Pegula beat the 17th seed Keys in their only previous meeting last year and was considered as one of the U.S.'s brightest hopes after winning the Montreal title last month. "I've had so many amazing moments in New York," said Keys, who is playing in her 12th U.S. Open main draw. Keys broke her opponent's serve with a backhand winner in the second game of the first set and broke Pegula again on the fourth try in game six. Alcaraz downs Harris to reach US Open third round

Even while not at his best Alcaraz could rely on raw talent and a vast repertoire of shots to see off the 177th ranked South African. After the match Alcaraz focused on the positives, rating his effort as "great" but admitting to a letdown in the third set. "In the end, I think I played a pretty good match and will try to keep the same level." Under Arthur Ashe Stadium's bright lights Alcaraz found himself under even greater scrutiny after an unconvincing build-up to the season's final Grand Slam. There will be no room for such lapses in third round for Alcaraz with 26th seed Dan Evans waiting in the wings.

Top-ranked Americans Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe are also in action with both looking to bolster their hopes of becoming the first U.S. man to win a Grand Slam in 20 years. In the second round, a resurgent Wozniacki earned her first top-20 win in nearly five years with a straight-sets upset of 11th seed Petra Kvitova. "I'm a zombie because I have a flu," said Jabeur, adding that she had taken a break in July following her Wimbledon final defeat to stay fresh for the rest of the season. Jabeur said she had been struggling for about a week with the illness and was "taking a lot of medicine". Jabeur meets Czech Marie Bouzkova in the next round and is determined to continue her run. Reuters has reached out to U.S. Open officials about the illnesses and they said they were looking into it. And here is where things can get complicated: In the tennis world, at least, Ms. Riddle’s exposure is still partly tied to her boyfriend’s success. Many fans who take selfies with Ms. Riddle know her from “Break Point,” the Netflix series that follows the highs and lows of several rising tennis stars. Mr. Fritz has since failed to advance past the third round of any Grand Slam tournament. As such, the “Break Point” crew hasn’t spent much time with the couple for the scheduled second season, Ms. Riddle said. As Coco Gauff and Mirra Andreeva faced off at the U.S. Open on Wednesday, fans in the stands remarked about how old — really how young — they were while competing at the top of their sport. Gauff, who at 19 is not much older than the 16-year-old Andreeva, has for several years been a household name in tennis, ever since she made a run to the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2019. Her growing stardom means that she often finds herself playing in featured matches at the U.S. Open, in front of the most fans in person and in choice television slots. On Wednesday, that was in a 6-3, 6-2 win over Andreeva at Arthur Ashe Stadium, playing ahead of Novak Djokovic. It was a matchup, and a moment, that Gauff, a sixth-seeded American, controlled with ease while keeping a breezy but brisk pace.

The 20-year-old top seed from Spain was leading 6-2, 3-2 when Koepfer retired, having rolled his ankle at a grimace-inducing angle minutes into the match. Alcaraz will play Lloyd Harris of South Africa in the second round. "He's a great player, he has big shots so I have to be really focused on the match," said Alcaraz. Koepfer buried his head in his towel after Alcaraz forced him into a forehand error to convert on a break point chance in the seventh game. Koepfer fended off a pair of break point chances in the fifth game before solemnly walking to the net to resign.

The 19-year-old Gauff said she took a more aggressive approach into her second meeting with Andreeva after having to rally back to beat the Russian in three sets at this year's French Open. Andreeva, 16, has relished the Grand Slam stage in her debut season on tour having reached the third round at the French Open and fourth round at Wimbledon but was not able to conjure up similar magic in New York. But with his clinical dissection of Balazs, he served notice that he remains a real threat to claim his second U.S. Open title in three years. "I don't care it is normal Carlos and Novak are the biggest names right now," said Medvedev when asked if he felt overlooked. The Australian could prove a much trickier test having forced Medvedev to go three tough sets earlier this year in Doha. After losing to eventual champion Alcaraz in the Wimbledon semi-finals, Medvedev has had a quiet U.S. Open buildup, getting to the quarter-finals of the Canadian Open and the round of 16 a week later in Cincinnati. "It wasn't an easy match, she plays unbelievable and I'm not feeling my best today," Jabeur said in her on-court interview before the crowd sang "Happy Birthday" to her. While serving with a 4-3 lead Jabeur told the chair umpire she was having trouble breathing and then went on to lose the game as Osorio broke to get the match back on serve. A determined Jabeur dug deep and won three consecutive games to wrap up the opening frame in 59 minutes before leaving the Louis Armstrong Stadium court.
