People with the group No Labels hold signs during a rally on Capitol Hill in Washington, July 18, 2011. More than 15,000 people in Arizona have registered to join a new political party floating a possible bipartisan "unity ticket" against Joe Biden and Donald Trump. No Labels, the nonprofit group actively working to field a third party ticket for president in 2024, doubled its annual revenue last year over 2021, collecting $21 million, nearly all of it from wealthy donors who gave $100,000 or more. Outgoing Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., has long been rumored to be among the possible candidates to top a No Labels unity ticket. That group has raised $1.4 million so far this election cycle, according to Federal Election Commission records.

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AP) — A high-profile Democratic prosecutor in northern Virginia who pursued progressive reforms and drew criticism from Republican Gov. Biberaj conceded a day after the Loudoun County Board of Elections finished counting all ballots. Late absentee and provisional ballots narrowed Biberaj's deficit from roughly 1,000 votes to just 300 votes out of more than 135,000 ballots cast. Anderson, who served as Loudoun's top prosecutor from 1996 through 2003, spent just $70,000 on his campaign, compared to more than $1.1 million spent by Biberaj, according to the Virginia Public Access Project. "I am honored to lead this office again as Commonwealth’s Attorney-Elect for Loudoun County and deliver on my promise of restoring transparency and protecting our community from violent crime,” he said in a written statement.

Tax loss harvesting is a staple of year-end planning. Bonds are ripe for tax loss harvesting in the wake of the Federal Reserve's rate-hiking cycle. Consider that the longer-dated iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) has a year-to-date total return of about -7.3%, while the shorter-term iShares Core US Aggregate Bond ETF (AGG) has a total return of roughly 0.7% in 2023, according to Morningstar. "Tax loss harvesting is a silver lining for some of the pain they've been feeling the last couple of years." The moderate West Virginia Democrat said Wednesday that he would never want to be a “spoiler” who contributed to getting any other candidate elected. Manchin said it would be “dangerous” to give Trump another term. “Because I Endorsed Big Jim Justice of West Virginia for the U.S. Senate, and he has taken a commanding lead, Democrat Joe Manchin has decided not to seek re-election. Manchin would have had a difficult path to reelection as the only remaining Democratic statewide officeholder in West Virginia, likely running against either GOP U.S. Rep. Alex Mooney or Gov. The mother of a 6-year-old who shot his first-grade teacher in a Virginia classroom was sentenced on Wednesday to one year and nine months in prison after pleading guilty in June to using marijuana while owning a firearm and making false statements about drug use. The sentencing of the 26-year-old mother, Deja Taylor, was the latest development in a shooting that shocked the country in January when the authorities detailed how a child had retrieved a gun from his home, put it in his backpack and brought it to Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Va. There, the authorities said, the boy pulled out the gun in a classroom, aimed it at his teacher, Abigail Zwerner, and fired. The bullet passed through her hand and struck her chest, causing serious injuries. Although recreational marijuana is allowed in Virginia, federal laws prohibit addicted or “unlawful” drug users from owning a gun.

The tale of the misprint, and the ever-increasing sale prices, began to make the Inverted Jenny famous enough to be a cultural reference. HENRICO, Va. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger announced Monday she will run for Virginia governor in 2025 instead of seeking reelection to the U.S. House next year. Spanberger, a three-term Democrat, made the announcement in a campaign video, highlighting the importance of lowering prescription drug prices, growing the middle class and easing inflation. Her decision not to seek reelection in the House could lead to a competitive Democratic primary in the 7th. Postal Service won her first congressional race in a district that had been held by Republicans for almost 50 years. Last month, former Virginia House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn announced she would not run for governor in 2025 and will instead run next year to represent the competitive northern Virginia congressional seat being vacated by a fellow Democrat, U.S. Rep. Jennifer Wexton.

