ATMORE, Ala. — When Derrick Dearman entered Alabama’s execution chamber Thursday evening, he was the fifth man the state put to death this year. The difference between Dearman and the men who came before him is that he went to his death willingly. “I believe in the death penalty, but it might be more justice for him to spend the rest of his life in prison. Dearman went to the home and was told he could not stay the night. Dearman wrestled a pistol away from Justin Reed as Reed tried to defend himself and Chelsea Reed.

Courtesy Elena and Vanessa RobustelliPayne’s death came as a shock to thousands of One Direction fans, known as Directioners, who did not expect to lose their idol at such a young age. It’s just shocking, and I cried a little bit last night because I was sad for my teenage self.”Olivia Hagans, top center, said she met her best friends through the One Direction community. Some Directioners compared Payne’s death to the death of John Lennon for Beatles fans, citing the similarities between the fervor around the bands and the intense support from their supporters. Logan Hill, 27, said the community of fans was “the most important thing” that came from the band’s existence. Directioners used to use the platform to interact with the band, get it trending online and organize as fans.

Michelle Lujan Grisham said she will not renew a public health order that temporarily banned carrying firearms in public parks and playgrounds in Albuquerque, the state's largest city. Lujan Grisham said in a news release Wednesday that more than 1,700 firearms were collected in gun buybacks over the past year because of the order. So there’s no way we could enforce that order.”Lujan Grisham issued the temporary order, originally a 30-day ban, in September 2023 after an 11-year-old boy was shot and killed in an Albuquerque park. In addition to restricting firearms in public parks and playgrounds in Bernalillo County, it strengthened oversight of firearm sales and implemented wastewater testing for fentanyl in public schools. In 1997, Walter Johnson stood before Judge Frederic Block in a Brooklyn federal courtroom after being convicted of robbery, cocaine possession and witness tampering, just the latest in a troubling series of crimes that involved guns, drugs and violence. Judge Block called Mr. Johnson, a street legend known as King Tut, “a classic example of a person who has to be incapacitated so society is protected against you.” Then he hit Mr. Johnson with five life sentences. On Thursday, Judge Block called the punishment he imposed 27 years ago too harsh, the product of ill-considered laws and his own inexperience. He freed Mr. Johnson, who hours later walked out of prison and back into society. “Judges gain insights that with the passage of time only can come with experience on the bench and their judicial maturation,” Judge Block wrote in his decision granting Mr. Johnson’s petition for release.

WASHINGTON — A team of federal prosecutors led by special counsel Jack Smith said in a filing Wednesday that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump bears responsibility for the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. In a filing responding to Trump's attempt to dismiss the case, Smith's team said it "is incorrect" for Trump's team to assert that the superseding indictment returned against Trump in August does not show that Trump bears responsibility for the events of Jan. 6. "Those allegations link the defendant’s actions on January 6 directly to his efforts to corruptly obstruct the certification proceeding," Smith's team wrote. Special counsel Jack Smith delivers remarks on an unsealed indictment against Trump on June 9, 2023. The latest filing comes after the Supreme Court's decision on presidential immunity gutted part of Smith's case against Trump.

CNN —Twin bomb threats hit Indian airliners on opposite sides of the globe on Tuesday, forcing an emergency landing in the Arctic and fighter jets to scramble in Asia – the latest in a series of similar hoax scares for the country’s airlines. On Tuesday, an Air India flight from New Delhi to Chicago made an emergency landing in Iqaluit, Canada’s northernmost city. Air India flight 127 was the “subject of a security threat posted online” and diverted “as a precautionary measure,” the airline said. Multiple flights by Indian carriers have been delayed or diverted due to false bomb threats since Monday. The Air India emergency landing in Canada comes as tensions rise between the two countries after Canada expelled six Indian diplomats, including the high commissioner, on Monday.
