Median prices for nearly every type of child care in New York City have shot up since 2017, according to state surveys of providers. And the workers who provide child care are reeling from high costs and are leaving the industry. Many make just over minimum wage, leaving them barely able to afford to stay in New York City or pay for care for their own children. Interviews with more than three dozen parents, nannies, day care providers and experts revealed a potentially devastating crisis for the future of New York City. In recent years, only the astronomical cost of housing has presented a greater obstacle to working families than the cost of child care, experts said.

The district is a Democratic stronghold Democratic strategists predict their party will be able to retain. A previous special election in which the Republican candidate lost by a wide margin may be why the GOP hasn’t drained its coffers to try to flip the seat, said Trevor Southerland, House Democratic campaign strategist. Several Democrat-led initiatives, such as whole home repair and broader protections for LGBTQ+ people, were critical pieces of legislation that didn’t move until Democrats reclaimed control of the state House earlier this year, she said. But the Legislature remains politically divided, with a firm Republican majority in the Senate that has sought to advance its own priorities, including school vouchers and constitutional amendments. She previously ran for the state House in 2000 but lost to the Democrat seeking reelection.

I use quotation marks, because merit aid is granted to half the students at public colleges and 84% at private colleges. Today the average merit-aid discount at private colleges is $23,000 — leaving the student to cover the remaining $30,000 or $40,000. At four-year public colleges, tuition now accounts for 52% of operational revenue, versus 48% from state funding. To make college more accessible, we need to make greater public investments — at both the state and federal levels — in higher education. James S. In August, incandescent bulbs were largely banned in the US and can no longer be sold or made. Ahead of the ban, Kevin Szmyd spent $1,700 on a lifetime supply of incandescent bulbs, about 3,500. Ahead of new regulations going into effect, Szmyd built up a collection of about 3,500 of the light bulbs. On August 1, the manufacture and sale of incandescent light bulbs was effectively banned in the US. Amanda CortinaThe new rules only allow light bulbs that meet a certain level of efficiency.

But for older adults, our towns and cities are filled with obstacles — stairs, unsafe sidewalks and crossings, inadequate lighting — that grow increasingly difficult for them as they age. Alberto Lau, 78, San DiegoDr. Hong responds: Busy streets and intersections can be challenging for older adults to navigate. Additionally, installing more crosswalks and making them more visible can make it easier for older adults to cross the street safely. Yet more and more older adults need the kind of high-quality transportation that can reliably get them from one place to another. This can be especially important for older adults, who may have slower reaction times or difficulty seeing oncoming traffic.

Opinion | Appeasing Donald Trump Won’t Work

There was never any way to remove Trump from American politics through the Democratic Party alone. Rather than remove Trump from American politics by convicting him in the Senate after his second impeachment, Republicans punted their responsibilities to the American legal system. (In his most recent newsletter, my colleague Ross Douthat makes a powerful case that only politics can solve the problem of Donald Trump.) First, there is the simple political fear of losing a House or Senate seat. In polarized, gerrymandered America, all too many Republican politicians face political risk only from their right, and that “right” appears to be overwhelmingly populated by Trumpists.

A Watch ‘Made in the U.S.A.’
  + stars: | 2023-08-09 | by ( Kathleen Beckett | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
The boast was big: Joshua Nathan Shapiro, founder of the watch brand J.N. Shapiro, declared that its Resurgence watch is the first timepiece made in the United States in more than half a century. “There hasn’t been a watch totally made in the U.S. since Hamilton watches closed down in 1969” and moved to Switzerland, Mr. Shapiro said. His company, based in Torrance, Calif., makes 148 of the watch’s 180 components, and most of the others are provided by U.S.-based companies, a tally that Mr. Shapiro said met the Federal Trade Commission’s standard that “all or virtually all” parts of a product must be made in the country before it may use the label Made in the U.S.A. (The label is on the Resurgence’s movement, he said.)

This was the case for Ben Shapiro, who was so irate that he set alight Barbie dolls worth an estimated $69. "The 2023 Barbie movie, unfortunately, neglects to address any notion of faith or family, and tries to normalize the idea that men and women can't collaborate positively (yuck)," she continued.

Elon Musk appeared to join in the criticism around Gerwig's "Barbie" in a tweet. "Barbie" may be storming the box office, but not everyone is a fan of Greta Gerwig's new pink-obsessed epic. "It you take a shot every time Barbie says the word "patriarchy", you will pass out before the movie ends," Musk said on Twitter, in response to a user's meme. Representatives for Musk did not respond to Insider's request for further comment with an answer that addressed the question. Last month, he told users that terms like "cisgender" and "cis" were considered "slurs" on Twitter.
