AMD shares jump as earnings defy collapse seen at Intel
  + stars: | 2023-02-01 | by ( Aditya Soni | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Feb 1 (Reuters) - Shares of Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD.O) rose nearly 7% on Wednesday after the U.S. chipmaker's upbeat earnings showed that it was making up for a personal-computer slump with gains in the lucrative data center market. The data center market has slowed in recent months due to lower spending from recession-wary businesses, but AMD's faster and smaller chips have allowed it to gain ground on Intel. "AMD can continue to beat Intel in the data center space due to its leading design," said Lucas Keh, semiconductors analyst at Third Bridge. J.P. Morgan pegged AMD's share gain in the server market this year at 5 to 7 percentage points to between 28% and 30%. "First quarter should be the bottom for us in PCs and then grow from there into the second quarter and then into the second half," Su said.
In general, investors are relieved that AMD still expects data-center growth in 2023 despite mounting economic pressures. AMD's data-center outlook isn't perfect. For the first quarter, in particular, AMD expects data-center sales to be lower than the $1.7 billion it recorded in the fourth quarter of 2022. The unpleasant PC experience caused AMD's warning about data-center inventory hurdles to raise the Club's eyebrows. AMD expects that continue to again in 2023.

Alphabet is set to report earnings after the close, followed by a conference call at 4:30 p.m.
When Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) reports quarterly earnings next week, the Club holding's results should not look nearly as bad as longtime rival Intel 's (INTC) dismal numbers. But the magnitude of the Intel's disappointment stems from many company-specific factors, including lost market share to chip peers such as AMD. This multi-quarter, industrywide problem will likely show up in the fourth-quarter results AMD is scheduled to release after Tuesday's close. Implications for AMD Morgan Stanley said it believes Intel's results are "cautious" for peers, especially AMD. Bank of America sees Intel's results as "only incrementally negative" for AMD, partially because the analysts believe AMD's inventory correction in the second half of the year was larger than Intel's.

The chipmaker's tepid quarterly numbers, with a 32% year-over-year revenue decline and a net loss of $664 million for the fourth quarter of 2022, took both analysts and investors by surprise. Analysts did not mince words, cutting price targets almost across the board. Rosenblatt maintained its sell rating for Intel and lowered its price target from $20 to $17.

Jan 25 (Reuters) - Britain's competition regulator said on Wednesday it had started the first phase of an investigation into U.S. chipmaker Broadcom Inc's (AVGO.O) $61 billion acquisition of cloud-computing firm VMware Inc (VMW.N). The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said in November it was investigating whether the deal between the two U.S.-listed companies could substantially hurt competition in Britain, adding that it had until March 22 to decide. The Broadcom-VMware deal was one of the biggest announcements globally in 2022, marking the chipmaker's attempt to diversify into the enterprise software segment. Broadcom and VMware did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. Total revenue fell 3% to $4.67 billion in the quarter, compared with estimates of $4.62 billion. In the back half of 2023, analysts expect an acceleration in capex spending in both the U.S., "and potentially in China." Also supportive of AMD shares, the analysts believe that the PC inventory glut should bottom out in the current quarter. Texas Instruments on Thursday announced that its CEO for almost 19 years, Rich Templeton, will step down on April 1 as Haviv Ilan, its chief operating officer, replaces him. Ilan arrived at Texas Instruments in 1999 by way of the company acquisition of the Israeli wireless startup Butterfly. Before becoming operating chief at Texas Instruments, he had been senior vice president of its analog signal chain and high-performance analog divisions.
Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said Tuesday the chipmaker's move beyond smartphones is working — but we want to see the Club holding's upcoming earnings report before we rethink our cautious approach. In a similar way, Qualcomm also is expanding its presence in the automotive industry as cars become more technologically advanced. Amon also downplayed the company's reliance on Apple, which has been working to replace Qualcomm's chips with its own 5G modem chip . The Club has generally adopted a cautious approach to Qualcomm in recent months, particularly after that November earnings print with weak guidance. Chip woes short-circuit Samsung's best laid plans

HONG KONG, Jan 6 (Reuters Breakingviews) - South Korea's Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) can only defy gravity for so long. The worse-than-expected earnings guidance throws cold water on the chipmaker's aggressive supply and capital expenditure spending plans laid out in October. Analysts at Citi reckon Samsung’s memory chip capex this year will be roughly $25 billion, more than 10% lower than their earlier forecast. Samsung's best laid plans are starting to go astray. TAINAN, Taiwan, Dec 29 (Reuters) - Chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd (TSMC)(2330.TW), began mass production of its most advanced chips in southern Taiwan on Thursday and the company's chairman said it would continue to expand capacity on the island. The long-awaited mass production of chips with 3-nanometre technology comes as attention focuses on the world's largest contract chipmaker's investment plans at home and abroad. TSMC has a dominant position as a maker of advanced chips used in technology from cellphones to fighter jets. Taiwan's government has dismissed concerns about a "goodbye to Taiwan" trend for the chip industry, saying the island's position as a major semiconductor producer and maker of the most advanced chips is secure. TSMC said it was working to build factories for the next generation 2-nanometre chips, which were planned to be manufactured in northern and central Taiwan.
Club take: We've pared back our position in AMD this year as the semicondcutor company worked through its inventory correction. The company has to do more in terms of managing its costs, but it will likely be a priority in 2023. Analysts described growth outlooks in these segments as "robust" and expect them to drive revenue growth and margin expansion. BofA calls the Club stock a "top tier operator" and expects the company to grow revenue in the coming year despite fears of an economic downturn. Analysts expect to see strong data center growth next year, a business they said could reach $20 billion by 2023.

Money market participants expect at least two 25 bps rate hikes next year and borrowing costs to peak at about 4.9% by midyear, before falling to around 4.4% by year-end. All the 11 major S&P 500 sectors were in the red, with communication services (.SPLRCL) and technology stocks (.SPLRCT) falling about 4% as the worst performing on the session. The S&P 500 posted one new 52-week high and seven new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 51 new highs and 289 new lows.
The Fed's policy-setting committee projected it would continue raising rates to above 5% in 2023, a level not seen since a steep economic downturn in 2007. Money market participants currently expect at least two 25 bps rate hikes next year and borrowing costs to peak at 4.9% in the first half, before falling to around 4.4% by the year end. Wall Street's main indexes have staged a strong recovery since hitting 2022 lows in October on hopes of a less aggressive Fed, but the rally stalled in December on the back of mixed economic data and worrying corporate forecasts. Investors also digested economic data on Thursday that showed a steeper-than-expected decline in retail sales in November and the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits falling last week, indicating a tight labor market. The S&P index recorded no new 52-week highs and four new lows, while the Nasdaq recorded 24 new highs and 120 new lows.
