Uninsured Americans can now get the newest Covid vaccines for free at certain locations across the country, just days after U.S. regulators greenlit those shots for most people. That filter specifically shows locations participating in the Biden administration's Bridge Access Program, which will provide free Covid vaccines and treatments to uninsured people through December 2024. The Bridge Access Program aims to maintain broad access to Covid products after a big shift in how the U.S. covers them. Previously, the federal government purchased Covid vaccines directly from manufacturers at a discount to distribute to all Americans for free. Meanwhile, the Bridge Access Program is aiming to fill the gap for the estimated 30 million uninsured Americans.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday said in the face of traditional retail's "unrelenting crunch," investors should look into retailers that are able to perform well in the face of continued inflation. "I wish I could tell you to buy the beaten down retailers, but the one thing I know is that buying best of breed is the way to go, and at this stage in the retail world, there are only three best of breed general merchants, and they are Walmart, Costco and Amazon," Cramer said. To Cramer, retailers and suppliers are in a fight about who eats the cost of inflation. He added that at Walmart, sometimes the generic offering is right next to the branded offering, with seemingly little difference between the two except that one has a lower price. Price pressure and convenience are driving consumers to Amazon, especially its Prime service, Cramer added.

US pharmacy chains gear up to administer updated COVID shots

REUTERS/Kamil Krzaczynski/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 13 (Reuters) - Drugstore chains CVS Health (CVS.N) and Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA.O) said on Wednesday that updated COVID-19 vaccines would be available at their stores as soon as this week. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director on Tuesday signed off on broad use of updated COVID-19 vaccines, arming a push to align the next round of shots more closely with the circulating variant of the virus, much like annual flu shots are designed. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved an updated vaccine made by Pfizer (PFE.N) and its German partner BioNTech (22UAy.DE) as well as one by Moderna (MRNA.O) for people ages 12 and above. The agency has also authorized the shots for emergency use in children ages 6 months through 11 years. Walgreens said it would start taking appointments for the updated vaccines from Monday, but could begin earlier appointments as stores receive vaccines this week.

FDA warns CVS, others against selling unapproved eye products

CVS Health logo is seen displayed in this illustration taken, May 3, 2022. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 12 (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday warned eight companies, including pharmacy giants CVS Health Corp (CVS.N) and Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA.O), against manufacturing or marketing unapproved eye products. Some of the these eye products were labeled to contain silver, the FDA said, adding that long-term use of drugs containing silver can cause some areas of the skin and other body tissues, including in the eye, to permanently turn gray or blue-gray. CVS and Walgreens said they have stopped the sale of the unapproved eye drops, and that customers who purchased these products could return them for a full refund. The FDA warned that failure to correct the violations may result in legal action, including product seizure and court orders requiring the companies to stop manufacturing and distributing an unapproved product.

In an interview with Insider, the head of Walgreens Health shared his vision for the business. It spent $5.2 billion to buy a majority stake in the primary-care company VillageMD and invested $3.5 billion to help the clinic chain acquire an urgent-care company. The company reported in June an operating loss of $1.4 billion in its Walgreens Health business in the first nine months of its fiscal year. Walgreens pharmacists could work with VillageMD doctors to better care for patients with chronic health conditions, he said. The main ingredient used in many popular over-the-counter cold and allergy medications doesn't actually work to get rid of nasal congestion, an advisory panel to the Food and Drug Administration declared Tuesday. The FDA typically follows the advice of its advisory committees but it is not required to do so. Pulling phenylephrine from the market could also affect retail pharmacy chains, which rake in revenue from selling over-the-counter cold and allergy pills. Retail stores in the U.S. sold 242 million bottles of drugs containing phenylephrine last year, up 30% from 2021, according to data compiled by FDA staff. Yet FDA staff, in briefing documents posted ahead of the meeting this week, concluded that oral formulations of phenylephrine don't work at standard or even higher doses.

Treating Overdoses Over the Counter

The F.D.A.’s approval of Narcan, a nasal spray, in 2015 made naloxone easier to administer. So police officers and other emergency responders started to carry it to reverse overdoses they would have been powerless to stop before. But public health advocates have called for many more Americans to carry naloxone to try to stop overdoses. Greater availability of the medication is one of the most effective interventions against the drug crisis, experts have said. “Everyone should be thinking about putting this into their first aid kit,” Dr. Kevin Ban, Walgreens’s chief medical officer, told CNN.

Background: Pharmacy chains have been settling opioid claims. Three large pharmacy chains that compete with Kroger — Walgreens, CVS Health and Walmart — reached similar settlements last year totaling about $13 billion. The claims against Kroger and its competitors have focused on the role of their pharmacies in flooding communities with legal painkillers. Why It Matters: Opioid settlement money is funding recovery efforts. Kroger said on Friday that the opioid settlement agreement would not impede the merger.

During second-quarter earnings reports in August and September, nearly two dozen retailers said shrink has continued to weigh on profits. During its second quarter earnings call with analysts, the company said shrink was in line with the year-ago period. Over the last few quarters, more and more retailers have called out shrink as a drain on profits and blamed theft for those losses. Others that loosely blame shrink and theft for plummeting profits without providing much more explanation may be trying to obfuscate internal issues, said Lapinsky. Contrary to other retailers, shrink was the largest drag on Ulta's earnings during fiscal 2022, according to a securities filing.

Cramer identifies 'cracks' he sees in the market
  + stars: | 2023-09-06 | by ( Julie Coleman | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
CNBC's Jim Cramer told investors he sees "cracks" in the market, especially in the prospective earnings of some big name companies. He stressed that many of these cracks may be due to the time of year, with September being a historically down month for the market. Cramer noted cracks in the retail industry, highlighting the recent success of TJX , the parent company of TJ Maxx and Marshalls. Cramer stressed the cracks he sees in the auto industry, with the three leading U.S. carmakers potentially facing a strike. "The unions have a strike fund, which lasts a heck of a lot shorter than the pots of gold the auto companies have saved," Cramer said.

Tesco is giving all its frontline staff the chance to wear body cameras, The Mail on Sunday reported. Retail crime, including both theft and abuse of workers, is soaring in both the UK and US. "Crime is a scourge on society, and an insult to shoppers and retail workers," Tesco CEO Ken Murphy wrote in an opinion piece for The Mail on Sunday. He also demanded changes in the law, such as making abuse and violence towards retail workers a specific offence in itself. Other British grocery chains, including Sainsbury's, the Co-op, and Waitrose, have also offered body cameras to staff.

Downtown San Francisco’s office buildings have been quieted by some of the highest vacancy rates and slowest return-to-office trends in the country. Around nearly every corner, they’re seeking someone to lease 822 square feet of former coffee shop, or 5,446 square feet of empty bakery, or 12,632 square feet of what was once a Walgreens. Like much of the office space above it, the ground floor will probably have to be reimagined in San Francisco’s business district and other downtowns that have long taken for granted a captive audience of commuting consumers. Because who wants to return downtown when its most visible spaces have been darkened, boarded up and papered over? “And only one step above that are these sad stickers with happy smiling people on them.”

After losing nearly 30% this year, shares of CVS Health could see a comeback according to one popular metric. Conversely, a reading lower than 30 typically means that a stock is oversold and could be a signal of a possible buying opportunity. CVS Health is another one of the most oversold companies in the S & P 500. Competitor pharmacy chain Walgreens Boots Alliance was also on the oversold list, with just 5.9% of analysts rating the stock a buy. Chipmaker and artificial-intelligence leader Nvidia , Mastercard , and Cisco Systems are also among the most overbought companies in the S & P 500.
