Sept 11 (Reuters) - A prolonged coordinated strike by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union against the Detroit Three automakers could cut production by thousands, potentially pushing up vehicle prices and exacerbating supply-chain disruptions, analysts said. New vehicle prices may rise by less than 2% if the strike lasts about two weeks, according to automotive consulting firm J.D. That would mean an end to the trend of cooling vehicle prices in recent months, at a time when inflation continues to pinch U.S. consumers. However, UAW president Shawn Fain rejected the idea that worker wages were responsible for auto prices going up in the last few years. In a video released on Thursday titled "Here's what the Big Three and the corporate media's NOT telling you about car prices," Fain said "corporate greed" was responsible for rising car prices.

In recent weeks, U.S. consumers have seen high-profile food recalls for an unappetizing reason: They're contaminated with foreign objects that have no place on a dinner plate. “Extraneous materials” triggered nine recalls in 2022 of more than 477,000 pounds of food regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service — triple the number of recalls tied to food contaminated with toxic E. coli bacteria. Trader Joe’s wouldn’t elaborate on how material got into the foods that led to its recent recalls. In recent years, firms have become increasingly cautious and are recalling products more frequently than before, said Nathan Mirdamadi, a consultant with Commercial Food Sanitation, which advises the industry about food safety. Consumers who find foreign materials in food should notify manufacturers, experts said, but also realize that recalls are likely to stick around.

Section 2 of the federal law says voting district lines can’t result in discrimination against minority voters, who must be given a chance to elect candidates of their choosing. Jones preliminarily ruled in 2022 that some parts of Georgia’s redistricting plans probably violate federal law, but the trial is needed to flesh out facts for a verdict. “The Voting Rights Act was designed for cases like this one," Lakin said. “If Georgia’s electoral system is not equally open to Black voters, what would have to change?" Tyson also renewed the state's argument that Georgia's maps were drawn to protect incumbents and to prioritize Republican majorities, motives that are legal under federal law.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo(Reuters) - Hormel Foods on Thursday cut its annual revenue and profit targets after missing quarterly results as the Skippy peanut butter maker wrestled with lower pork and turkey prices and sluggish demand in key market China. Segment profit from international operations tumbled 50% from a year earlier, with the company citing softness in China and lower branded export demand. Hormel Foods now expects annual adjusted earnings per share between $1.61 and $1.67, compared with $1.70 to $1.82 forecast earlier. CNN —Developing cannabis use disorder is relatively common in Washington state, one of the first states to fully legalize cannabis, and can even occur in people who only use medical marijuana, according to a new study. “There’s a perception that people who are using marijuana for medical reasons have a lower risk of a cannabis use disorder,” said lead author Gwen Lapham, assistant professor at Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine in Seattle. In addition, using both medical and recreational weed led to a more severe addiction than using medical marijuana alone, the study revealed. There are no current FDA-approved medications to treat cannabis use disorder, Lapham said, so behavior-based treatments or specialty addiction centers are the rule. A 2021 study found cannabis use disorder rose from 17.7% before marijuana was legalized in Canada to 24.3% after legalization.

Wayne Shorter Photo: Prime VideoAt the end of “Portal 1”—as episodes of “ Wayne Shorter : Zero Gravity” are designated—bassist Dave Holland recalls a comment by the late, great saxophonist-composer at the heart of the series. “I wonder what happens when you get to the end of the universe,” mused Mr. Shorter, whose life and career were spent traveling along the edge of the art-jazz cosmos; it seems perfectly reasonable that an astrophysicist ( Neil deGrasse Tyson ) should be among the prominent players in a Shorter story. And one of the intoxicating things about “Zero Gravity” is that writer-director Dorsay Alavi not only appreciates her subject’s space-child inclinations, but makes them an essential part of her musical, celestial, must-see documentary.
