Opinion: The Donald Trump and Hunter Biden surprises
  + stars: | 2023-07-30 | by ( Richard Galant | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +20 min
So it was remarkable Wednesday when the deal for Hunter Biden to plead guilty to two misdemeanors for his failure to pay taxes on time fell apart in a federal courtroom after the judge raised questions about it. Special counsel Jack Smith unexpectedly added a major allegation to the indictment charging former President Donald Trump with mishandling classified documents. The Trump and Hunter Biden developments underlined how America’s political climate is being shaped by what happens in the courts. This addition, an alleged surveillance tape conspiracy, almost reads like a spy novel.”“It features Trump employee and co-defendant Walt Nauta’s surprise clandestine trip to Florida. To W. James Antle III, it was the Hunter Biden plea deal snafu that brought to the forefront the “powerful split screen that drives” how Republican voters see the emerging 2024 presidential race.

CNN —Taylor Swift fans are in their record-breaking era. The “Swift Quake” has been compared to the 2011 “Beast Quake,” when Seattle Seahawks fans erupted after an impressive touchdown by running back Marshawn “Beast Mode” Lynch. The ensuing celebration was detected on the same local seismometer as the Swift concert, Caplan-Auerbach told CNN. Seismograms compare seismic activity from the 2011 'Beast Quake' with activity recorded during one of Taylor Swift's July concerts in Seattle. While the magnitude difference between “Beast Quake” and “Swift Quake” is only 0.3, Caplan-Auerbach said the Swifties have the Seahawks fans beat.

CNN —Travis Kelce made a play for Taylor Swift, but failed to score. The Kansas City Chiefs’ player shared on his podcast “New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce,” which he co-hosts with his brother, that he had attempted to slide his digits to the superstar singer during one of her concerts. Look what you made him do, Taylor! Swift is currently traveling with her “Eras Tour.”“If you’re up on Taylor Swift concerts, there are friendship bracelets, and I received a bunch of them being there, but I wanted to give Taylor Swift one with my number on it,” he said. When his brother asked if he meant his jersey number or his phone number, Travis Kelce quipped, “You know which one.”Speaking of numbers, the pair share 33 as that is both their ages.

CNN —The inimitable Taylor Swift has been on her record-breaking “Eras” tour and along the way, she’s played a different “surprise song” to change up the setlist at every concert. On Saturday during her Seattle concert, Swift’s surprise song was an acoustic version of “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things,” a “Reputation” album track that’s been long-speculated by Swifties to be about Kanye West, who has notoriously clashed in public with the singer through the years. It all started, as if we could forget, when the “Gold Digger” rapper notoriously interrupted Swift at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards while she was accepting the award for best female video. The artists clashed again in a 2016 dispute over whether or not the rapper cleared lyrics with Swift for his song “Famous,” wherein he calls Swift a “b—” and takes credit for her fame. Despite the fact that a handful of songs from the 2017 album are played regularly on the “Eras” tour, “Nice Things” serves as a very specific reminder of what may bubble up when the “Reputation (Taylor’s Version)” album eventually comes out.

When Taylor Swift released “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” this month, there was no doubt it would debut at No. The only questions were how forcefully it would smash records, how many mountains of vinyl it would sell and how far down the chart Swift’s catalog would push everybody else. 1 albums, but the only acts with more are Jay-Z (14) and the Beatles (19). Swift is the first living act to have four albums in the Top 10 since Herb Alpert in 1966. (Prince had five after his death in 2016, and for many years Billboard barred older “catalog” albums from reappearing on its main chart — a rule that was changed after Michael Jackson’s death, in 2009.)

Rachel Hunter could not wait to play her new vinyl recording of Taylor Swift’s “Speak Now.”After waiting weeks for its arrival, Ms. Hunter placed the orchid-colored vinyl with Ms. Swift’s face on its center on her record player, lifted the needle and let it play. But instead of Ms. Swift’s catchy choruses, acoustic guitar and banjo strums, another woman’s voice came out. “I quit seeing people, quit looking at the flakes of flesh and dancing organisms,” an echoing voice said, without music in the background. Maybe there was something wrong with the speed, Ms. Hunter thought, or maybe it was one of Ms. Swift’s notorious Easter eggs. I was by myself,” Ms. Hunter recalled.

