Qualcomm modems are inside all iPhone models currently being made, including the next model set to come out next week. Today, Qualcomm has more than 140,000 patents. Dado Ruvic | ReutersMicrosoft on Tuesday submitted a new deal for the takeover of Activision Blizzard, offering a spate of concessions after U.K. regulators rejected its initial proposal. Under the restructured deal, Microsoft will not acquire cloud rights for existing Activision PC and console games, or for new games released by Activision during the next 15 years, the CMA said. Regulators previously argued that Microsoft could also take key Activision games, like Call of Duty, and make them exclusive to Xbox and other Microsoft platforms. To cross that line, Microsoft offered concessions, such as offering royalty-free licenses to cloud gaming platforms to stream Activision games, if a consumer has purchased them. In the U.S., the Federal Trade Commission was fighting a legal battle with Microsoft in an effort to get the Activision takeover scrapped.

The world's largest PC maker has now suffered four consecutive quarters of sales declines. Revenue in the April-June quarter fell to $12.9 billion, below a $13.84 billion average of seven analyst estimates compiled by Refinitiv. Lenovo shares in Hong Kong fell as much as 6% after the result but recouped some losses to trade down 2.9%, while the benchmark index (.HSI) gained 0.9%. However, revenue started contracting last year as demand began to fall, weighed down by rising interest rates and soaring inflation. "The group’s PC business is stabilizing and well-positioned for a year-on-year recovery in the later part of 2023," Lenovo said in a statement.

The company said revenue was the second-highest for the month of July, thanks to "customers' increasing pull-in" for its smart consumer electronics products, including smartphones. That segment recorded double-digit growth from a year ago, it said, as major vendors such as Apple gear up for new product launches later this year. Other businesses, including computing products such as PCs and cloud and networking products, declined from a year ago, the company said, without elaborating. The first half of the year is traditionally slower for Taiwan tech manufacturers as major electronics vendors including Apple launch new products near the year-end holiday season. Second-quarter revenue dropped 13.8% year-on-year, in line with the company's expectations, Foxconn said in July.

AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su speaks at the AMD Keynote address during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) on January 4, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Chip stocks dipped Wednesday, after AMD 's disappointing revenue forecast raised concern that fragility in the PC market and slower spending from businesses may be poised to continue. Marvell fell almost 6%, Nvidia slid close to 5% and Intel and Texas Instruments each declined more than 3%, falling more than the broader tech market. At the same time, the company said a "weaker PC market" dragged second-quarter revenue down 54% in its client segment. "Demand is recovering very gradually," Woohyun Kim, chief financial officer at SK Hynix, said on an earnings call this week. "The recent improvement in PC shipments has been mainly led by promotions and low-end models, meaning it provided limited impact on chip demand recovery," he said, adding that shipment forecasts for PCs and smartphones this year have been downgraded from earlier predictions. Meta and Qualcomm team up to run big A.I. models on phones

But the AI boom has largely missed the companies that make leading edge processors for phones and PCs, like Qualcomm. The announcement on Tuesday suggests that Qualcomm wants to position its processors as well-suited for A.I. If large language models can run on phones instead of in large data centers, it could push down the significant cost of running A.I. Qualcomm will make Meta's open-source Llama 2 models available on Qualcomm devices, which it believes will enable applications like intelligent virtual assistants. Doing this will allow researchers and eventually commercial enterprises to use the AI models on their own computers without asking permission or paying.
