In March, the Democratic governor announced a plan to gift several California cities hundreds of tiny homes by the fall to create space to help clear homeless encampments that have sprung up across the state’s major cities. More than 171,000 homeless people live in California, making up about 30% of the nation’s homeless population. The state has spent roughly $30 billion in the last few years to help them, with mixed results. Officials also pointed to a new law signed by Newsom in July to streamline construction of tiny homes. “It’s going to help thousands of people who are going to benefit because of the comprehensive nature of the approach here.”Sacramento and the state have also agreed to place the other 175 tiny homes at the California state fairgrounds.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Jonathan Marchessault scored, Adin Hill made 23 saves and the Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights beat the Seattle Kraken 4-1 on Tuesday night after a banner-raising ceremony. Chandler Stephenson, Ivan Barbashev and Jack Eichel also scored for the Golden Knights. The Golden Knights improved to 6-1-0 in home openers, their only loss coming in 2018 to Philadelphia. The Golden Knights made it 2-0 when Seattle’s Brandon Tanev went to clear the puck past the goal, but Marchessault nicked it off course and past Grubauer. But just as he did in standing tall during the Golden Knights’ Stanley Cup run, Hill was outstanding in making six saves during the penalty kill.

Image-generating technology from firms like Midjourney and Stable Diffusion have threatened Adobe's customer base of creative professionals who use its tools like Photoshop. The new generation of tools announced on Tuesday will include a feature called "Generative Match". Like Adobe's earlier tool, it will allow users to generate an image from a few words of text. "Some amount of photography is going to move to virtual photography, where you're generating from whole cloth. Adobe on Tuesday also rolled out tools that generate vector graphics, which can easily be resized and are commonly used for logos and product labels, as well as tools for generating templates for brochures and other items.

For many, the event is being seen as a sort of warm-up for the 2024 total solar eclipse, which professor Mark Littmann calls “the gold standard” of eclipse viewing. It gives you a kind of an omen of what a total eclipse would look like.”Viewing an annular eclipse is far from routine: The next one won’t happen over the contiguous United States until 2046. Corpus Christi, TexasCorpus Christi residents and visitors will among the last to witness the annular eclipse on the US mainland. The American won the first of her five world all-around titles in 2013 at the age of 16 in Antwerp and has since become a household name after winning a record 25 worlds medals -- which includes a jaw-dropping 19 golds. At 26, she will become not only the oldest American woman to compete at the worlds in over half a century but also the first woman to represent the U.S. at six artistic world championships when it kicks off on Saturday. The U.S., Britain and Canada's women secured team quota spots last year while China, Japan and Britain secured men's quotas. While the U.S. men are yet to secure qualification, the women are overwhelming favourites for top spot but Biles will have competition for the individual all-round gold. The 2022 all-around champion Rebeca Andrade of Brazil, Olympic silver medallist in Tokyo, is a serious contender as is Biles's 21-year-old compatriot Shilese Jones, who took the silver at the worlds last year.

The capability, which Intel showed off during a software developer conference held in Silicon Valley, could let businesses and consumers test ChatGPT-style technologies without sending sensitive data off their own computer. It is made possible by new AI data-crunching features built into Intel's forthcoming "Meteor Lake" laptop chip and from new software tools the company is releasing. Intel said on Tuesday that it was building a new supercomputer that would be used by Stability AI, a startup that makes image-generating software. China's Alibaba Group Holdings (9988.HK) is using its newest central processors to serve up chatbot technology, Intel said. SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — A federal judge has halted implementation of a California law intended to restrict companies’ use of information gathered from young internet users in order to protect the privacy of minors. U.S. District Judge Beth Labson Freeman on Monday granted a preliminary injunction, saying the legislation interferes with firms' use of the internet in ways the state has failed to justify. It would also prohibit businesses from collecting most types of personal information about young internet users, including their physical locations. “The State has no right to enforce obligations that would essentially press private companies into service as government censors,” Freeman wrote. It was challenged by NetChoice, a commercial association whose members include Google, Amazon, Meta and TikTok.
