The latest benefit from the artificial intelligence revolution: saving American taxpayers billions of dollars. The U.S. Treasury Department said its increased use of artificial intelligence in fraud detection helped prevent or recover more than $4 billion over the past year. "Helping ensure that agencies pay the right person, in the right amount, at the right time is central to our efforts." A Treasury official declined to provide specific examples of how AI had been deployed, given the nature of the activities targeted. The Department said it plans to lend resources and lessons-learned from its AI efforts to other federal agencies.

New York CNN —The federal government’s bet on using artificial intelligence to fight financial crime appears to be paying off. The Treasury Department credited AI with helping officials prevent and recover more than $4 billion worth of fraud overall in fiscal 2024, a six-fold spike from the year before. US officials quietly started using AI to detect financial crime in late 2022, taking a page out of what many banks and credit card companies already do to stop bad guys. The Treasury’s use of AI to fight financial crime is just getting started. Officials are testing new data sources to better spot fraud and shady payments, and they are teaming up with state agencies to fight unemployment insurance fraud.

The head of the International Monetary Fund cautioned on Thursday that high debt and low growth remained major impediments to the global economy. "When we look into the challenges ahead of us, the biggest one is low growth, high debt. "It is successful major economies that have done really well … and there are pockets in the world where inflation is still a problem," she said. Georgieva warned that international trade would no longer be the "engine of growth" it once was, highlighting the proliferation of restrictive policies among many economies. Earlier on Thursday, Georgieva also pointed to wider geopolitical tensions as one of the key risks to global financial stability.

New York CNN —The bitcoin bulls and meme stock traders are fired up about the prospect of another Donald Trump White House. At the same time, shares of Trump Media were bouncing back from Tuesday’s mysterious 10% drop and resuming their meme-stock-esque tendency to rise without any fundamental reason to do so. What do the two assets, a digital currency and a media stock, have in common? Crypto traders are amped because of the Republican nominee’s apparent 180 on the asset class he once dismissed as a scam. Bottom line: Both bitcoin and Trump Media could become even more volatile over the next few weeks as more traders pile in.

“Shark Tank” Over the Years Season 1 (2009-10) The show premiered against the backdrop of the Great Recession. “‘Shark Tank’ is not a game show,” said Kevin O’Leary, a cutthroat investor known sarcastically in the tank as Mr. “Shark Tank” debuted less than a year after the subprime mortgage crisis devastated the global economy. But those kinds of companies are rarely reflected on “Shark Tank” for one simple reason: They don’t make for good TV. “The buyer gave us a shot at Target because of the ‘Shark Tank’ appearance.”“We turn you into a rock star and you become part of the ‘Shark Tank’ culture and the lore of ‘Shark Tank’,” said Mr. O’Leary.

The EU's NIS 2 cybersecurity directive sets a high benchmark for companies over their internal cybersecurity systems and practices. On Thursday, the new directive officially became enforceable by member states. However, most EU member states have yet to implement NIS 2 in their own respective national laws, meaning that enforcement is likely to be spotty. NIS 2 — or the Network and Information Security Directive 2 — is an EU directive that aims to increase the security of IT systems and networks across the bloc. Fladgate's Wright said that effectiveness of NIS 2 as a regulation will largely depend on consistent implementation and enforcement across EU member states.

China vowed more financial support for real estate projects that fall under its so-called whitelist and to speed up banks lending of 4 trillion yuan ($561.8 billion) for such projects, according to the nation's housing ministry. A total of 2.23 trillion yuan has been approved in loans to whitelisted developers, and that figure is expected to exceed 4 trillion yuan by the end of this year, according to a senior official from the financial regulator. Real estate was also the leading gainer in Mainland China's CSI 300, advancing by nearly 5%. Days later, officials in a top-level meeting, chaired by Chinese president Xi Jinping, pledged to "halt the real estate market decline and spur a stable recovery." More than 50 cities across China had introduced policies to boost the real estate market, according to Chinese state media citing the housing ministry.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday gave investors his stamp of approval to buy some shares of Nike , but he warned that such an investment is tricky. "You've got my blessing to put on a small position — only small — because if Nike really can turn itself around, the stock will take off long before the financials do," he said. "You need to get ahead of that, but it's a risky call, so I suggest building your position gradually over time." Nike is also somewhat hostage to the consumer environment in the U.S. and abroad Cramer said. And while he admitted he'd like more definitive proof of a Nike turnaround, Cramer noted that by the time that happens, it may be too late to get in to the stock.

New developments show the path for Western banks trying to exit Russia has gotten tougher. Moscow will block the sale of Western bank assets to local Russia buyers, sources told Bloomberg. Russia's government has signaled that it will block any efforts from Western banks to offload their local units to Russian-owned entities, according to Bloomberg, who cited people familiar with the matter. Given the fact that Russia has also prevented sales to foreign buyers, these Western banks appear to be stuck, with limited options available. This latest development is an expansion of the Kremlin's ongoing campaign to keep Western firms within its borders.

Since then, economists have been expecting an additional stimulus package worth up to 10 trillion yuan ($1.4 trillion) to restore bullishness in the world’s second-largest economy. Chinese Housing Minister Ni Hong attends a press conference on the property sector in Beijing, China, on October 17, 2024. Widespread concernThe ailing property sector is widely believed to lie at the root of China’s numerous economic woes. It also cut the reserve requirement ratio for banks by half a percentage point, which would free up about 1 trillion yuan ($142 billion) for new lending. Morgan Stanley's Mike Wilson says the stock market's bull run could slow if the dollar strengthens again. AdvertisementMorgan Stanley's top stock strategist is eyeing one risk in particular that could threaten the stock market's big rally: a stronger US dollar. According to the firm's chief US equity strategist, Mike Wilson, a dollar re-strengthening could hinder stock gains. The greenback weakened as markets prepared for steep rate cuts, but that move has reversed in recent weeks as strong economic data makes more aggressive policy easing less likely. Wilson's call comes two years into the market's bull rally, with major indexes continuing to hit fresh all-time highs.
