Julian Quinones/CNNFormer Trump administration officials have outlined the speed at which they intend to dismantle the progress the Biden administration made on climate change. Trump has publicly distanced himself from the ideological blueprint, but CNN found at least 140 authors worked in the Trump administration. But given the momentum of the clean energy train, some experts and analysists doubt that Trump would be able to derail it entirely. While the green trend in economics now has Republican states like Texas leading the nation in clean energy installations, Germany, Japan and China got there first. Trump’s plan is to undo that progress, throw billions of dollars of clean energy investment out the window and give other countries the economic opportunity, instead.

Both presidential campaigns have discussed ideas for cutting housing costs. Economists say lowering labor and building material costs is far more important to home building. Housing policy experts and economists disagree, saying lower energy costs would not significantly boost construction or make homes cheaper. Notably, under the Biden administration, the US has produced and exported more crude oil than ever before in the country's history, even as housing costs have soared. AdvertisementLabor costs and cutting red tape are also keyLabor costs are generally growing as a portion of overall construction costs, Basu said.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit Thursday against CBS Broadcasting Inc. and CBS Interactive Inc., demanding $10 billion in damages over the network’s “60 Minutes” interview with Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump’s legal counsel argued that “CBS’s misconduct was unconscionable because it amounts to a brazen attempt to interfere in the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election.”A spokesperson for CBS said that Trump’s claims against “60 Minutes” are false. “The Interview was not doctored; and 60 MINUTES did not hide any part of the Vice President’s answer to the question at issue. 60 MINUTES fairly presented the Interview to inform the viewing audience, and not to mislead it. The lawsuit Trump has brought today against CBS is completely without merit and we will vigorously defend against it,” the spokesperson continued.

CNN —In the closely watched battleground state of Michigan, election officials are under the microscope, with isolated mistakes or missteps serving as fodder for election deniers to lay the groundwork for widespread doubt of election results. Some of the confusion appears to have originated from a post on X by Matthew DePerno, one of the more high-profile election deniers in Michigan. DePerno has pleaded not guilty in the voting machines case. When it does happen, we take it extremely seriously,” Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit said in a statement. Hinchliffe's Puerto Rico joke spawned the initial news cycle (and within 24 hours, a new digital ad from Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign). Related storiesThe Harris campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment. That leaves it to each campaign to try to generate their own moments, like when Trump did a photo-op at McDonald's. In both cases, they were upstaged by secondary moments that their opponents successfully latched onto, with Hinchcliffe drowning out Trump's rally and Biden spoiling Harris' rally. Next week's presidential election could have a big impact on municipal bonds, according to Morgan Stanley. In that case, the federal tax exemption becomes worth more, said Dan Close, head of municipals at Nuveen. However, studies have shown a move of just a couple percentage points "doesn't really move the needle" for muni demand, Brandon said. The TCJA increased the AMT exemption and raised the income level at which the exemption would phase out. That's because banks and insurance companies in the U.S. own about a quarter of all outstanding muni bonds, he explained.

Over the past seven decades, Puerto Rico has been governed by the pro-statehood New Progressive Party, currently in office held by Gov. This year, however, the candidate from the Puerto Rican Independence Party, a minority party that advocates for the island’s independence from the U.S., has had a breakthrough. Independence Party candidate Juan Dalmau has gained enough momentum to have a fighting chance at defeating Jenniffer Gonzalez, the candidate from the incumbent pro-statehood party, and relegating the candidate from the Popular Democratic Party, Jesús Manuel Ortiz, to third place. As a result, Congress passed the PROMESA law in 2016 to create a federally appointed fiscal oversight board to allow Puerto Rico to restructure its debt. In addition to this, Puerto Rico was hit by devastating natural disasters that include 2017’s Hurricane María and a series of earthquakes in 2020 and the pandemic.

Their clash has already drawn more ad spending than any other Senate race in history, eclipsing the $412 million spent in Georgia’s 2020 race between Jon Ossoff and David Perdue. While Moreno clings to Trump, Brown tends to avoid talking too much about national political figures from either party. “Sherrod Brown, he’s taking ads in like he’s my best friend,” the former president said Sunday during a rally at Madison Square Garden in New York. He also acknowledged the threat of ticket-splitters — and the importance of Trump having coattails long enough to carry Moreno along with him. But then-Rep. Turning Point Action is one of several outside groups that have taken over the work of canvassing on behalf of Republicans. Those rules were in the spotlight in 2020, after Joe Biden won a handful of key battleground states by a razor-thin margin. Ahead of Election Day, here's a refresher of the recount rules in the states expected to be the closest in the presidential race. A bipartisan group of lawmakers approved new measures in 2024 that would shorten the time needed for a potential recount. Then, after the state certified Biden's victory, the Trump campaign requested a machine recount, as was its right under state law. The state recently enacted changes to Michigan's recount law, but none will go into effect before Election Day.

Former President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he would "protect" women "whether the women like it or not," a comment the Harris campaign immediately pounced on. "I said, 'Well, I’m going to do it, whether the women like it or not,'" Trump said. A Harris campaign spokesperson, Sarafina Chitika, also said on X that Trump "thinks he knows better than the women of America." Reached for comment, Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said: "Harris may be the first woman Vice President but she has implemented dangerously liberal policies that have left women worse off financially and far less safe than we were four years ago under President Trump. Harris has centered much of her campaign on preserving and expanding reproductive rights after the end of Roe v. Wade.

“(It) doesn’t matter who it is (that wins),” one social media user wrote in a popular comment on China’s X-like platform Weibo. “There’s no perfect system, but at least they allow people to question them,” one social media user said on Weibo. Both Harris and Trump have been hot topics on Chinese social media platforms. As a former acting U.S. trade representative who also served on the National Security Council, I’ve engaged in international economic policymaking firsthand. Trump’s main economic idea is to indiscriminately impose tariffs on U.S. trading partners, but it is American importers, exporters and consumers who will pay the price. When Trump last levied tariffs, the EU, Canada, China and other trading partners imposed their own tariffs in retaliation. While President Joe Biden left most of Trump’s tariffs against China in place, he managed to negotiate agreements that led to the easing of many retaliatory measures. As president, Harris would lead an economy that helps everyone, not just those at the very top.

On one level, Trump’s comment shows how his false election fraud claims have entered the outer realms of absurdity. The election fraud claims that Trump most notably supercharged in 2020 to salve his humiliation at losing to Joe Biden are already at high intensity this year. After laying out the darkest closing argument in modern American history, Trump is now increasingly turning to poisoning public confidence in the election. Gore conceded that election, thereby guaranteeing an uncontested transfer of presidential power — a step Trump refused to take four years ago. Just 30% of registered voters think Trump would accept the results of the election and concede if he loses, while 73% say that Harris would accept an election loss.

Trump has proposed extending his slew of tax cuts from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 — also known as the "Trump tax cut."
