After all of these years, after all of the rather incredible rallies and gains in the stock market from so many groups, the typical morning still starts with a bevy of negativity. We hear about OpenAI and its brilliant $167 billion valuation , but we don't see any stock available to public-market investors. I have been furious at myself for thinking the Chinese government couldn't do anything about the country's struggling stock market. The Chinese stock market has been rallying nicely since the stimulus announcements. In San Jose, a center of California’s housing crisis, one of the oldest and last remaining Japanese-owned farms in the state will be demolished to pave the way for urban housing. San Jose is home to one of only three existing Japantowns in the country and the only one built on agricultural roots. In July, the San Jose City Council voted to turn the Sakauye family’s 23-acre fruit orchard into a mixed-used development constituting nearly 1,500 apartment units and town houses. Vanessa Hatakeyama, the acting director of the Japanese American Museum of San Jose, said the Sakauye farm is a remnant of San Jose’s agricultural landscape — one that was built by Japanese immigrants — before it was transformed by the tech and suburban housing booms. As Donald Trump visits Butler, Pa., today for the first time since he narrowly survived an assassination attempt there, current and former Secret Service agents fear another security lapse. One law enforcement official told NBC News that the Secret Service is “stretched virtually to the breaking point.”“I hate to say it, they are going to hit rock bottom fast” said one former Secret Service agent. “The Secret Service is upside down on that, maybe operational 99% and 1% training," the former official said. Current and former officials are also concerned about a mass exodus of Secret Service personnel over the next 18 months. U.S. officials say that the challenges at the Secret Service will require a range of changes to ensure long-term stability.

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the country would not hesitate to use all available offensive forces including nuclear weapons if the enemy attempted to use force to encroach on its sovereignty, state news agency KCNA reported Friday. Kim criticized South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol for threatening to end the North Korean regime at a military day event on Tuesday, saying the comment showed which side was destroying regional security and peace. DPRK is short for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, North Korea’s official name. North Korea has for decades pursued a nuclear weapons program and is believed to have enough fissile materials to build dozens of such weapons. Kim said “the enemies’ threatening rhetoric, action, trick and attempt did not check the DPRK’s powerful military strength and will not take away our nuclear weapons forever,” KCNA reported.

While not identifying any specific or credible threats to the United States, the advisory comes ahead of Monday’s anniversary of the October 7th attack in Israel and calls by foreign terrorist groups for violence against the West, the agencies said. The advisory also comes as Israel carries out deadly strikes against Hezbollah headquarters in Lebanon, and as it weighs a response to Iran’s recent ballistic missile attack. The New York Police Department increased patrols on Monday, a law enforcement source told CNN. The agencies assessed that foreign terrorist organizations will likely continue to “exploit narratives” surrounding hostilities involving Israel, Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran, in order to incite lone attackers toward violence in the US. So-called “lone wolves,” who are not formally part of a terror group, present an especially serious challenge to law enforcement, security sources have previously told CNN.

Shares of Rivian Automotive dropped about 8% during premarket trading Friday after the electric vehicle startup delivered fewer vehicles in the third quarter than analysts had expected and lowered its annual production forecast for 2024. The company said the lower production target — down from 57,000 units to between 47,000 and 49,000 — was because of a "production disruption due to a shortage of a shared component" for its R1 vehicles and commercial van. "This supply shortage impact began in Q3 of this year, has become more acute in recent weeks and continues. As a result of the supply shortage, Rivian is revising its annual production guidance to be between 47,000 and 49,000 vehicles," the company said in a statement. A Rivian spokesman said the component causing the problem is part of its in-house motors, but he declined to disclose any further details.

Housing is one of many issues Vance, the Republican nominee, believes are rooted in the arrival of undocumented migrants in America. But many economists caution that connecting rising numbers of immigrants to housing costs is no simple thing. Other economists have noted links between immigrants and increased housing costs. Vance later shared two studies on housing and immigration that showed a link between increased immigration and rising housing costs — though each offered various caveats, including noting that the impact changes over time. Indeed, Zillow data shows a clear upward trend in Springfield rents this year compared with 2023.
