Ray Dalio, billionaire and founder of Bridgewater Associates LP, speaks during the Milken Institute Conference Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesAs concerns mount over rising interest rates and inflation levels, billionaire investor Ray Dalio says he prefers to hold cash for now, not bonds. "Temporarily, right now, cash I think is good … and the interest rates are fine. I don't think [it] will be sustained that way," Dalio told an audience at the Milken Institute Asia Summit in Singapore on Thursday. But the real problem comes when individuals or investors don't hold the bonds, because it comes as a supply-demand, one man's debts or another man's assets," he explained. Dalio cautioned that investors will sell their bonds if they are not receiving real interest rates that are high enough.

A federal program that provides monthly income to elderly, blind and disabled Americans to provide for their basic needs has not been updated in about 40 years. On Tuesday, Washington lawmakers renewed a push to update rules associated with the program known as Supplemental Security Income, or SSI. The proposal, called the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act, would raise the program's asset limits to $10,000 for an individual and $20,000 for couples, up from $2,000 and $3,000, respectively. "It's an easy fix, encourages work, allows savings and gets people out of poverty," Cassidy said Tuesday during a Capitol Hill event. "And they punish people who want to do the right thing and save money."

Author Jason Vitug says we need money to be happy and it should not be a source of stress. Not having enough money is an immediate stressor and saving money protects against that." It comes down to how you want to live your life, happy and free or in-debt and stressed." Vitug writes, "Saving purposefully leads to growing your money (making money with money)." He concludes, "You need to be good with money to live a happy life.

To find ways to build an opportunity fund to improve your life, three tips may help. From there, start to identify what kind of contributions you may need to help achieve your goals. 5 strategies to pay off your student loans ahead of scheduleMore than half of students take out student loans to pay for college, with the average debt load upon graduation totaling nearly $30,000. Be cautious about refinancing federal student loans: Doing so means sacrificing federal repayment plans and other protections. Pay off interest during school and your grace periodInterest starts accruing on most student loans, such as federal unsubsidized loans and private student loans, from the day they are paid out (known as the disbursement date), usually at the beginning of each semester. Pursue student loan forgiveness and assistanceIf you’re open to switching jobs, consider pursuing a role that would make you eligible for student loan forgiveness or assistance. If you have federal student loans, you may need to set up autopay again before the payment pause ends in October.

There are two kinds of risk that investors should understand when building a portfolio: risk tolerance and risk capacity. Safer assets, like cash or money market funds, are stable but have relatively low returns that may not deliver much if any growth after inflation. Risk tolerance is essentially an investor's comfort level with short-term market gyrations. It's a willingness to take risk and is personal, subjective and guided by emotion, experts said. Such a person would have a low risk tolerance.

MEXICO CITY, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Mexican fintech Stori on Thursday announced the acquisition of MasCaja, a financial firm that will provide it a license to broaden its product portfolio in a market where many lack access to financial services. "We want to take the next step to boost financial inclusion," Stori co-founder Marlene Garayzar told Reuters. Stori, which reached unicorn status last year, already offers credit cards with lines starting at 500 Mexican pesos ($28), in a country where government data shows less than 35% of the adult population has formal credit. Earlier this year, Stori said it had reached 2 million users. ($1 = 17.5722 Mexican pesos)Reporting by Valentine Hilaire; Editing by Leslie AdlerOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

My husband is close to retirement, and we've been thinking about the continuing cost of a mortgage. We could pay off our mortgage now and be free from interest, but it's not the best use of our money. One of those plans is to pay off our mortgage in retirement. Let's say instead of paying off our mortgage, we took $100,000 from our retirement savings, put it in a CD, and blocked it for 12 months. My husband and I also looked at the tax benefit of mortgage interest.

Money market funds, on the other hand — while also generally safe — are a bit riskier, experts said. Investors who prefer money market funds may opt for government money market funds, which carry slightly less risk, Elliott said. YieldMoney market funds tend to pay a slightly higher interest rate relative to high-yield savings accounts, Elliott said. TaxesInterest income for both high-yield savings and money funds is taxed as regular income, experts said. However, some money market funds may carry tax benefits, said Eric Bronnenkant, head of tax at Betterment.

