Microsoft shares initially rose 4.6% after the tech giant released its second-quarter earnings report after the market closed Tuesday, after its cloud computing division Azure posted better-than expected results. It expects between $50.5 billion to $51.5 billion in revenue in the third quarter, compared with expectations for over $52 billion, as growth in its Azure cloud-computing unit falters. Its outlook for revenues in its Azure division was also cut, after growth in the cloud-computing division slowed to 31%. "But overall revenue growth lower than expectations, companies and consumers are clearly belt tightening and Microsoft is cautious about the quarter ahead with sales momentum slowing."
The pan-European STOXX 600 index (.STOXX) dropped 0.1% despite a strong finish on Wall Street where battered technology stocks continued their rebound. European stocks hit a nine-month peak last week on hopes of a milder recession in Europe and smaller interest rate increases from the Federal Reserve. While those areas would be negatively affected by a recession, infrastructure spending approved earlier in the Biden administration could help create solid demand even if the U.S. consumer weakens. Similarly, iShares highlighted the U.S. Infrastructure ETF (IFRA) and the MSCI Global Agriculture ETF (VEGI) in its 2023 outlook as potential winners, in part due to their inflation-hedging properties . In iShares' 2023 outlook, the firm identified its MSCI USA Value Factor ETF (VLUE) and Core S & P Small-Cap ETF (IJR) as two funds that could benefit from a low-growth environment.

Investors who stuck to the traditional portfolio breakdown of 60% allocated to stocks and 40% allocated to bonds were hit hard this year as both asset classes shed value. Bonds also lost value for investors this year, going against the traditional correlation where they act as a hedge to stock market volatility. Still, most analysts don't expect the year to yield a worse performance than 2022 for the standard 60/40 portfolio. That bodes well for investors who still have a traditional portfolio balance. And even though the traditional 60/40 portfolio had a dismal 2022, investors shouldn't write it off.
