New York CNN —Starting in November, Google will require political advertisements to prominently disclose when they feature synthetic content — such as images generated by artificial intelligence — the tech giant announced this week. Political ads that feature synthetic content that “inauthentically represents real or realistic-looking people or events” must include a “clear and conspicuous” disclosure for viewers who might see the ad, Google said Wednesday in a blog post. The rule, an addition to the company’s political content policy that covers Google and YouTube, will apply to image, video and audio content. In its policy update, Google said it will require disclosures on ads using synthetic content in a way that could mislead users. The Federal Election Commission has also been exploring how to regulate AI in political ads.

CNN —Seven Republican presidential candidates have, as of Sunday, met the polling requirements to appear on the August debate stage following new polling from Fox Business in Iowa and South Carolina. Ron DeSantis, tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, former Vice President Mike Pence, former South Carolina Gov. Chris Christie have each reached 1% or higher in at least two qualifying national polls and two qualifying state polls from separate states, which is a requirement set by the Republican National Committee. I will see you at that debate stage.”Of the remaining GOP candidates who have not yet met the polling criteria, former Arkansas Gov. Doug Burgum needs two national polls, and former Texas Rep. Will Hurd and Miami Mayor Francis Suarez each need one state and two national polls to qualify.

Long-shot GOP presidential candidate Mayor Francis Suarez is campaigning off of international soccer superstar Lionel Messi's Major League Soccer debut. He's raffling off front-row tickets to the game to anyone who donates to his campaign. He's one of several GOP candidates utilizing creative tactics to increase their donor numbers. In order to make it to the GOP presidential debate stage, the Republican National Committee stipulates that a candidate must have received at least 40,000 unique donations with at least 200 unique donors coming from 20 or more states. Suarez's ticketing raffle isn't the first creative stunt that GOP presidential candidates have used this go-around to try and qualify for the GOP debate.

Experts worry that the proliferation of generative AI tools, like ChatGPT, could make it easier for bad actors to create election misinformation. OpenAI, the maker of the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, issued a stark warning about the risk of AI-generated misinformation in a recent research paper. To get to the GOP presidential debate stage, candidates must hit certain fundraising and polling requirements, as per the RNC. A key stipulation is that candidates must poll 1% or higher in 3 national polls with 800 or more registered Republican likely voters. Additionally, the RNC said the polls must each survey at least 800 registered likely Republican voters for it to count. As Insider's Walt Hickey previously wrote, surveys containing "800 registered likely Republican voters" are not easy to come by. It's also, coincidentally, the only survey tracked by FiveThirtyEight with more than 800 registered likely Republican voters that has Hutchinson and former New Jersey Gov.
