REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/file photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Aug 24 (Reuters) - The dollar rose on Thursday as investors awaited for U.S. job data ahead of the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole symposium, while the Turkish lira rallied after a larger-than-expected central bank rate hike. Investors were cautious after softer-than expected data in Europe and the U.S. muddied the economic outlook sending the safe-haven dollar higher. "As the Jackson Hole symposium gets under way, market participants are looking for direction," said Isabel Albarran, Investment Officer at Close Brothers Asset Management. MORE COULD COMEElsewhere, the Turkish lira rallied, up 3% to 26.4040 against the dollar after the Turkish Central Bank hiked the 1-week repo from 17.5% to a much-larger-than expected 25%. Turkey's central bank embarked on a tightening cycle in June after President Tayyip Erdogan appointed former Wall Street banker Hafize Gaye Erkan as governor.

A group of hedge funds' favorite stocks trounced the broader market, thanks to the strength of mega-cap tech, according to Goldman Sachs. It then compiled a basket of the most popular long positions, dubbed Goldman's Hedge Fund VIP basket, comprising 50 stocks that most frequently appear among the largest 10 holdings of hedge funds. The VIP basket has returned 22% this year as of mid-August, outperforming the S & P 500 , which was up 15% during the same period. The largest tech stocks — Amazon , Microsoft , Google parent Alphabet and Meta Platforms — remain the most popular hedge fund long positions at the end of June. Big artificial intelligence winner Nvidia was the fifth-most popular stock among hedge funds.

Some analysts warn that rising yields could push up borrowing costs, causing the economic slowdown investors are now betting against. The key question is how much further bear steepening the market needs to see for "investors to become nervous," he added. In 2018, for instance, the curve shifted to a bear-steepening dynamic as the economy appeared to hold up well despite the Fed's tightening. Risks remain, however, warned Jonathan Cohn, head of US Rates Desk Strategy at Nomura Securities International, including the pain for companies refinancing debt at higher rates and China's weakening growth. BEARISH BETSSome investors are worried that Powell’s speech at the Fed's annual economic symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, could trigger a short squeeze.

The surprise move leaves the policy rate at its highest level since 2019, and sent the Turkish currency to its strongest level since mid-July. The bank has raised its one-week repo rate (TRINT=ECI) by 1,650 basis points since June. The lira had touched new all-time lows almost daily in recent weeks, including in the minutes before the policy decision. The central bank said that rising oil prices and a deterioration in inflation expectations suggests that inflation will end the year at the upper bound of its forecasts. The central bank has also selectively tightened credit.

Turkey’s central bank hiked its key interest rate by a surprisingly large 7.5 percentage points to 25% Thursday, signaling a new determination to address rebounding inflation as part of a broader policy U-turn. The poll, conducted last week, showed that interest rates were not expected to rise to 25% until the end of the year. The rate hike “sends a very strong signal that the [bank] is determined to rein in inflation and the initial market response is very positive,” said Piotr Matys, senior FX analyst at In Touch Capital Markets. Erdogan’s past drive to slash interest rates sparked a currency crisis in late 2021 and sent inflation above 85% last year. The currency is down about 68% in two years largely due to Erdogan’s previously outspoken opposition to high rates and influence over the central bank.

Mutual fund managers have been able to generate alpha outside of Big Tech this year, with some stocks contributing sizable gains, according to Goldman Sachs. Goldman found the large-cap core have struggled this year due to their underweight in the largest tech stocks, which have led the market rally. However, mutual fund managers were able to find winners elsewhere, Goldman said. "An improving stock picking environment has helped mutual fund PMs generate alpha elsewhere in their portfolios," Goldman strategists said in a note. Top gainers in mutual fund portfolios also included energy stocks Chevron , Exxon Mobil and NextEra Energy.

The purchase was aimed at broadening Goldman's client list beyond the ultra-rich, but the unit has remained a small part of the bank's wealth business. High net worth individuals - who would fall within the business Goldman is considering selling - typically have about $1 million to $10 million to invest. Goldman's wealth business has lagged behind rivals, including Morgan Stanley (MS.N), where CEO James Gorman built the wealth management arm through a series of acquisitions that generate steady income from fees. The bank plans to grow its core wealth business serving ultra-high-net-worth clients, reiterating aspirations from its investor day in late February.

Oil prices could still fallFor consumers, the good news is that, outside of the risk of a bad hurricane season, Citi is bearish on oil prices. The Wall Street bank’s baseline forecast is that oil prices will drop in the coming months, a scenario that would cool gas prices. “It’s something we certainly keep a close eye on,” a White House official told CNN earlier this week. As recently as Memorial Day and July 4th, consumers were saving big on gas prices when measured against the same point last year. “Energy markets are volatile and gas prices can fluctuate,” the White House official told CNN.

The main requirements under the federal RICO law are at least two underlying crimes and participation in a criminal enterprise over a long period of time. WHY ARE PROSECUTORS USING RICO? That means prosecutors would not necessarily have to prove Trump personally broke the law but knowingly coordinated with others who did. RICO cases are inherently more complex because prosecutors must first prove the existence of a criminal enterprise. Prosecutors will need to prove that Trump and his co-defendants worked together towards a common criminal purpose, which is not always as straightforward as proving an underlying RICO crime.

New York CNN —The Justice Department announced on Monday that UBS has agreed to pay $1.4 billion in penalties for allegedly defrauding investors by selling mortgage-backed securities that blew up during the Great Recession. The settlement resolves the final case brought by the DOJ to investigate the role of Wall Street firms in the 2008 financial crisis. In a statement, UBS described the agreement as a settlement of a “legacy matter” and said it has been fully provisioned in prior periods. Other Wall Street firms including Barclays, Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs were previously hit by even larger fines to reach toxic mortgage settlements with the US government. All told, prosecutors say they leveled more than $36 billion in fines for conduct that fueled the 2008 financial crisis, including from banks and ratings firms.

Toyota has big plans when it comes to electric vehicles — and investors are underappreciating its potential in the market, according to Goldman Sachs. The Wall Street bank suggests that Toyota's plans would raise its share of the global EV market to 8.6% in 2026 and 10.5% in 2030 from negligible levels today. "We think this strategy is grounded on Toyota's robust finances and ability to exercise control over its supply chain thanks to vertical integration," the Goldman analysts said. Goldman Sachs expects shares of Toyota Motor to rise by 15% to 2,800 Yen ($19.4) in the next 12 months. "This will not only allow it to utilize existing assets but also shorten the lead time from development to the start of production and the time to market," the Goldman analysts said.
