"But SQ has also come under regulators' scrutiny (FinCen, CFPB) recently around its Cash App and Afterpay businesses. The president-elect has taken a pro-crypto stance during his time on the campaign trail , pledging to ensure that the federal government does not sell off its bitcoin holdings. A more favorable regulatory environment could also spell gains for Visa , which has rallied around 19% this year, according to Bernstein. "While it is unlikely that the DOJ pulls the case, it's possible that President-elect Trump names a more pro-business Head, who might be more amenable to a weaker settlement with Visa." So far on Wednesday, the stock market was largely ignoring the morning's inflation report because the main CPI reading was as economists expected. But a look deeper into the report spells trouble for a stock market — and president-elect — that are going to want the Federal Reserve to keep cutting rates throughout next year to keep fueling the bull market. However, in recent months, policymakers have focused more on the headline number, saying shelter costs, which have an outsized influence on core CPI, will come down. But core inflation has remained unusually stubborn, suggesting the Fed may have to hold rates higher than investors were previously anticipating. Core CPI showed a third straight monthly increase of 0.3%, bringing the annual rate to 3.3%.

The annual U.N. climate summit began on Monday in Baku, Azerbaijan, with many country delegations concerned that Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 5 will hinder progress to limit planetary warming. Trump has promised to again remove the United States, the world’s most significant historic greenhouse gas emitter, from international climate cooperation and maximize the country’s already record-high fossil fuel production. “For those of us dedicated to climate action, last week’s outcome in the United States is obviously bitterly disappointing,” Podesta said at the summit. “Let’s dispense with the idea that climate finance is charity,” he said at the Baku stadium. “An ambitious new climate finance goal is entirely in the self-interest of every nation, including the largest and wealthiest.”This year is on track to be the hottest on record.

Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer speaks at a press conference, during his visit to the European Commission headquarters on October 2, 2024 in Brussels, Belgium. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Britain would cut greenhouse gas emissions by 81% by 2035 as he committed the country to a more ambitious climate goal at the United Nations COP29 climate summit. The new goal is in line with a recommendation from a committee of climate advisers who said last month the target should exceed the current 78% cut to emissions, measured against 1990 levels. Starmer said the British public would not be burdened because of the new target, which excludes international aviation and shipping emissions. We're not going to start dictating to people what they do," he said.

TALLINN, Estonia Associated Press —A doctor accused of criticizing the war in Ukraine in front of a patient was convicted Tuesday of spreading false information about the Russian military and sentenced to 5 and a half years in prison, part of an unrelenting Kremlin crackdown on dissent. Akinshina alleged that Buyanova told her and her son that his father, a Russian soldier who apparently was killed in Ukraine, was a legitimate target for Kyiv’s troops and had blamed Moscow for the war. A video of the outraged Akinshina complaining about Buyanova was widely publicized, and chief of Russia’s Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin personally demanded a criminal case be brought against the doctor. Buyanova, who was born in western Ukraine, denied the accusation, insisting she never said what she was accused of saying. In her closing statement to the court, Buyanova said it was “painful” to read the accusations in the indictment, and broke down.

Nvidia 's still in early growth stages as artificial intelligence capabilities continue to progress, according to Redburn Atlantic. Analyst Timm Schulze-Melander initiated the stock with a buy rating and a price target of $178, which implies upside of 22.5%. Looking ahead, the analyst sees the AI powerhouse boasting 65% EBIT margin expansion and compound annual earnings growth of 38% between 2024 and 2030. The first growth driver is in accelerated computing, which aims to make AI data processing more efficient, Schulze-Melander said. The second factor behind Nvidia's growth case is the market's underestimation of demand for the company's products and services — even as rivals try to curb the chipmaker's dominance.
