The Missouri bird flu patient, who didn’t have known contact with poultry or dairy cows, was hospitalized in August and tested positive for the H5 virus. The CDC reported last week that a health care worker who cared for the patient developed mild respiratory symptoms and tested negative for influenza. Additionally, a person who lived with the Missouri patient also became sick on the same day. The second health care worker will be offered a blood test to determine if there are antibodies for the bird flu virus. The body found Wednesday near the Kentucky highway where a gunman opened fire Sept. 7 has been identified as the suspected shooter, Joseph A. Couch, officials said on Friday. An initial DNA test on remains believed to be those of Joseph Couch, the suspect in the Interstate 75 shootings, was inconclusive, but an autopsy confirmed the cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, state officials said. The soft tissue DNA test was “inconclusive due to extreme decomposition of the body,” and a further DNA test with material extracted from bone will be completed, the Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet said in a news release. The remains were found in deep brush by a highway exit in Laurel County, which is where London is and where the shootings occurred, state officials said. A couple livestreaming the search for Couch's body helped in the effort and the discovery, state police said. The DNA test from bone is expected to begin Friday and take 24 to 48 hours, the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet said.

Whooping cough cases climbing for decadesAs with many infectious diseases, cases of whooping cough dropped to unusually low levels during the pandemic as people limited social interactions and took other precautions to defend against Covid-19. In 2020, the US had about 6,000 cases of pertussis, and that number dropped even further in 2021 to roughly 2,000 cases. Whooping cough starts with symptoms that look a lot like a regular cold: a runny nose, sneezing, a low-grade fever and a tickly cough. That’s led to a hunt for better, more durable immunizations against whooping cough that also don’t cause as many side effects. In some ways, whooping cough is an ideal infection to test in human challenge models.