As a financial planner, there's certain tough advice my clients never want to hear. Advice like, buy less house — and don't expect your home to be a good investment. As a financial advisor, I'm constantly giving people good advice they don't want. I know no one wants to hear this kind of money advice. No one wants to imagine a worst-case scenario, but if something actually went sideways in your financial life, you'll be glad you had multiple levels of safety net built into your overall plan.

I've been worried about how inflation will affect my money, so I asked financial planners. I decided to find financial advisors who can give me their advice on what to do with my cash. "The combination of inflation and rising interest rates mean that debt will be taking a much bigger bite out of most people," says Zigmont. He says average credit card interest rates are expected to rise. "When interest rates rise, bond prices decline due to the fact that new bonds will be issued offering higher interest payments," says Tolitsky.

Earlier this year, I moved some funds from my high-yield savings account to several CDs. To earn the most of my savings and take advantage of all the best CD rates, I decided to employ the CD ladder strategy. Laddering CDs gives you the best of both worldsA CD ladder is when you divide up savings into different CDs, each at varying term lengths. I'm happier with the interest rates that come with early withdrawal penaltiesWhen I was researching CDs, I looked into several options, such as no-penalty CDs. While there are other ways I can earn more on cash sitting in my account, I've opted for a CD ladder.

By Martha C. WhiteWith interest rates on the rise, certificates of deposit are very much in the spotlight today. Best 1-year CD ratesToday’s market for one-year CDs is big and very competitive, with many offering even batter rates than on their longer-term options. The Fed has been steadily hiking interest rates in its effort to fight inflation. These CD rate picks picks reflect the best available one-year CD rates we found on DepositAccounts, com, which tracks roughly 275,000 rates at more than 11,000 banks and credit unions. I have three high-yield savings accounts that I use for my emergency fund and long-term goals. With many boasting interest rates over 5% — far greater than the average savings account interest rate — there's no question why they're on so many people's minds. This reignited interest has garnered discussion about where to find the best high-yield savings accounts rates. My first high-yield savings account was with AllyWhen I started my savings journey, I opened my Ally high-yield savings account after reading articles that compared different banks and seeing that name come up often. Using high-yield savings accounts with high interest rates helped, allowing me to get a small bonus deposit each month.

With the Federal Reserve steadily raising interest rates to fight inflation, high-yield savings account payouts have steadily risen, too. After years of near-zero returns, the average savings account rate has risen to 0.43%, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Unlike some high-yield online savings accounts, you earn a high APY—currently 5%—on every dollar in your account. You can conduct immediate electronic transfers between your brokerage account and savings account, and manage both savings and investment activities on a single platform. How we pickedTo pick Buy Side from WSJ’s Best Savings Accounts, we looked for accounts that offered the best APY on deposited funds without restrictions.

A report last year by the non-profit Climate Policy Initiative found Africa has received only 12% of the finance it needs to cope with climate impacts. The thousands of delegates are expected to debate solutions ahead of a U.N. climate summit next month in New York in September and the COP28 U.N. summit in the United Arab Emirates from the end of November. The summit's organisers also say they expect deals worth hundreds of millions of dollars to be concluded in Nairobi. In June, it hosted an auction where companies from Saudi Arabia bought more than 2.2 million tonnes of carbon credits. One project generating carbon credits in Kenya is BURN Manufacturing's production of clean cooking stoves to replace heavily polluting wood and charcoal-based fires.

Automating your savings helps you grow and increase your money over time. Typically, a good plan is to set up an individual savings account for each savings goal (like an account for travel, emergency fund, or down payment) and then automate deposits to each account on payday. Avoiding the temptation to spendThe hardest part about saving money is overcoming the temptation to dip into savings for non-essential purchases. By setting up automated transfers to your savings account, you create a barrier between your discretionary income and the money you have saved. But building the habit of saving can be the best thing that you can do for your financial journey, and automating it makes the habit much easier.
