenue from membership fees, and that accounts for the majority of its profit.
