CNN —Keir Starmer’s historic victory in Britain’s general election Thursday hands him a level of power that was unthinkable for a Labour leader just five years ago. Convincing the public that the Labour Party could be trusted with public finances was a big part of his electoral campaign. Most notably, the hard-right Reform UK, led by friend of Donald Trump Nigel Farage, secured 14% of the national vote. It’s extremely likely that with Starmer now in power, Farage and his acolytes will turn their attention to tearing chunks out of the Labour Party. Fortunately for Starmer, he has quite a lot of political capital to spend.

Rather than sparking typical cheer on Wall Street, Elliott's campaign, spelled out in a 50-page presentation, led to confusion and concern among investors and customers. Several activism experts pointed to two of Elliott's past targets for insight into the hedge fund's strategy for Southwest: Suncor Energy in 2022 and Marathon Petroleum in 2019. Elliott partner John Pike, who is now leading the Southwest campaign, was involved in the firm's actions at both energy companies. Pike and portfolio manager Bobby Xu are leading Elliott's Southwest campaign. But in 2018, a few months after reaching an agreement with Elliott, Marathon announced it was only getting bigger.

Britain, the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, erstwhile coal-burning imperial behemoth, wants to be a “clean energy superpower.”At least that’s the promise of the man poised to be the next prime minister, Keir Starmer. His Labour Party was projected to win the parliamentary elections on Thursday, ending 14 years of Conservative Party rule. Labour made big campaign promises on climate. It’s where the Industrial Revolution began in the 18th century, giving rise to a global economy driven by coal, oil and gas and with it, the emissions of planet-heating greenhouse gases. So the speed and scale of Britain’s energy transition is likely to be closely watched by other industrialized countries and emerging economies alike.

Not only would a ticket with Kamala Harris as president and Michigan Gov. Both Harris and Whitmer have been passionate and effective champions of what could be the defining issue in 2024: reproductive rights. Finally, both Harris and Whitmer were once prosecutors, and their ticket would create a ready-made television spot: the law-and-order prosecutors versus the convicted felon. In addition, both Harris and Whitmer could use their laser-like prosecutorial skills to combat Trump’s endless exaggerations, false claims, and disinformation. Read previewUniversal basic income has made giant strides from its origins as a utopian vision toward becoming economic reality. Basic income trials have been conducted in countries as varied as Kenya, Finland, India, and Canada. Proponents of UBI say it reduces poverty, strengthens the social safety net, promotes health and happiness, and combats the stigma around welfare. Basic income recipients in a Finnish trial reported higher life satisfaction, improved health, and lower levels of depression and loneliness. An open questionUniversal basic income remains a largely theoretical idea that could have significant — and unpredictable — impacts on wealth inequality, human welfare, labor markets, and entire economies.

To better understand what makes Ferrari a luxury brand, CNBC traveled to Ferrari headquarters in Maranello, Italy, to interview the company's CEO, Benedetto Vigna. NYSEIn 2018, British regulators sanctioned the UK arm of online gambling giant Flutter after it failed to catch an astonishing anomaly. The United States is Flutter's largest and fastest-growing market in terms of revenue. Both online sports betting and online casinos have been legal and regulated far longer in Britain than in the United States. But in the United States, Flutter doesn't place such limits on the age group. Around a decade ago, British politicians became concerned about a rise in gambling-linked fraud and suicides involving online VIP customers.

CNN —In the first week of a new Trump administration, President Joe Biden’s climate wins would get put through the shredder. “He has said he’s going to come back with a vengeance,” former US special climate envoy John Kerry told CNN. He has railed against Biden’s climate policies at rallies and derided clean energy, vowing to push America back to fossil fuels. He has openly courted the oil industry at fundraising events, the Washington Post reported, promising regulation rollbacks in exchange for campaign cash. It could happen “very fast,” said David Bernhardt, who served as Interior Secretary in the Trump administration.

Am I gentle parenting, or am I just a pushover?
  + stars: | 2024-07-01 | by ( Ian Macallen | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +7 min
I hadn't heard the term gentle parenting until our son was more than a year old. Eventually the algorithm caught on, and finally saw my first gentle parenting meme. There are plenty of would-be comedians producing not-that-funny videos featuring the phrase, "gentle parenting." This gentle parenting thing turned out to be a pretty big deal, so much bigger than my sleep deprived brain could grapple with. I wasn't trying to gentle parent, I'm just a people pleaser.

Demand for solar jobs is growing in response to clean-energy goals and government incentives. Many entry-level solar jobs don't require higher education, and they offer on-the-job training. Solar jobs offer a low barrier to entry and high growth potentialHowever, the shortage means there are many affordable, accelerated solar training programs designed to help people get their foot in the door. Collardson added that people with backgrounds in areas such as marketing, engineering, and law could apply their skills to jobs at solar companies.