Ticketmaster has once again cracked under the weight of a Taylor Swift ticket sale — this time in France. As French fans prepared on Tuesday to purchase tickets to six concerts in May and June 2024 on Swift’s Eras Tour — four shows in Paris, two in Lyon — Ticketmaster’s website displayed a gigantic queue of customers ready to buy; one screenshot appeared to tell a fan that 1,023,504 shoppers were in line ahead of them. Soon, Ticketmaster announced that sales for those shows had been placed on “pause.” The company gave no explanation, but said that a new on-sale time would be announced, and that “all codes not already used will remain valid.” But some fans’ social media posts seemed to show technical errors on Ticketmaster’s website, including a progress icon that “keeps spinning and spinning and spinning,” as one fan — speaking English with an American accent, but with 762 euros’ worth of tickets in their shopping cart — put it. Representatives of Ticketmaster and its corporate parent, the concert giant Live Nation Entertainment, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

London CNN —Ticketmaster has created more bad blood with Taylor Swift fans after its website glitched Tuesday, preventing thousands of Swifties from buying tickets for the singer’s upcoming concerts in France. Ticketmaster said on Twitter Tuesday that it had “put on hold” ticket sales for four dates of Swift’s hugely popular Eras Tour in Paris, including two dates in Lyon, both scheduled for spring next year. Responding to Ticketmaster’s tweet, one Twitter user said she had been “waiting hours.”“Will the ticket sales commence again today? It’s a problem Swift fans know all too well: The ticketing site crashed in November after millions of people flocked to the platform to try to snag Eras Tour tickets. In March, Ticketmaster ran into trouble again when some fans of the Eurovision Song Contest found they were unable to access the platform.

CNN —As Swifties and others rejoice at the release of Taylor Swift’s “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version),” a reissue of the star’s third studio album from 2010, one previously unreleased track has some scratching their heads. “When Emma Falls in Love,” one of the “from the vault” songs in the album rerelease, is gaining traction online as being about Oscar-winning actor Emma Stone, a known friend of Swift’s from the time “Speak Now” was initially written, around 2008-2010. Stone notably has taken her mother Krista to various awards shows and public events, per Entertainment Weekly.

CNN —A woman was arrested outside Taylor Swift’s Rhode Island home on July 3, just one month after an Indiana man was charged with stalking and harassing the star and allegedly sending her threatening messages. Police did not confirm the Westerly home belonged to Swift, but the company listed on property records has the same mailing address as Swift’s management company in Nashville. According to court records, the woman will be arraigned on July 14. CNN has reached out to reps for Taylor Swift but has not yet heard back. Taebel has been accused of sending threatening messages from March to May of this year to Swift, her team and management.

“Speak Now,” from 2010, was Taylor Swift’s third album, and it is now the third to be rereleased as a rerecorded “Taylor’s Version.” But all along, the album was a declaration of independence: It was the first she wrote entirely on her own, as a rebuttal to critics — perhaps like the one she cuts down on the sugary, spicy “Mean” — who suggested that Swift’s co-writers had a bigger hand in her previous successes than she’d let on. “Speak Now” remains one of Swift’s best and most sharply penned albums: The line “You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter,” from the chorus of the great opening track “Mine,” is often held up as an example of Swift’s lyricism at its most expertly concise. But “Speak Now” is an album of excesses, too; some of them are glorious — like the epic kiss-off “Dear John” or the romantic grandiosity of “Enchanted” — and some of them are the authentic artifacts of a 19-year-old’s somewhat myopic sensibility. “Mean,” which punches down, is guilty of that, and so is the acidic rocker “Better Than Revenge,” which has the most significantly revised lyrics in a “Taylor’s Version.” “He was a moth to the flame, she was holding the matches,” Swift sings on this 2023 update, a clumsier and less direct lyric than the original: “She’s better known for the things that she does on the mattress.” The change is unfortunate, and perhaps the beginning of a slippery slope of self-editing. The previous lyric was sanctimonious and nasty, yes, but it was also a historical document of Swift’s point of view at 19, and that of many young women who, being raised in a misogynistic society, are taught to blame the other girl before they learn how to curse “the patriarchy.” LINDSAY ZOLADZ

