Fourteen attorneys general, led by officials in New York and California, filed lawsuits Tuesday accusing the social media platform TikTok of damaging young users’ mental health and collecting their data without consent. “Young people are struggling with their mental health because of addictive social media platforms like TikTok,” New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement. In recent years, a growing number of health professionals have sounded the alarm about the effects of excessive social media use on mental and physical health, particularly among children and teenagers. Earlier this year, the Senate Judiciary Committee grilled the CEOs of TikTok, Meta and X during a hearing about online child safety and youth mental health. But the service’s rise has been shadowed by concerns about mental health, as well as national security.

The former star appellate lawyer who allies once cast as the smartest person in the room remains confounded by the realities of Donald Trump. Roberts was shaken by the adverse public reaction to his decision affording Trump substantial immunity from criminal prosecution. The Roberts Court has been in sync with the GOP political agenda largely because of decisions the chief justice has authored: For Trump and other Republicans. But the politically charged valence deepened in the justices’ resolution of the case against former President Trump on election-interference charges from 2020. Harvard Law School professor Richard Lazarus, a longtime friend of Roberts, spent time with him in July immediately after the Trump decision was issued.

Dr. Morgan Robach, a dermatologist, and Dr. Vivian Chin, a cosmetic physician, both administer Botox and filler treatments. Your injector doesn't have the right credentialsTreatments from unlicensed or unqualified injectors are always dangerous, whether you're getting Botox or "vampire facials," because they can neglect basic safety protocols. If you're getting filler, the office should be stocked with hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down filler, in case you get a filler occlusion. You don't like your injector's styleIf your injector's own Botox and filler looks too dramatic to you, it's worth being cautious, according to Rabach. REUTERS/Ken CedenoThe U.S. Department of Justice late Tuesday made recommendations for Google's search engine business practices, indicating that it was considering a possible breakup of the tech giant as an antitrust remedy. The DOJ also said it was "considering behavioral and structural remedies that would prevent Google from using products such as Chrome, Play, and Android to advantage Google search and Google search-related products and features — including emerging search access points and features, such as artificial intelligence — over rivals or new entrants." Kent Walker, Google's president of global affairs, said the company plans to appeal the ruling and highlighted the court's emphasis on the high quality of Google's search products, which the judge also noted in his ruling. In the second quarter, "Google Search & Other" accounted for $48.5 billion in revenue, or 57% of Alphabet's total revenue. The company holds 90% of search market share.

Fulton County, meanwhile, has sued the board, objecting to the push to force it to use election deniers as monitors. “The State Election Board has no statutory authority to force the Fulton County BRE [Board of Registration and Elections] to accept, and Fulton County to pay for, election monitors hand-picked by the State Election Board,” the lawsuit states. But GOP members of the state-election board told CNN neither Germany nor the Carter Center should be allowed to be a monitor because of bias. Fellow election board Republican Janelle King alleged that Fulton County is operating in bad faith. Two Democratic lawmakers are demanding that some of the biggest food and beverage companies stop engaging in “shrinkflation” — the practice of reducing product sizes while charging prices that are the same or higher. Spokespeople for General Mills, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo did not immediately respond to requests for comment. President Joe Biden has mentioned shrinkflation numerous times, declaring it a “rip-off” in a video he posted to X. Sarah Gallo, senior vice president of federal affairs at Consumer Brands Association, a trade group that Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and General Mills all belong to, defended industry practices to NBC News. Dean said the letters were sent to “ease the wrongful burden” the companies are imposing on consumers.

None of the studies noted improvements in mental health care or declines in suicide attempts or deaths after the warnings were implemented. While an increase in antidepressant use occurred before the FDA advisory, there were abrupt and sustained declines in use — ranging from 20% to 50% — after the warnings. Three studies reported increases in psychotropic drug poisonings, which suggest suicide attempts, and in suicide deaths among children. However, “the study convincingly suggests that the Black Box warning may have made at least some providers and families anxious about treating adolescents with antidepressants,” Fortuna said. Every young person differs in the level of risk, needs and circumstances, Fortuna said, and antidepressants can be lifesaving.

A U.S. judge issued a permanent injunction on Monday that will force Google to offer alternatives to its Google Play store for downloading apps on Android phones. Google will also be restricted from paying fees or sharing revenue with companies in exchange for them choosing not to compete with Google's app store. The Fortnite maker accused Google of anti-competitive practices, including paying hardware companies and Android phone makers to not develop competing app stores. Epic Games prevailed over Google late last year, and Monday's filing details the changes Google has to make. Epic Games mostly lost in a very similar suit against Apple and its control of the App Store.

New York CNN —CBS News executives said Monday that a heated morning show interview with acclaimed author Ta-Nehisi Coates, during which his new book was compared to “extremist” writings, did not meet the network’s editorial standards. CBS executives told staffers during a daily editorial meeting that the contentious “CBS Mornings” interview last week with Coates, led by co-anchor Tony Dokoupil, had been addressed with Dokoupil. The assessment pacified some employees who had objected to Dokoupil’s tone during the segment with Coates. During the September 30 interview, Dokoupil took issue with Coates’ framing in the book. The gripping interview — intense by the often cozy standards of morning television —has since been viewed many millions of times on streaming websites.

SYDNEY, Australia — A court in Australia upheld an order on Friday for Elon Musk’s X to pay a fine of 610,500 Australian dollars ($418,000) for failing to cooperate with a regulator’s request for information about anti-child-abuse practices. X did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday. This is not the first conflict between Musk and the Australian internet safety regulator. The eSafety Commissioner earlier this year ordered X to remove posts showing a bishop in Australia being stabbed during a sermon. X challenged the order in court on the grounds that a regulator in one country should not decide what internet users viewed around the world, and ultimately kept the posts up after the Australian regulator withdrew its case.

Researchers have now used DNA analysis to uncover just how long ants have been farming fungi, now described in a study published Thursday in the journal Science. To trace the evolution of this relationship between ants and fungi, Schultz and his colleagues built complex family trees. Using the DNA from 475 species of fungi, including 288 species known to be cultivated by ants, the researchers pieced together how all these organisms are related. The study team did the same thing for 276 species of ants, including 208 species of fungus farmers. Ants began farming fungi 66 million years ago after an asteroid hit Earth, according to a new study.

How will the most innovative companies be transformed by AI over the next 12 months? Last year, we had an AI challenge across the company, and a huge percentage of our employees participated. There are a lot of different points of view on what AI will and will not do and how quickly. And that the promise we think AI is going to deliver will probably take longer than we think to come to fruition.

The decision underscores the fractious relationship Starbucks has had with organized labor as more and more workers at its stores unionize. In 2022, when Schultz was interim CEO, he attended a company event in Long Beach, California, to address and improve working conditions at Starbucks stores. According to the administrative law decision, he “had an angry expression on his face.” The NLRB decision upholds an administrative law judge’s decision in October 2023.
