Here's a look at the steps to come for writers, and for the actors whose strike continues. In the last writers strike, in 2008, board members voted two days after a deal was reached, and members voted two days after that. But while the show's joke writers will be free to return, many of their usual guests will not, with the ongoing actors strike bringing limits on such appearances. HOW LONG WILL THE ACTORS STRIKE LAST? It was three months into the writers strike before the AMPTP reached out to begin negotiations, and the initial talks sputtered after a just a few days.

I've had an emergency fund since I was in college, and it's saved me multiple times. At the time, my emergency fund wasn't much more than $300 itself, but that was enough to get me through. I still wanted to do what I could to support the household, however, and my emergency fund allowed me to help with those costs. Having an emergency fund in place allowed me to have a financial foundation to make everything else work. Having the emergency fund allowed me to make tough life choices without the fear of financial repercussions.

Members of the Writers Guild of America East are joined by SAG-AFTRA members as they picket at the Warner Bros. The Writers Guild of America said Monday that the union will resume negotiations with Hollywood studios on Wednesday as a shutdown of productions across the TV and movie business drags on. The union told its members to continue joining picket lines as the talks resume. In a first for visual effects workers, Marvel Studios VFX artists voted unanimously last week to join the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees union. Elsewhere, actor Drew Barrymore and comedian Bill Maher faced widespread criticism when they announced the return of their talk shows despite the WGA strike.

Biden signed into law a bill allowing student-loan borrowers who combined balances with a spouse to separate their loans. They wouldn't owe payments, and if approved for administrative forbearance, their interest rates would be set to zero. Brigid, a 55-year-old borrower with spousal loans, told Insider she's experienced a similar dilemma. However, because of the strict nature of spousal loans, she would also have to meet the hardship requirements by, for example, also having cancer in order to receive the deferment. But she's been unable to receive administrative forbearance, and she's frustrated borrowers with spousal loans are blocked from opportunities federal borrowers are receiving.

Former President Donald Trump won't have his day in court in October a Georgia judge ruled Thursday, saying the high-profile defendant could sever his case from two co-defendants who want to move more quickly. Trial for two defendants – lawyers Kenneth Chesebro and Sidney Powell – will go ahead as scheduled Oct. 23. Those two invoked their right to a speedy trial, but other defendants have not yet done so. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis argued in a filing Tuesday night to try all 19 defendants at once. Several of the defendants, including Chesebro, Powell, former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani and former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, want to be tried separately.

VMware employees received an email this week laying out what their fates could be when Broadcom closes its $61 billion acquisition of the cloud computing and virtualization company. Sutter had cautioned that employees should "expect a feeling of acceleration" as the close date approaches and that Broadcom is "driving the playbook," the email said. According to the email, VMware employees will have one of three options for their employment status: receive a Broadcom offer, a transitional role offer, or a severance package. VMware is aiming to notify employees of their status by mid to late October, but it could be later or after the acquisition closes, the email said. The target for notifying employees of their status is mid-late October, but it could be later or even after close.

"We are making bold decisions to meet our commitments to our shareholders," Fraser, 56, said in a statement. The latest changes have already eliminated 35 committees, Fraser said, citing an example of efforts to reduce bureaucracy. Job cuts are expected, but the bank did not estimate the number of positions being eliminated or the financial impact, sources familiar with the matter said. "Investors are only going to give Citigroup credit for hard numbers meeting their goals," said Eric Compton, banking analyst at Morningstar. New York CNN —Google confirmed it will lay off hundreds of staff members who helped recruit and hire employees, as Silicon Valley continues its cost-cutting efforts. “To ensure we operate efficiently, we’ve made the hard decision to reduce the size of our recruiting team.”The layoffs were earlier reported by Semafor and CNBC. Google also said the recruiting cuts are not part of any wider layoffs, and that affected employees will be supported with severance offers and other benefits. Some Google recruiters for the company’s cloud, user experience, software engineering and other teams posted on LinkedIn, noting they had been affected by the layoffs. As of the end of 2022, Alphabet had 190,234 employees, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Donald Trump on Wednesday offered to "exchange" his right to a speedy trial in his Georgia election-conspiracy case for an Atlanta judge ruling that would have the former president tried separately from 18 other defendants. Trump's co-defendant Mark Meadows, who served as his White House chief of staff, shortly afterward filed an identical offer waiving a speedy trial in exchange for his own case being tried separately. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee has yet to rule on the severance requests that Trump, Meadows and 10 other defendants have filed. It is by no means clear that McAfee would grant severances based on waivers of speedy trial. Trump and the other defendants have the absolute right to a speedy trial in the case.

The show prompts viewers to wonder: What’s more chilling? The uncanny notion of a supernatural office-wide conspiracy? The latter portion allows him to access his retirement income before the age of 59 and a half without incurring a 10% penalty. The stock exposure in that account is mainly through the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV), where he has about $1 million invested. New York CNN —LGBTQ dating app Grindr ended its remote work policies and forced employees to relocate. The CWA also said the return-to-work policy was retaliatory and in response to a union drive at the company. Just two weeks prior to Grindr’s policy change, a majority of employees filed to organize a union. “Rather than recognize the union, the company issued a new return-to-office policy requiring staff to relocate or quit,” the CWA said in a statement. Seventy-one percent of employers that are mandating their on-site work policy reported difficulty retaining workers, according to the survey.

Twitter acquired Squad, a screen sharing app, in 2020. Twitter acquired Squad at the end of 2020, in a cash and stock deal worth $36 million, Sutin said. The other founder of the app is Esther Crawford, who became a director at Twitter after the acquisition. Squad's rise in popularity "caught the attention" of Twitter, according to the lawsuit, and it was acquired not long after. Racial and class segregation have also long shaped and limited access to public places. "The fundamental rule of public space is that what attracts people most is other people." So it's counterproductive to stop responsible drinkers from enjoying themselves in parks, at street fairs, and in other public places. Here are takeaways from Wednesday’s hearing:Judge skeptical of a quick and joint trialMcAfee expressed skepticism about Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ desire to hold a joint trial for all 19 defendants in October. “It just seems a bit unrealistic that we can handle all 19 (defendants) in 40-something days,” McAfee said. Trump is at the center of the Fulton County prosecutors’ alleged conspiracy, even as they charged 18 other co-defendants for taking part in efforts to overturn the 2020 election result. Special counsel Jack Smith took a different approach in his federal election subversion case, charging Trump alone and including six unindicted co-conspirators – several of whom are now Trump’s co-defendants in Fulton County. Scott Grubman, an attorney for Chesebro, suggested Trump’s presence in the Fulton County case could cloud how a jury views the other defendants.

REUTERS/Gonzalo Fuentes/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 30 (Reuters) - A California federal judge has refused to dismiss a lawsuit accusing X, the social media service formerly called Twitter, of disproportionately laying off older workers when Elon Musk acquired the company last year. Zeman, for example, claims X laid off 60% of workers who were 50 or older and nearly three-quarters of those who were over 60, compared with 54% of employees younger than 50. The judge dismissed a claim that X intentionally targeted older workers for layoffs, but gave Zeman a month to file an amended lawsuit fleshing out that claim. The lawsuit is one of about a dozen X is facing stemming from Musk's decision to lay off about half of Twitter's workforce beginning last November. Liss-Riordan also represents about 2,000 former Twitter employees who have filed similar legal claims against the company in arbitration.