CNN —Taylor Swift signed onto a lucrative touring partnership with FTX before its collapse, but FTX pulled out of the arrangement, according to a person familiar with the discussions. Bankman-Fried has been accused of orchestrating one of the biggest financial frauds in US history, allegedly costing investors billions of dollars and improperly using customer funds from his cryptocurrency exchange, FTX. But a person familiar with the Swift discussions said the artist’s side had agreed to a $100 million tour sponsorship deal, but the deal was never finalized due to hesitation on FTX’s side. Other celebrities, including Tom Brady, Gisele Bundchen, Steph Curry, and Naomi Osaka, signed deals with FTX, which declared bankruptcy last fall. Brady and Bundchen also held stakes in FTX that were likely entirely wiped out.

On the night of June 10 at the majestic Gorge Amphitheater in George, Wash., on the lip of the Columbia River, the 79-year-old singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell played her first headlining show in 23 years. Her appearance had the air of a comet’s return: rare, breathlessly awaited and well worth camping out all night. That many concertgoers had traveled long distances made the experience feel all the more like a Mitchell song — perhaps one of the poetic highway travelogues recorded on her 1976 album “Hejira,” or even one of the romantic, intercontinental voyages she sang about on her 1971 landmark “Blue.” It was a crowd dotted with tie-dye and graying braids, yes, but also one full of lifelong friends reunited, mothers and children bonding over intergenerational musical tastes and enough homemade Mitchell T-shirts to rival Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. As Mitchell said to the adoring crowd as it held glowing cellphone lights aloft, paraphrasing one of her most memorable songs, “You’re stardust, and golden.”

Taylor Swift is an unlikely public transit icon

New York CNN —Taylor Swift, public transit savior? Public transit systems across the United States are getting a much-needed, if temporary, boost from Taylor Swift fans flooding trains, buses and subways to her sold-out Eras Tour. As transit agencies scramble to recover from the pandemic, transit experts say all those Swifies taking mass transit offer lessons for policymakers on how to adapt to the post-pandemic world. Philadelphia’s SEPTA system and New Jersey Transit also got a boost from concertgoers taking mass transit to Swift shows. But public transit agencies still have yet to fully recover from the impact of the pandemic.

In particular, as I’ll explain, the real puzzle here is why Taylor Swift doesn’t make even more money. Inspired in part by the work of my late former colleague Alan Krueger, I have in fact weighed in on Taylor Swift in historical perspective before. So, Taylor Swift makes a lot of money. But on the surface, that’s not what’s happening with Taylor Swift or Beyoncé. They’re making huge sums not mainly from record or streaming royalties but from concerts — which is, by the way, normal.

A move to ‘end surprise fees’With inflation still a potent political issue, President Biden is stepping up his war on so-called junk fees. At the White House on Thursday, he will host a panel of executives from several companies, including Airbnb and Live Nation, which drew outrage from consumers over its botched ticket sales for Taylor Swift’s tour last year. The companies are expected to announce new efforts to “end surprise fees,” the White House said, including through price-transparency commitments and other ways of fully disclosing upfront costs to consumers. The administration hopes that the changes will be adopted by companies across a wide array of industries, including live events and travel. In his State of the Union address in February, he denounced the added costs: “I know how unfair it feels when a company overcharges you and gets away with it.”

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour is, by most measures, a career peak for the pop star. Anything juicy you want to ask me?”
