CNN —From his seaside Florida resort, Donald Trump is holding a casting call to fill the toughest job in Washington: attorney general. Current and former Justice officials anticipate eventual departures in some parts of the department and employees being sidelined and forced out. The Justice Department is also charged with defending administration actions in court, covering issues from health care to the environment to gun control. “Attorney General Jeff Sessions has taken a VERY weak position on Hillary Clinton crimes,” he wrote in a Twitter post in July 2017. Trump told Fox Business in 2020 that Barr should indict Obama, Biden and others because of the Russia investigation.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump is likely to pick Florida Sen. Marco Rubio as his secretary of state, two people familiar with his thinking told CNN, as he rounds out his national security team in a second term. Given his deep foreign policy experience and that he sits on both the Senate Intelligence Committee and the Foreign Relations Committee, the State Department seemed like a good fit for Rubio. The Florida senator, a China hawk and finalist for Trump’s VP, was a constant on the campaign trail during Trump’s third presidential run. In 2016, Rubio and Trump’s relationship seemed it may be beyond repair when in the closing days of his campaign, Rubio publicly attacked Trump, saying he wasn’t going to “make America great. But since, Rubio and Trump’s relationship has not only thawed, it has strengthened.

And some Mar-a-Lago members have been offered money by those seeking to be taken to the club as a guest and rub elbows with Trump, three sources familiar with the situation told CNN. There are no restrictions on who members can bring as guests, and outsiders are trying to take advantage of that while it still holds. Advisers insist that Trump’s transition is much more orderly this time around, and by all accounts, the transition itself has steered clear of the chaos. Trump advisers have held formal meetings with the transition team and the president-elect during the day at the resort, presenting him with plans for policy and personnel. Here are five takeaways on the voters Trump won and what it means moving forward:The Latino realignmentA trend with the potential to remake the American political landscape is the huge shift in Latino voters toward Trump. Trump’s 1.5-point win in Osceola County flipped a location that President Joe Biden won by 14 points four years earlier. Trump’s performance similarly improved in Orange County, home of Orlando, where Biden won by 23 points in 2020 but Harris won by just 5.6 points this year. Trump’s gains are explained in part by his appeals to Black men, and his efforts to reach out to Arab American voters. Harris won by 10 points and 85,000 votes — short of the 14-point, 114,000-vote win Biden had notched there in 2020.

But the one person who has loomed over it all and has exerted a great deal of influence is Elon Musk, according to multiple sources. Trump put the call on speaker, and Zelensky thanked Musk for his help providing communications to Ukraine through the billionaire’s Starlink internet service. As of mid-October, Musk had donated nearly $119 million to a political action committee he set up to support Trump, according to Federal Election Commission filings. The day after the election, investors sent shares of Tesla up nearly 15%. Sanders added it is “problematic” if schedule F is being used to reinforce and maintain political loyalty. The spoils system was replaced by the current merit-based system where career employees serve multiple administrations, carrying out their jobs independent of politics. The Biden administration erected temporary roadblocks at the federal Office of Personnel Management – rules aimed at protecting federal workers from retaliatory mass firings. The District of Columbia itself has the largest individual chunk of federal workers in any state or territory, with more than 162,000. While this kind of catharsis might work to temporarily allay worries, experts say doom spending poses a danger to consumers’ long-term financial health. Joe Raedle/Getty ImagesThat financial gloom is powering doom spending and, in turn, driving up credit card debt. Beyond the economy, experts say that internet habits play a significant role in driving doom spending, especially for younger consumers.