Bronson’s propensity to run up debts and alienate supporters sank his young family into poverty. Had it not been for the busy and lucrative pen of their second daughter, Louisa May, the Alcott family might have disappeared into the footnotes of history. As it is, they remain a subject of fascination, for Louisa (1832-88) would produce not only the novels “Little Women” (1868) and “Little Men” (1871) but also short stories and brilliant nonfiction sketches. Manchin never defended the remark but was criticized by West Virginia Republicans for what his party’s nominee said. By 2022, coal mining employees in West Virginia made up nearly 30% of all coal employees in the country. John Deskins, director of the West Virginia University Bureau of Business and Economic Research, said 75% of West Virginia’s coal jobs were disappearing before coal production dropped because of mechanization. West Virginia Democratic Party Chair Mike Pushkin said Trump never fulfilled his promise. He said the state Democratic Party was branded “anti-jobs and anti-coal” because of environmental policies coming from the national party.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia's state House will soon have its first Black speaker in its more than 400-year history after the chamber's incoming Democratic majority on Saturday chose Del. Karen Davis, an animal-rights activist who led campaigns to recognize the dignity of chickens, turkeys and other farmyard fowl — and whose fervor was such that she compared the industrial slaughter of poultry to the Holocaust — died on Nov. 4 at her sanctuary for rescued chickens in Machipongo, Va. She was 79. United Poultry Concerns, the advocacy group Ms. Davis founded and led, announced that she died “surrounded by her beloved birds,” but did not cite a cause. The animal rights movement was well established when Ms. Davis became an activist in the 1980s. “In our culture, fowl is ignored by the animal protectionist community,” Ms. Davis said at a candlelight vigil in 1992 at a farm in Virginia where customers could reserve a Thanksgiving turkey. “We’re talking about a universe of pain and suffering that far exceeds virtually all other animals combined.”

A once-robust alliance of federal agencies, tech companies, election officials and researchers that worked together to thwart foreign propaganda and disinformation has fragmented after years of sustained Republican attacks. The most recent setback came when the FBI put an indefinite hold on most briefings to social media companies about Russian, Iranian and Chinese influence campaigns. "We're having some interaction with social media companies," Wray said. "The symbiotic relationship between the government and the social media companies has definitely been fractured." Tech companies are still sharing their findings with each other, a Meta spokesperson told NBC News.

It's a disruption that Johnson — just two weeks into his job running the House — has said he wants to avoid. “We're running up against the clock on Nov. 17, and we're obviously aware of that,” Johnson said this week, referring to the date that government funding expires. Democrats have made it clear they will not support any funding packages that include policy wins for conservatives. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, who the Democratic leader in the House, said they would not “pay a single, right-wing ransom demand” as part of a funding resolution. Democratic lawmakers are also eager to play up the House Republican divisions and to pin any blame for a shutdown squarely on the new speaker and his GOP colleagues.

Sen. Joe Manchin said his decision was one of the toughest he has had to make in his lifetime. Photo: Anna Moneymaker/Getty ImagesWASHINGTON—Sen. Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.) said Thursday that he won’t run for another term in the U.S. Senate, as he faced a tough re-election bid in a state that has turned more conservative during his tenure. The decision is expected to hurt Democrats’ effort to hold on to the Senate, which they currently control 51-49. West Virginia is seen as one of Republicans’ top pickup opportunities, along with Montana and Ohio, and Manchin was seen as the only Democrat who had a shot at holding on to the seat.

Ms. Anderson mentions the former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley as a viable alternative to Mr. Trump. But in terms of good fiscal governance and foreign policy, I believe that Ms. Haley is even more misguided than Mr. Trump. It is strategically savvy of them not to level any direct harsh criticism at Mr. Trump. Perhaps the reason they have not yet done so convincingly is that they are not running “against” Mr. Trump. Several of them are likely running for vice president, and that would preclude discussing their differences.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia announced Thursday that he won’t seek reelection in 2024, giving Republicans a prime opportunity to pick up a seat in the heavily GOP state. “I believe in my heart of hearts that I have accomplished what I set out to do for West Virginia," he said. New York CNN —A pair of Republicans leading powerful House committees are calling for the Department of Veterans Affairs to speed up efforts to decrease the agency’s reliance on China for medical supplies, CNN has learned. The Covid-19 pandemic laid bare a dangerous vulnerability in America’s medical supply chains that resulted in shortages of masks, respirators and other life-saving gear. “The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the national security and public health risks of failing to guarantee adequate medical supplies. As the biggest buyer of medical supplies among federal agencies, it has considerable influence. Congress has attempted to take steps to boost the resilience of the nation’s medical supply chain by easing dependence on goods from less friendly nations like China.

Why does Biden support Israel so wholeheartedly? The first is a lifelong understanding of Jewish history and the indispensable role a Jewish state plays in countering millennia of antisemitism. For Biden, these imperatives – strategic, historic, moral, emotional – come together in the war between Israel and Iran-backed Hamas, a terrorist group founded on the goal of destroying Israel. Biden learned Jewish history at his father’s foot. Where many see a war between Israel and Hamas, Biden sees something much larger.
