The killings underscore the reality that evacuation zones and warning alerts from the Israeli military haven’t guaranteed safety for civilians in the densely populated Gaza Strip, where Palestinians have no safe place to escape Israeli bombs. In the early hours on Friday, Aaed Al-Ajrami and his nephew, Raji, received a phone call from an Israeli military official – warning him to get everyone he knows and head southwards immediately, the nephew told CNN. Despite following the instructions and successfully fleeing south of the evacuation zone, Aaed’s family was killed by an Israeli airstrike the next day. The next day, an Israeli airstrike in the area destroyed parts of the building where Aaed’s family sought refuge – killing him and 12 other members of his family, including seven children. “You can follow the orders so that you aren’t exposed to danger, but the danger will still reach you wherever you are.”CNN has reached out to the IDF for comment about the airstrike outside of the evacuation zone, including Deir Al Balah.

Opinion: Where the war goes from here

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. The war plays out on everyone’s screens, forcing people to confront cruelty and killing and to fear what comes next. “Hamas’ mission is, by definition, to end Israel, not to seek to establish a self-governed Palestinian state that peacefully coexists alongside the Jewish state. “An Israeli normalization deal with Saudi Arabia — the location of the two holiest sites in Islam — would be hugely symbolic and have real security benefits for Israel,” wrote Peter Bergen. “After all, almost exactly half a century ago, during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, two Arab states, Egypt and Syria, attacked Israel.

Yahya Sinwar was nicknamed "the Butcher from Khan Younis" for killing Palestinian collaborators. Israel Says Latest Strikes Killed Hamas Commanders

A strike on Gaza killed the head of Hamas’s aerial systems unit that was responsible for coordinating last Saturday’s assaults while another strike killed a commander who led the attack, the Israeli military said. Israel continues to target Mohammed Deif, the head of Hamas’s military wing, and Yahya Sinwar, the group’s leader in Gaza. “The face of evil in the end is Yahya Sinwar. He’s the mastermind behind all this,” said Richard Hecht, a spokesman for the Israeli military. “He’s a dead man walking.”

He’s now in charge of Hamas’ military wing, the Al Qassem Brigades. And on the ground, in private conversations, it’s been difficult to find people who are genuinely behind Hamas military campaigning. Men like El Deif, the bomb makers and decision takers, were hunted by Israel. Key to this change, too, was another major figure in Hamas’ military wing, Yahya Sinwar. I think this will spell the end of Hamas.”That may be a zero-sum option that not even the shadowy El Deif had guessed at.

Israel is reeling from the deadly Hamas terror attacks last weekend, with many looking for answers. The surprise assault exposed major shortcomings in Israel's feared military and security and intelligence apparatus. A top IDF officer said the military is to blame, but there are several other things that went wrong. And while a top Israeli officer has acknowledged that the military ultimately mishandled security, the country's troubles appear to run much deeper. This is the reality for Palestinians living in Gaza without the protection of a robust civil defense infrastructure. “In Gaza, we don’t have anything…you have nowhere to go, no bomb shelters, no refuge, you are in the street,” Baroud said. In Gaza, the call or text alerts are far from guaranteed and – at most – give residents a few minutes to evacuate. These warning systems are able to calculate the location where a rocket is projected to land and set off a siren in the targeted area, often giving residents advance notice to find shelter. With far less resources, Gaza hasn’t built anything comparable to the Israeli defense systems.

An Israeli army self-propelled howitzer fires rounds near the border with Gaza in southern Israel on Oct. 11, 2023. Israel's border communities have since been evacuated and the military said Tuesday it had regained control of the Gaza-Israel border, through which Hamas had launched its surprise offensive. Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak told CNBC's "Squawk Box" Wednesday that Israeli ground forces would take over the Gaza Strip in a matter of days. Israeli soldiers gather near Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) near Israel's border with Lebanon, northern Israel, October 9, 2023. During the Gaza War in 2014, Deif led Hamas's offensive strategy, the State Department said. Despite his pivotal role in some of Hamas's most notorious attacks, Deif remains an elusive figure. Israeli officials say the Hamas attacks have so far killed more than 1,200 Israelis, according to the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. One Hamas source told Reuters that Deif and Yahya Sinwar, another leader of Hamas in Gaza, made the call to prepare the attack on Israel. Israel, in response, formally declared war on Hamas on Sunday and has since led a nonstop bombardment of the Gaza Strip for the past several days.
