“There’s no white knight coming,” a federal law enforcement official told NBC News, speaking on the condition of anonymity to describe the posture of federal authorities in the coming weeks, after Election Day. Law enforcement officials across the country said they believe the 2024 election will have a more sustained drumbeat of partisan rhetoric and disinformation than the 2020 election. The FBI has also set up a National Election Command Post at headquarters specifically to focus on election threats, as is standard practice in an election year. Two law enforcement officials expressed some concern that a federal response to any serious election issues could be chaotic and involve a “hodgepodge” of different state, local and federal law enforcement agencies and local election entities. CNN —In the closely watched battleground state of Michigan, election officials are under the microscope, with isolated mistakes or missteps serving as fodder for election deniers to lay the groundwork for widespread doubt of election results. Some of the confusion appears to have originated from a post on X by Matthew DePerno, one of the more high-profile election deniers in Michigan. DePerno has pleaded not guilty in the voting machines case. When it does happen, we take it extremely seriously,” Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit said in a statement. But former prosecutors on the Trump case could face a difficult workplace, once Trump’s appointees are running the department. A state appeals court in New York on Thursday suspended Kenneth Chesebro, who struck a plea deal with prosecutors pursuing the 2020 election interference case against former President Donald Trump, from practicing law there. An attorney for Chesebro did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday evening. Some legal groups filed ethics complaints against Chesebro with the New York Supreme Court’s attorney grievance committee in 2022. Chesebro was admitted to practice law in New York in 2007. Jenna Ellis, another Trump attorney, was banned in May from practicing law in Colorado for three years.

A New York woman has been charged with assault as a hate crime after she allegedly pepper-sprayed her Muslim Uber driver as he praying at a red light, prosecutors said Thursday. Jennifer Guilbeault, 23, allegedly launched the “anti-Muslim” attack on July 31, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said in a news release Monday. A few minutes later the driver called 911 and Guilbeault was arrested at the scene. Guilbeault has been charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with second-degree assault as a hate crime, third-degree assault as a hate crime, and second-degree aggravated harassment. “As alleged, Jennifer Guilbeault senselessly assaulted a Muslim Uber driver while he was just doing his job,” District Attorney Alvin L. — A Washington state man who pleaded guilty to killing at least 118 eagles as part of a wildlife trafficking ring that operated on a Native American Reservation in Montana faces sentencing Thursday before a federal judge. The trafficking ring sold eagle feathers and parts on a black market that exploits high demand among tribal members who use them in powwows and other ceremonies. The defendant and others killed at least 107 hawks and as many as 3,600 birds overall, prosecutors said. It’s illegal to buy or sell eagle feathers or other parts. Branson made between $180,000 and $360,000 from 2009 to 2021 selling bald and golden eagle parts illegally, court records said.

A federal grand jury in New York is hearing new evidence this week as part of the investigation into Sean "Diddy" Combs. Attorney Ariel Mitchell-Kidd told NBC News on Wednesday that a male client of hers is testifying before a grand jury in the Southern District of New York on Thursday. Five people have been charged in Texas, accused of organizing and participating in an illegal cheating scheme that certified more than 200 unqualified teachers and saw the plot’s “kingpin” rake in more than $1 million, prosecutors announced. Investigators noticed a pattern: Numerous teacher certification candidates who previously failed certification exams would drive from faraway Texas cities to the Houston area to take an exam. Then a tip came in that exposed the cheating scheme. OTTAWA, Ontario — A Canadian official alleged Tuesday that Indian Home Minister Amit Shah ordered a campaign of violence, intimidation and intelligence-gathering targeting Sikh separatists inside Canada. Kendra Panteah, 37, pleaded guilty Friday to one count of kidnapping not resulting in death in federal court in Albuquerque, according to court records. Another man, Gilbert John Jr., fatally stabbed the victim, the prosecutor's office said. Panteah said the two other people got out as she drove to Gallup with the man still locked in the trunk, according to the plea agreement. They stopped at Bass Lake, which is where the victim began breaking out of the trunk and John stabbed him repeatedly with a machete, Panteah and prosecutors said. He and Panteah sat on the trunk of the car until the victim stopped moving, according to Panteah's plea agreement.

An Alabama man was sentenced Tuesday to one year and nine months in prison for threatening a sheriff and a district attorney in Georgia over the jail mug shot of former President Donald Trump, prosecutors said. Hanson also threatened District Attorney Fani Willis, saying that if Trump was indicted, "anytime you’re alone, be looking over your shoulder." Hanson made the threats in two voicemails left for Labat and Willis on Aug. 6, 2023, before Trump was indicted or his mug shot was taken. A Fulton County grand jury indicted Trump and 18 other people last year on state charges related to efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia, an election that Trump lost. Trump was indicted on Aug. 14, 2023, and 10 days later, he surrendered to the Fulton County Jail and his mug shot was released publicly.
