June 14 (Reuters) - Lennar Corp (LEN.N) on Wednesday raised its full-year forecast for home deliveries, as the homebuilder benefits from upbeat demand that far outpaced supply. Homebuilders are benefiting from the lack of existing home inventory and pent up demand they were unable to meet in previous years. The perennial shortage of homes on the market is frustrating would-be buyers eager to take advantage of dips in mortgage rates. The Miami-based homebuilder raised its total home deliveries forecast for 2023 to 68,000 to 70,000 homes, up from its prior guidance of between 62,000 and 66,000 homes. The company reported a second-quarter profit of $3.01 per share, above average analysts' estimate of $2.32 per share, according to Refinitiv data.

RBC Capital Markets thinks strong gains are in store for Toll Brothers as demand improves. The firm thinks sentiment surrounding the luxury homebuilder's shares have been "overly negative." Analyst Mike Dahl said "given TOL's high-end, West Coast and build-to-order exposures," recent trends show the company has experienced improvement similar to its peers. Toll Brothers announced its fiscal second-quarter earnings Tuesday after the bell. However, the analyst believes Toll Brothers is a relative outperformer due to its resilient margins profile higher than its peers' average and an inexpensive valuation.

NEW YORK — When the bond chief of the world's biggest asset manager looks at the U.S. right now, he sees a lot to like. A combination of resilient government, corporate and consumer spending, improving homebuilder data, $1.5 trillion in excess savings and low unemployment tell BlackRock's Rick Rieder that the American economy is faring better than many expected. "I think the U.S. economy's in much better shape than people give [it] credit" for, Rieder said Tuesday at an event at BlackRock's New York headquarters. Talk of a pending recession has been building as the impact of the Federal Reserve's interest rate increases ripple through the economy. "When people talk about, 'We're going to a recession or a deep recession,' it's pretty unusual [or] almost impossible when you have an unemployment rate of 3.4%," Rieder said.

Indeed, retail sales in April rose a weaker-than-expected 0.4% for the month, according to an advanced sales report. Retail sales excluding automobiles, gasoline, building materials and food services rebounded 0.7% last month, the Commerce Department said. Data for March was revised slightly down to show these so-called core retail sales slipping 0.4% instead of 0.3% as previously reported. Core retail sales correspond most closely with the consumer spending component of gross domestic product. Economists estimated that core retail sales adjusted for inflation rose by about 0.6% in April. Sales at food services and drinking places, the only services category in the retail sales report, rose 0.6%.
It's the fifth straight month of gains and the first reading of builder sentiment since July that wasn't negative, which would be a reading below 50. With mortgage rates now double what they were a year and a half ago, some potential sellers may be reluctant to trade to another home at a higher rate. Homebuilders also drew more buyers by offering incentives, like buying down mortgage rates. Sentiment in the Midwest rose 2 points to 39. In the South, it increased 3 points to 52, and in the West moved 3 points higher to 41.

David Einhorn joined other big investors in shares in several regional bank stocks last quarter in a bet that the financial institutions would survive the industry crisis that felled Silicon Valley and First Republic banks. That's the bank whose subsidiary, Flagstar, acquired Signature Bank assets after that bank was shuttered. Einhorn's additions come amid a broad selloff of regional bank stocks on concern more institutions could fail as depositors withdrew assets and the value of banks' bond holdings narrowed. "Big Short" investor Michael Burry also bought regional bank stocks last quarter. Outside of the bank stocks, Einhorn notably increased exposure to Concentrix , Gulfport Energy and Tenet Healthcare .
Mortgage rates are tied indirectly to the Fed through the yield on the 10-year Treasury note, and could still move around while the central bank is paused. The ETFs that track the industry have already outperformed this year, rebounding from dramatic declines in 2022. The rapid Fed rate hikes last year appeared to spook consumers, who saw their future monthly payments climb sharply just while they were in the midst of searching for new homes. ITB YTD mountain Homebuilder ETFs like the ITB have outperformed in 2023. And a relatively stable interest rate outlook should make it easier for the homebuilders to hit those raised estimates, according to their own executives.
"Simply stated we're in a freight recession." That line, uttered last Monday by Shelley Simpson, president of J.B. Hunt (JBHT), the fourth-largest trucking company in the United States, was the most memorable of the real first week of earnings season. If so, it would know that we're dealing with much more than a freight recession. It's not enough to offset the immense deflationary pressure emanating from the regional banks and the freight recession described by J.B. Hunt. Stocks that investors might expect to be shorted in the buildup to a recession are doing very well, buoying their whole sectors, CNBC's Jim Cramer said Thursday. There are certain kinds of industries that have historically been targeted by short sellers in the run-up to recession, Cramer said, including railroads, semiconductors, homebuilders and automakers. Steel firm Nucor would be an "obvious short" headed into a recession, Cramer said, but the company reported strong growth and "blew away the estimates." Homebuilders are likely short candidates ahead of a recession, but that doesn't seem to be happening here, Cramer said. But as Cramer has noted before, strong performing companies with effective management can weather most storms.
AT&T (T.N) shares dropped 10.4% after the wireless carrier missed market estimates for first-quarter revenue and free cash flow. The S&P 500's rally to start the year is set to be tested by a first-quarter earnings season that investors expect to show tepid results. “The market has been overbought for the last week or two," said Anthony Saglimbene, chief market strategist at Ameriprise Financial. In other earnings news, American Express Co (AXP.N) profit missed Wall Street estimates and its shares fell 1%. Shares of Lam Research (LRCX.O) rose 7.2% after the chip-making equipment supplier's revenue topped estimates, while shares of D.R.
The National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index rose to 45 in April, a one-point gain. Builders in the report cited a lack of listings on the resale market, which gave them an unusually strong edge. Slightly lower mortgage rates are also helping demand — though rates are still higher than they were a year ago. "Builders note that additional declines in mortgage rates, to below 6%, will price-in further demand for housing," said Alicia Huey, NAHB chairman and a custom homebuilder and developer from Birmingham, Alabama. It marked the first time both of the indicators were positive since June, when mortgage rates really took off.
